Cubs 7, Brewers 2

OSS: Cubs sweep away Beers.

Three up:

  1. Jason Heyward had a big day, homering on the first pitch and hitting a RBI triple in his next PA. He also homered in Friday’s game, and his season line now sits at .276/.353/.472.
  2. Yu Darvish had another great outing, striking out eight beers against no walks and one Yelich solo shot in five innings. Darvish was pitching through an illness, maybe the same thing that sidelined Lester last week, but you can’t really tell from his line. Since the ASB, he has struck out 38 batters and walked just two, which is certainly a far cry from what the Cubs were getting earlier in the year. Now that his swagger is back he looks like the guy the Cubs paid him to be.
  3. Anthony Rizzo went 4-5, and continues to produce despite his strange relative homer outage that goes back to June.

Three down:

Hard to complain about sweeping the beers. Would be nice to see more of this offense on the road, however.

I was on vacation so I didn’t get a chance to post my favorite Brewers-related pic:

Next up: The A’s (64-48) come to Wrigley for a three game set. They’re a solid team, so hopefully the Cubs home cooking keeps its magic going.

    EnricoPallazzo,

Seriously. Their approach on radio spots seems to be a) find a voice who sounds like someone you know in real life; b) by “real life,” we mean an actor who seems like someone you could know in real life like Dennis Franz, Gene Hackman, or Sam Elliott.

If you listen closely to only the voice and not the 700 other points of manipulation, you’ll hear the difference. There’s actually a law requiring a “Celebrity voice impersonated” disclaimer if it’s reasonable to think the intent is, well, to sound exactly like a celebrity. But that guy is off just enough to clear that threshold, I guess.

    andcounting,

I’m sure next year they’re going to take things to the next level and find a way to wrap themselves in the flag through empty platitudes about The Troops.

Sounds like it’s 4 weeks for Contreras, though obviously he’ll need some time to knock the rust off after.

I don’t know why you guys are casting aspersions on CB Buckner, widely regarded as one of the best umpires in the game.

I know that around when the ownership changed there was a change to the number of night games, but I didn’t realize there would be this many. Seems like the Cubs are on the typical night-game schedule now.

    WaLi,

They still play more day games than other teams, but not that many at this point so yeah, they basically have the same schedule as anyone else in terms of day/night games.

    dmick89,

IIRC they are only restricted from playing night games on Friday and Saturday, though they negotiated some sort of deal with the city to have a few flexible start times. They could probably get more if they grease some body part of the local alderman.

I’d be pretty surprised if Javy stays in the game after that at bat. He looks hurt. So, the backup shortstop is who again?

    Rizzo the Rat,

They have six games left against the Cardinals, three against the Brewers, six against the Reds, and nine against the Cubs. If we can’t get them to be sometimes not worthless, I’ll settle for consistently worthless.

For some reason I thought the Cubs were at home against the Reds and figured they had a good chance of taking 3 of 4. Now I just assume they’ll get swept. Maybe they’ll manage to pull one out.

    dmick89,

The Cubs have their home jerseys hanging in their lockers in Cincy, hoping the players forget they’re on the road too. (dying laughing)

Didn’t Javy used to be a switch hitter? Seems like the kind of thing that would generate a lot of butthurt from the Reds announcers.
