OSS: Cubs bury the Cardinals under a barrage of home runs.
Three Four up:
- The Cubs came out swinging against Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright, scoring two runs on three doubles in the first inning. Wainwright was chased following a five run second inning capped off by a three run shot by Willson Contreras.
- The Cubs had five homers on the day, including the one by Contreras, a solo shot by Jorge Soler, a two run bomb by Javy Baez, and two homers by today’s leadoff hitter Matt Salad of all people. Jerome Williams, who made 17 starts with the 2005 Cubs and is somehow still in baseball despite putting up 1 WAR total in the intervening decade, was responsible for four home runs.
- Oddly enough the Cubs leading WPA-er did not homer in this game. Kris Bryant doubled in his first two PAs which led to two of the first three Cubs runs, leading to a .177 WPA on the day.
- No one got drilled in this game
Three down
- Javy was the only Cubs position player with a negative WPA, mostly because he only had one PA before things got out of hand.
- Jake Arrieta threw a lot of pitches and left in the middle of the sixth with over 100 pitches. The Cubs should have just lifted him after five with their gigantic lead.
- Seriously, Jerome Williams is still in baseball.
Next up: The Cubs send the de facto NL ERA leader up against a guy making his MLB debut at 1:20 PM CT

Matt Salad is my fav!

Yeah, it’s difficult to believe he’s even worthy of wearing a AAA uniform at this point. I didn’t know he was still pitching. Or if I did, I had conveniently forgotten about it. More of him this series, please.
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
He’s a guy who wasn’t able to cut it with the 2006 Cubs

Szczur did get plunked, but I guess he wasn’t drilled. He immediately came in to score.
ceruleanQuote Reply
To be fair, that team was stacked, much like the boxes of forgotten things hidden in an attic. Why are you going and reminding us what’s in those dusty-we-distrusty ole boxes?!
ceruleanQuote Reply
cerulean,
I watched most of that season. I think the Cubs still had old Maddux – I still loved watching him pitch. Also, Neifi saved us man.
SKQuote Reply
SK,
Pretty sure he was traded to the Dodgers at the deadline, but yeah, he had a good season that year IIRC.
dmick89Quote Reply
SK,
Don’t forget E6. And Juan F. Pierre. That season was a trainwreck.
ceruleanQuote Reply
cerulean,
Good ol’ Ronny Cedeno. (dying laughing)
SKQuote Reply
Is that the year they acquired Cesar Izturis? Maddux deal?
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
Yeah, it was Maddux for Izturis IIRC.

Hendricks is kicking some ass.
SKQuote Reply
Hendricks on pace for 27 strikeouts.

I don’t love anything as much as Maddon loves squeeze plays.

Kyle is just making it look so easy.

KB has looked like shit today.
dmick89Quote Reply
I should not have mentioned E6’s name today. Fowler just pulled one.

Terrible base running today.

Bad Edwards
dmick89Quote Reply
Get well soon, Strop and Rondon.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
You’ve got to get Edwards out of there.

Jesus.

Too late, Joe. Thanks anyway.
dmick89Quote Reply
Welp.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Hard to imagine Joe Smith makes the playoff roster. Hard to imagine he stays on the roster through the end of the season.
PerkinsQuote Reply
remember those 4 or 5 days the Cubs had a good bullpen?
dmick89Quote Reply
Joe Smith continues to impress.
ceruleanQuote Reply
cerulean,
Smith sucks.
dmick89Quote Reply
Smith is a righthanded Clayton Richard.
ceruleanQuote Reply
This is the kind of team that can score seven in a frame, so there is still a chance.
ceruleanQuote Reply
That’s a start.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Now the offense comes alive.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Three straight singles and a throwing error. How about three more followed by a homerun?
ceruleanQuote Reply
Crowd cheers when Baez drives in a run with a groundout. Odd.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Tie game (if Smith did his fucking job).
ceruleanQuote Reply
I hope Maddon finds this game instructive—a shorter lease for Edwards if he is wild and zero leash Smith. DFA that funk.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Fuck this team. We stinks. This one loss ruins everything. Prove me wrong.
Smokestack LightningQuote Reply
James Shields is continuing to make me mad that the Cubs couldn’t do anything against him.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Shields had zero strikeouts today. He struck out Bryant three times.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
But the Cubs could beat Sale. Oh well.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Looks like I’m going to see the Cubs ace at Coors on Friday
berseliusQuote Reply
Giancarlo Stanton’s season is over.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
berselius,
Joe Smith?
dmick89Quote Reply
Rizzo the Rat,
Looks like the Marlins are interested in ARod.
dmick89Quote Reply
Clayton Richard made it through 5 innings in his start for the Padres. Ugly peripherals, though.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
dmick89,
I really hope he gets to 700.
