OSS: KB stays hot, Cubs win another close one against the Beers.
Three up:
- Kris Bryant hit yet another home run, his fifth in the last eight games. His wRC+ is all the way up to 149. The heart of the Cubs lineup now has wRC+ of 149, 142, 157, and 171. That’ll do, pig.
- Jon Lester had another great start, pitching 6.2 innings and allowing just 1 run. His ERA dropped to 1.16, which leads the majors among starting pitchers…depending on where you draw the qualified number of innings bar.
- Javy had another big day, reaching base in all four of his PAs. He singled, reached on an error, hit a go-ahead RBI double, and most improbably, drew a walk. He also took an extra base on two different wild pitches. He leads the team with 1.9 WAR as of Sunday morning, and that number should go up again when FG updates its totals overnight.
- Over the course of the series, the Cubs held Yelich to just two hits and one ROE in 15 PAs.
Three down:
- Rizzo was scratched from this one due to back spasms. He usually has issues with this around this time of year, but still always a bummer to see it pop up. The word is that he should be good to go after the off day on Monday.
- Cishek got the save today, but we haven’t seen that much from him this year to inspire that much confidence. Or maybe I just didn’t tune in on days where he was good (like presumably today).
- Schwarber took an awkward angle on a Yelich fly ball that he missed while diving, leading to a three base error. Schwarber came back to make a great sliding catch later in the ballgame.
Next up: The Cubs have an off-day, then head to Cincy for a three game set. They’re all night games at 5:40 PM CT.

EnricoPallazzo,
It’s not just sadness. It’s the dejection, frustration, humiliation, and resignation also captured in his expression that make it freshly schadenfreude-y every damn time.

Random note: Frangraphs’ new framing metric has Geovany Soto saving 10+ runs each year from 2010-2012 and his fWAR has been given a sizeable retroactive boost.

I’m going to take a wild guess and say that hitting in front of Mike Trout most days is better for him than hitting in front of the pitcher. Or Jason Heyward.
Smokestack LightningQuote Reply
La Stella’s OBP also doesn’t give him credit for his ability to induce catcher’s interference.

Smokestack Lightning,
100 percent chance that this song is playing in his head in that pic
And the years rolled slowly past
And I found myself alone
Surrounded by strangers I thought were my friends
Found myself further and further from my home and I guess I lost my way
There were oh so many roads
I was livin to run and runnin to live
Never worried about payin or even how much I owe
Against the wind
I’m still runnin against the wind
I’m older now but still runnin against the wind
Well I’m older now but still runnin against the wind
Against the wind
Against the wind
Still runnin
Against the wind
Against the wind

It’s on a playlist with this:
When I was young
I never needed anyone
And making love was just for fun
Those days are gone
Living alone
I think of all the friends I’ve known
But when I dial the telephone
Nobody’s home
All by myself
Don’t want to be all by myself anymore
All by myself
Don’t want to live all by myself anymore
Hard to be sure
Sometimes I feel so insecure
And love so distant and obscure
Remains the cure
All by myself
Don’t want to be all by myself anymore
All by myself
Don’t want to live all by myself anymore
When I was young
I never needed anyone
And making love was just for fun
Those days are gone
All by myself
Don’t want to be all by myself anymore
All by myself
Don’t want to live all by myself anymore
All by myself
Don’t want to be all by myself anymore
All by myself
Don’t want to live all by myself anymore
All by myself

PerkinsQuote Reply
Perkins,
Why are the Cubs even letting him do interviews?
dmick89Quote Reply
Perkins,
I’m not sure what people expect from Russell. Like, if someone gets booed by his team’s fans and then gets asked how he feels about it, is anyone really expecting “well, I deserve it” to come out of that person’s mouth? Reading the whole article, which is a pretty decent read and a fair treatment, I don’t think he’s particularly bent out of shape or super well coached in how to handle interviews like this. I don’t care. He doesn’t have to feel like he deserves to be booed. He doesn’t have to be sympathetic to people who hate him. His main responsibility is treating the people in his life like human beings. I really don’t care if he’s not beating himself up or worrying about people who dislike him. I certainly don’t expect him to.
andcountingQuote Reply
dmick89,
I could be wrong, but I don’t think they’re allowed to completely make players unavailable for interviews altogether. I’m sure they can instruct him however they want, but I don’t think they can completely prevent it.
andcountingQuote Reply
andcounting,
I get all of that. I just mean it comes off as pretty tone deaf, and something could more effectively be addressed with some prepared statement to the effect that he understands how they feel and that he’s serious about his improving as a person and doing what he can do to help the Cubs.
I get the sense that he either hasn’t been coached well on giving interviews, or that he hasn’t really picked up that skill. And while the Cubs probably can’t make him totally unavailable for interviews, it would probably be in all parties’ interest if he simply gave a prepared line every time he is interviewed.
PerkinsQuote Reply
Perkins,
I agree. I think him giving interviews is kinda like picking a scab. It may bleed, ooze, itch, or peel, but no result is going to be good. If he’s sincere, it will be tone deaf because he’s probably several years of concerted therapy away from not being tone deaf about the issue. If he gives his canned responses he’ll be called phony. If he doesn’t answer he’ll be called a coward.
This will be fun to watch. (dying laughing)

A lot of what you said is right. How he treats the people in his life is most important.
My issue: If he doesn’t understand why people boo him or is unsympathetic to it, he’s a dangerous human (idiot, sociopath, etc.).
RynoQuote Reply
Ryno,
Yes, that makes sense. I do think that quote on its own amplifies the image of his lack of understanding. My impression is he does seem to get why people are angry toward him while also questioning how booing really accomplishes anything. From a PR standpoint it’s a dumb thing to say, but from a personal health perspective, it’s really good to say, “Hey, it’s people’s choice to think/react how they want. I’m not going to think too much about it.”
