OSS: Cubs sweep the Cards back to a losing record

Three up:

  1. Kyle Hendricks was solid again today, allowing just one run in seven innings. As Coom pointed out on the broadcast, the pen is likely to get some work in next week’s series in Coors so it’s good to see him going deep in the game.
  2. The other Kyle continues to do well from the leadoff spot, stroking two hits, both driving in runs, and drawing a walk in four PAs.
  3. David Bote’s tie breaking RBI single in the fifth was the biggest play of the game by WPA.

Three down:

  1. Can’t complain about a sweep of the Cardinals!
  2. But the stupid Pirates managed to get swept by the Brewers.

Next up: The Cubs head to Coors for a three game set. The first game is a rematch of Yu Darvish and German Marquez, at 7:40 CT on Monday.

Last night’s game sucked, but I always expect the Cubs to lose in Colorado. It’s a freaky-ass place to play ball.

I also expect them to lose in Illinois, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, California, Arizona, Wisconsin and Texas. I feel pretty good when they play elsewhere.

For a guy who basically learned to play the outfield on the job at the major league level, Schwarber is a really good outfielder. He threw to second on the run off his back leg from foul territory in the outfield. That’s not easy.

Isn’t it ime to DFA Brach?

Probably, but at the latest he’ll be gone or sent to the IL with a phantom injury when Kimbrel is ready.

I’m kind of baffled that so many Cubs fans think that Murphy’s brief tenure as a Cubs was a disaster. That was a disappointing period for the Cubs, but Murphy hit well.

    Rizzo the Rat,

Didn’t he start out with a bang and then fall into the malaise with the rest of the offense?

Anyway, I think the general dislike is because of his anti-gay comments. Billy Bean (not the GM) says Murphy has matured though.

    BVS,

I’m still pretty surprised by the lasting response to those comments by Murphy. We’re pretty plugged in to the LGBT+ community over here and it’s always seemed like the way things have gone since then is exactly the way it should have – you’re not going to browbeat him into changing his mind, just make sure that he has actual exposure to gay people and educate him on the effects of his comments. As far as I know he hasn’t said anything publicly since that incident nearly five years ago, which was also certainly far milder than a lot of shit out there.

    berselius,

i’m not sure that anyone still cares about the anti-gay stuff w/r/t murphy. it’s just that it makes for an easy excuse to hate a dude who has a career OPS+ of 135 against the cubs. (i actually would have guess that it was higher.) i’d rather make fun of someone for being a dumbass homophobe rather than tipping my hat to a guy that routinely makes my team’s pitchers look incompetent.

He had ups and downs, but he actually finished the season strong, with excellent numbers in the second half of September.

Perkins: sent to the IL with a phantom injury

per his contract, i think he unfortunately loses a pretty significant percentage of his salary if he goes to the IL (which i don’t give a shit about but maybe that’s why he hasn’t been IL’d yet)

    berselius,

I’m glad KB has the day off. It seems like he must be hurt. Not that a nagging injury would ever derail an entire season for him, but I would like to see them play it safe all the same.

Coomer has improved considerably as a broadcaster. I find the radio much more enjoyable than it was a few years ago.

“I don’t really have to explain what’s going on here,” Arenado said. “You guys all saw the games in Chicago. You saw them here. It’s just baseball. I just thought [the pitch] was a little high. … I don’t like to talk about what goes on on the field. It’s just on the field.”

What? You wanna talk about cast irons, come here. You wanna play MLB, you’re gonna have to talk about what goes on on the field.
