OSS: The Jason Heyward Game?
Three up:
- Heyward drove in all three runs in this game, including the RBI single that sent the game to extras in the ninth and the game-winner in the thirteenth. His slash line since the weekend off in Coors now stands at .308/.320/.442, and hopefully he just keeps on hitting.
- Addison Russell had a great game as well, and set the table for Heyward with two doubles, a single, and an intentional walk in the thirteenth just before the walk off. He also got hosed by a horrendous strike zone during a scoring opportunity in the tenth.
- John Lackey had a solid return from the DL, but the bullpen shut out the Giants for eight more innings. Sahadev Sharma tweeted out the pen’s numbers in this series: 15 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 16K. Not too shabby. I can’t remember when in extras he tweeted this so it might even be better, but that might require actually looking things up smh.
Three down
- After three days of rest Aroldis Chapman had a multi-inning outing, and it was not pretty. He did strike out the side in his second inning, but sandwiched it around a walk, a single, and a passed ball. I think Joe might just give up on this with Chapman, even if it’s the right strategy for general ace relievers.
- That strike three call on Addison Russell, again. Oy.
Call hurts #Cubs
Strike 3 should be ball 4

- The Cubs must have beat out somewhere around 50 double plays today. Good hustle, but less of that in general might be good.
Next up: The Cubs homestand continues with a trip to Miller Park. Cyle Hendricks takes on Zach Davies at 12:10 PM CT

I’m fine with Chapman getting that second inning, especially since he only threw 7 pitches in his first one. Everyone allows baserunners occasionally, and it’s not as if he took anything off his fastball.

Also, this is the fourth time this year Chapman has gone more than 1 inning, and he hasn’t allowed any runs in any of these outings.

Rizzo the Rat,
I agree. He looked fine to me overall and the cubs got 6 outs from their best reliever. I’ll take it.
