OSS: Cubs win it late with more help from the sloppy Brewers defense.
Three up:
-
The Cubs ninth inning unfolded as follows
La Stella popped out to SS
Caratini ROE, advanced to second
Heyward walk
Beez ROE
Zobrist RBI infield single to tie the game
Happ single to CF to score two more
Bryant IBB
Lester safety squeeze for another run
Contreras walk
La Stella popped out to PThe Cubs scored four runs while only hitting one ball that (should have) gotten out of the infield. I'll take it.
- Kris Bryant had a monster game, going 3-3 with a single, triple, HR, and two walks.
- Yu Darvish bounced back in a big way from his Cubs debut, striking out nine while allowing just two hits and a walk in six innings.
Three down:
- The offense finally broke through in the most unorthodox way possible, but it felt like they left a billion guys on base in this game. Maybe noted Situational Hitting Expert coach Chili Davis can remind the hitters that sacrifice flies are a thing.
- Ian Happ came through with the big hit in the ninth that put the Cubs ahead, but it was another three strikeout day for him. I didn't necessarily expect the whole Happ as leadoff hitter thing to go swimmingly, but this is completely bizarre.
- The Cubs only managed to strike out Ryan Braun three times across his four plate appearances. I guess there's room for progress.
Next up: The Cubs go for the series win at 1:10 PM CT, and can finally head back to Wrigley. Jose Quintana will take on nominal Brewers ace Chase Anderson.

Yelich is out tomorrow as well.

I thought Caratini singled and reached 2nd on the error. The Zobrist hit should have been an out if Thames didn’t look for a play at 2nd or if the pitcher was actually on the bag when he took the throw. Weird inning.

Correct. Also, the error should have been 50% on Thames, who did a terrible job receiving that one-hop throw.

Cutch with a walk-off homerun (the twelfth pitch of the at bat!?!) in the fourteenth inning. Dodgers now 2–6.

Ah you’re probably right. I was just going off the relatively unclear PBP on fangraphs and my vague memories.

Weird game. Maybe it’s just what the team needed.

JD thought Shaw was going to be able to turn two on that Baez bouncer, but I think that would have been really difficult. Shaw wasn’t going to be in a great position to get off a strong and quick throw and Baez runs pretty well.

You do realize that’s exactly what Ron Coomer would say* in the postgame wrap?

They finally threw Yelich on the DL. Wonder when they’ll think of doing so for Rizzo if he needs it.
