OSS: Cubs bomb their way out of a mini losing streak
Three Four Five up:
- Kyle Schwarber's three run bomb in the fourth was the biggest play of the game. It broke a 2-2 tie and the Cubs never really looked back from there.
- Kris Bryant also had a nice day at the plate, homering in the first and following up War Bear's homer with a triple.
- Not to be outshined, Javy Baez also had a homer and triple on the day, and added two singles to boot. Today's onslaught brought his slash line up to .269/.315/.507, good for exactly 100 wRC+
- ????????????Jon Lester picked off a baserunner!????????????
- The Cubs got a no drama multi-inning relief outing from Edwards.
Three down:
- By Grabthar's hammer, this game felt longer than yesterday's even with its rain delay. Lester and Hellickson are not fast workers, and were not getting any help at all from the home plate ump either. Lester threw a ton of pitches in the first, and yet again an opposing team scored in the opening frame. I know in the long run it doesn't really matter when in a start a run is scored, but it's always frustrating to see it happen in the first.
- The loser on the day WPA-wise was Heyward, who went 0-3 with a walk.
- The Cardinals won today.
Next up: Jake Arrieta takes on Jerad Eickhoff, who deserves to lose based on the spelling of his name alone, at 6:10 PM CT.

Those were supposed to be siren emojis above, but somehow all the question marks looks even funnier (dying laughing).

I missed the emoji war.

Rice Cube,
Nobody talks about it, but Andrew Jackson would have prevented that emoji war.

Only because he would have displaced the millions that disagreed with him.

So the Cubs might be looking for starting pitching. The Mets have a surplus of starters but need help with versatility. Theo should give them a call.

cerulean,
They could always call up the Pirates and offer Jay/Szczur for Taillon (dying laughing)

I keep seeing this come up, and since I’m too lazy to read every word, is this the newest iteration of flipping for Nolasco?

I can think of a few good reasons why this would be a bad idea, but I might consider seeing what Edwards can do as a starter. Might wait for him to give up a run first, but he sure looks good out there.
uncle daveQuote Reply
If the Cubs’ track record (Dempster, Samardzija) is any indication, their best bet is to convert a bad reliever into a starter.

Rizzo the Rat,
Get Duensing stretched out ASAP then.

uncle dave,
I think Edwards should get two or three nnings every time he goes out there (unless his control is really bad). I would not mind he and Montgomery tag-teaming some starts. I have a soft spot for those two working together.

I hate first innings so much.

I thought Jake’s stuff looked pretty good?

If Schwarber wants to get his average over .200, he might want to make contact with the ball occasionally.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
cerulean,
Fuck it, put him out there for the first and pull him. Looks like that’s what it will take to get out of the gate without giving up any runs.
uncle daveQuote Reply
uncle dave,
CJ in the first would be like the proverbial irresistible force meeting an immovable object.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
uncle dave,
Has it ever occurred to you that the reason he hasn’t given up any runs is because he isn’t pitching in the first?

Just saw the replays on the two runs—I think Heyward gets the guy at the plate and I am certain he catches that liner.

Crap.

Heyward has to have the most loud outs of any Cub this year.

Just me repeating a joke I made during the Pirates series after Marte’s replacement looked awful defensively.
