Cubs 4, Cardinals 0

OSS: Cyle tosses a Maddux.

Three up:

  1. Kyle Hendricks was efficient af, needing just 81 pitches for a complete game shutout. Hendricks struck out three and walked none, allowing just four hits. His ERA dropped nearly a run and a half down to 3.93 on the season.
  2. Anthony Rizzo had the big hit of the day, a three run homer that put the Cubs ahead in the third inning. Rizzo’s slash line is now up to .252/.386/.551, good for a wOBA of .393 and wRC+ of 146. I’m not sure why he’s felt so invisible this year.
  3. Honestly Cyle should get two spots on this list, he was so dominant in this game.

Three down:

  1. Not much to complain about in a shutout. Javy struck out in his first three PAs, but knocked an RBI single for some late game insurance. He followed that up with a TOOTBLAN, and wasn’t able to tie things up long enough to allow Rizzo to score from third.
  2. Heyward was the WPA trailer in this one, thanks to a bases loaded popout in the sixth and a FC in the second. At least that wasn’t a double play.
  3. The Brewers won, so that was lame.

Next up: Yu Darvish takes on Michael Wacha at 3:05 PM CT. Both guys have struggled this year and are looking to (continue to?) right the ship.

We are hosting an exchange student from Spain this year. Today we are introducing her the to wonders of the neighborhood garage sale. She’s amazed at what people buy. I am too, but I’m glad not to have to pack it back up.

They said on the broadcast that the last Maddux thrown by a Cubs pitcher was in 2009 by Carlos Zambrano. I was surprised it was that rare.

    SK,

It’s more common than that. I remember some article a few years ago that said there had been about 300 of them going back to 1988 which is when the Maddux starts. I imagine they are becoming less and less frequent though as batters strikeout more, walk more and pitchers face the fourth time of the order less often than they used to. I’d still guess it happens at least twice as often as a no hitter these days though.

Intentionally walking a batter to bring up the tying run is dumb even when the next hitter is Taylor Davis.

In case Yu reads OV to work on his English, I want to clarify that when I said yesterday I liked that the Cubs were walking this year, I meant the Hitters.

I wasn’t paying attention, but it’s great to see Cubs’ highly-touted prospect Tyler Davies hit the grand slam.
