Cubs 15, Beers 2

OSS: Jake Marisnick leads the offense in a blowout

Three up:

  1. The whole offense was straight fire today, but Jake Marisnick was the big standout with a 5 RBI day. He got things going with a bases-clearing double in the first, knocked in the elusive runner on third in the second inning, and added a solo shot for good measure in the fourth inning. Not too shabby, especially when you consider that most of this was off of right handed pitching, and he was mostly kept around to face lefties.
  2. Every other member of the starting lineup got at least one hit (sorry Cyle, you don’t count here). I’m kind of shocked to see in the box score that the Cubs hit only four dingers – they were certainly crushing the baseball all day. Contreras, Rizzo, and Baez joined Marisnick in the homer party, while KB remains scorching hot at the plate.
  3. After a disaster of an outing on Sunday, Cyle righted the ship with a solid, Cyle-like six innings today.

Three down:

  1. I’m not gonna complain about a double digit win, (dying laughing).

Next up:

The Cubs will take another crack at solving Three True Outcome Machine Freddy Peralta tomorrow. He faces Adbery Alzolay at 1:20 PM CT. We’ll see if I’m awake enough when my second covid shot kicks in tomorrow morning (dying laughing).

Also, ICYMI, Pat Hughes is doing the tv play-by-play on Sunday’s game, which should be a treat!

Goddamn, deGrom’s pitching line tonight. Good thing they pushed back his start, he would have thrown a 27k game (dying laughing)

    To-day’s base ball squadron

    CF Happ

    1B Rizzo
    LF Bryant
    3B Duffy
    RF Heyward
    2B Sogard
    SS Hoerner
    P Alzolay

Not surprising to see Javy get a day off vs Peralta – he would find a way to strike out five times in four plate appearances if he got the start.

Oh, Ian. You’d think by the 10th pitch of the at-bat you’d abandon the hope of just watching and hoping you get the call.

Pat Hughes and Jim Deshaies is a nice combo. From what I’ve heard of the new guy, he’s all right too, but I could get used to this.

however, Pat, I would assert that the sporting goods bit was the main hustle and the baseball playing was just a means to world domination

Kris Bryant’s right biceps is “starting to bark a little bit,” Cubs manager David Ross said. “I’m going to try to rest him. He’s available off the bench to hit. But I’m going to try to stay away from him and see if we can calm that bicep down and see how he presents tomorrow.”

Let’s face it, we all knew Hendricks couldn’t keep fooling hitters with 86 mph fastballs forever.

I thought the point of TV screens getting larger was so that we could get a better view of the game, not so that TV networks could clutter the screen with interviews and commercials.

    berselius,

Relieved af. Lance made so much more sense than Jones, but all the smoke was concerning.

Love Lance, but CHI fans should be really excited. Fields is a 1.1 talent and his “fall” has shades of Watson-like overthinking.

And GB just refuses to help Rodgers, huh? There were two WRs and one OL I liked in the first when they picked. And they didn’t even pick the right Georgia CB.

    Ryno,

To be fair though, given most glaring hole in the Packers roster in the NFC championship game, I always figured they were going to go for a CB.

    berselius,
My son, who’s thirteen and suddenly a football news freak and a 6’ linebacker, was running all these trade rumors and crazy scenarios (most of them involving the Bears getting Justin Fields and the Packers trading Aaron Rodgers) past me for the past three months. Finally I told him, “Look, the Bears aren’t getting Fields and the Packers aren’t trading Aaron Rodgers. That’s not how life works.”

Now he thinks you get what you want in life and I don’t know how to prove to him, other than by example, that it just ain’t true.

    berselius,

I guess it’s odd given their choices last year. Especially in the first round. Plus, I don’t think Stokes was the best CB in any sense.

Besides, defensive coordinator was their biggest need and I think they handled that.

The homer in me is still disappointed that Jim Leonhard turned them down.

I was a full-grown adult with two kids when I first saw Joey Votto against the Cubs. Watching him regress toward retirement will make me feel truly ancient.

It would appear whatever wormhole 2016 Kris Bryant disappeared into, this is where it dropped him.

Too bad it brought the 2012 Cubs along as well.

I think stealing home was a good idea (there were two outs and he wasn’t being held), but poorly executed. He didn’t get a lead aggressive enough.

Bryant was better than I remembered in 2019, but this looks like it could be his best season since 2017.

Sounds about right for him to get great again just before departing in free agency.

    Perkins,

It will be hard to accept if they neither trade him or sign him. If he were to get hurt at any point this season, it would be a really sad outcome all around, but especially for him.

This Cubs team feels like one of those middling 2005 or 2009 ones that has a great chance of sweeping a team like the Dodgers after dropping a bunch of games to other shitty NL Central teams because nothing has to make sense and they’re going to win around eighty games.

Chili Davis is a FA again. Maybe the Cubs can hire him then fire him again to get the offense moving.

    LHP Kyle Ryan recalled

    RHP Keegan Thompson recalled

    INF Ildemaro Vargas selected

    Crazy:

This is just the 2nd time over the last 2 seasons that the Dodgers have trailed by 6 runs at any point in a game. Every other team has trailed by 6 runs in at least 7 games over that span.
