Cubs 7, Padres 1

OSS: Nothing like a low stress win.

Three up:

  1. Matt Boyd’s second start for the Cubs was even more solid than his first. Boyd pitched six shutout innings walking one and striking out five. Small sample size etc etc but the Cubs signing of Boyd might have been shrewder than expected.
  2. The most impactful play of the game was Carson Kelly’s RBI single in the second to break the scoreless tie. He later went on to hit a three run bomb in the sixth to put the game out of reach after the Cubs were seemingly letting the Padres linger. It will sure be nice to not see the Cubs catching corps in 30th place on the positional WAR leaderboard this year.
  3. Ian Happ made an incredible diving catch in the seventh. Having three gold glove caliber outfielders sure is a nice luxury, especially on a cold day at Wrigley.

Three down:

  1. Seiya has been pretty hot and cold at the plate this year, and leads the league in strikeouts. He had two more today, though he did manage to pick up two of the many walks that the Padres pitching staff was handing out.
  2. Nate Pearson was a little rocky coming on in relief of Boyd, but a seven run cushion is a nice time to struggle a smidge.
  3. Not much else to complain about Cubs-wise, so I’ll grumble at MLB/Gameday audio for running the same 5 ads on every radio broadcast for the past week and change. At this point I’m going to be haunted by the phrase Oppo Taco.

Next up:

The Cubs go for a sweep against the second(?) best team in baseball at 1:20 PM CT. Ben Brown takes on fifth starter/KBO career resurrectee Kyle Hart.

I know it was mentioned about 1000 times in the broadcast but that was a pretty cool 1000th career game for Happ

My first thought upon hearing it was Happ’s 1,000th game was that I was shocked he’s been playing that long. My second thought was, how the theoretical fuck did Cal Ripken play 2.5+ Happ careers worth of consecutive games?

The baby blue jerseys look cool. I wish the Cubs would officially designate them as the City Connects, though. I don’t love the idea of them as a pure alternate and I still have a probably vain hope that they’ll do some kind of throwback alternate for Sunday home games or something.

Also they really should bring back the red bills on the road caps.

I like em better than I did at first but they’re still not my fave. I’m not feeling the new logo and don’t like the hats. I still like them better than the wrigleyville tops however. But the wrigleyville hat definitely slaps.

I’d like it better if they used the other logo I’ve seen floating around which has the old bear with a bat, except with a guitar instead.

    Rice Cube,

Wasn’t it 2023 when the Cubs didn’t win on a Sunday until like August? I hope that doesn’t happen again. That was the second Sunday loss in a game they should have put away.

But yeah, big oof for Duke.
