OSS: Jon Lester helps himself.
Three up:
- Jon Lester’s pitching line was just okay (6 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 3 SO), but he managed to get a two run single off of Syndergaard, picked off a Mets baserunner, and snagged a liner hit right up the middle to finish up his day.
- Anthony Rizzo continued his torrid hitting streak, hitting two doubles and a homer in this one.
- Jesse Chavez managed to shut the door, after most of the rest of the bullpen managed to prop it open.
Three down:
- The Cubs pen nearly blew it in the ninth. Hopefully Morrow is back to full strength soon.
- Javy TOOTBLAN’ed in the middle of a Cubs rally in the first inning.
- Bob Odenkirk is a great actor, not so much a great singer.
Next up: Cole Hamels takes on likely CYA winner Jacob deGrom at 7:05 PM CT.

If the Cubs play .500 ball the rest of the season, the Cardinals need to go 21-10 to win the division. 21-9 for the Brewers.
PerkinsQuote Reply
RynoQuote Reply
Another fun fact: the Cubs do not yet have a 32 game stretch in which they have played only .500 ball. Even with all the inconsistency, they haven’t won fewer than 17 games in a 32 game stretch. And the Brewers only have a single 30 game stretch in which they won more than 20 games.
So I’m cautiously optimistic.
PerkinsQuote Reply
Given my impressive track record of being wrong yesterday, I predict that Cubs hitters will have no chance against Jacob deGrom and that Cole Hamels is due for a bad performance.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
pretty sure we’ve already established that dmick is the optimist ’round these parts
EnricoPallazzoQuote Reply
Today’s lineup has three consecutive lefties at the top, Victor Caratini batting fifth and Almora hitting against a righty.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Rizzo the Rat,
I love that Joe has really blown up the whole leadoff hitter thing this year and is just putting good hitters up there, but this dadaist shit with the rest of the lineup cancels it out somewhat.
berseliusQuote Reply
berselius,
If he’s going to fuck with the lineup, why not do it against a guy who might easily shut them out anyway? (dying laughing)
andcountingQuote Reply
andcounting,
Yeah, I don’t actually have a problem with today’s lineup. With so few off days these guys could use some rest and you may as well do it against someone like deGrom.
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
I get resting Contreras. There are no off-days for a while, it’s a day game before a night game and deGrom is right-handed. I don’t get batting Caratini this high, though. And I’d much rather have Happ than Almora against a righty (but put Happ in right and slide Heyward to center).

(I obviously meant a night game before a day game, not vice versa.)

This inning isn’t entirely his fault, but I found it a little annoying that Kintzler was the Cubs’ mid-season reliever acquisition this year.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
BVS,
Ball four was actually a perfectly-located strike, but called a ball because Caratini tried to throw out the runner instead of framing it.

They should just declare the Cubs the winner retroactively because the Mets’ run came as the result of umpire error. The Cubs are the only team with anything to play for at this point, anyway. What’s another loss to the Mets?
