Cubs 9, Reds 2 (9.21.16)

OSS: The Cubs get to do this one more time to close out the season.

Three Four Five up:

  1. It was a big day for Miguel Montero, who went 3-5 with 3 RBI and scored on a balk. He’s had a rough year all around, but it’s been nice to see him warm up these last few weeks. I get the feeling that he was mostly put into these games to make sure Willson is fresh for the playoffs, but he’s been quietly taking a victory lap in what might be his last season with the Cubs, or any team. Of course, the Cubs have several million reasons to keep him around as the backup catcher next year.
  2. Bryant has been pressing at the plate a bit of late, but he broke out of it with a 5000 ft (approximate measurement) home run late in this game.
  3. Dex and Zobrist also had great games, going 5-8 with a home run and five runs scored between them. They carried the team for stretches early this season, and if one of them gets hot again it could spell trouble for other teams.
  4. Jason Heyward seemingly hit nothing but line drives today, which was nice to see.
  5. The Cardinals and Mets lost, the Pirates won, and the Giants are losing as I write this. The odds of a four-way tie for the wild card are definitely improving!

Three down:

  1. The Cubs were all over the basepaths today, so it’s not too surprising that John Lackey ended up with a bunch of PAs in relatively high leverage situations. It’s also not too surprising that he didn’t do much with them. It will be interesting to see how aggressive Joe will be with pinch hitting for his starters in the playoffs. Well, pitchers other than Jon Lester, hitting machine.
  2. The Reds are so bad that the rest of these were stolen and put in the above column.

Next up: The Cubs get an off day then host the Cardinals for a weekend series. Mike Leake faces Jake Arrieta on Friday afternoon.

    Edwin,

    Big if true.

I mean, if I’m going out of my way to consume a big pile of fruit all at once, I’m probably doing it in part to cut down on the old dairy. Even yogurt isn’t really helping here, unless it’s fat free I guess.

Why do fruit smoothie recipes often have milk in them? I get yogurt, but not milk. Weird.

Without the milk, they’d be too thick. It’s been awhile since I’ve made a smoothie and I’m not sure I ever made a peach one, but my guess would be that there would be less milk added to that than, say, a banana one. Or maybe it’s just the same and the peach smoothie isn’t as thick as the banana one. Or it could be Big Milk.

Any opinions on iPhone 6 vs. 6S?

Why so many questions today? One per day. How many times do we have to tell you?

The 6s is noticeably faster and the touch ID is finally useful and as responsive as it should have been when it was first released. I’d get the 6s just for those two things.

    dmick89,

I’d use a little apple or orange juice to thin my smoothie if necessary. I kinda thought the yogurt (and, I guess milk) was for creating a “creamier” texture rather than thinner one. I dunno.

    SK,

That would be better, but people tend to have milk on hand more frequently than they do apple or orange juice. If it was me, I’d use white grape juice, but that’s just me.

    dmick89,

I got a 6 but my provider dropped prices like the next day so I can exchange it if I want. I am happy with the 6 and a little concerned about the 6S being heavier, but I also figure those features you mention might be worth the hassle.

    SK,

I didn’t notice the weight and I’m pretty picky when it comes to that (I can’t stand cases because they make the phones clunky and heavy). I didn’t have all that much trouble with touch ID on the 6, but when I got the 6s, I was impressed with how quickly the phone responds. Sometimes too much, which is why iOS10 forces you to press the home button to unlock the phone. It’s also so much faster than the 6.

The SE is also a good call if you want something easier to use one-handed. It’s basically a 5s-sized 6s, except that it doesn’t have 3D touch and it still has the older front-facing camera.

    Perkins,

Good call. My previous phone was a 5 and I always liked it and never had any problems with it until recently, and then it was just a worn out battery. So I miss the easy one-hand action, but I did kind of want a slightly bigger screen.

I used to hate the giant cases, but will make sure to get one for my next phone after I broke the screen on this one. The only surprise was that it didn’t happen sooner, I’m way too clumsy (dying laughing). A shattered screen is pretty annoying and disqualifies it for buyback when upgrade. I got used to the big case pretty quick after it came with my work cell.

I was nervous about the size when I jumped from 4 to 6 but adjusted super quickly. I got a six plus for my work phone and wished I had done the same for my personal after like a week, I can one hand it no problem even with my Trumpian hands.

This is why I went with the SE. My hands are actually large, but I have short-ish fingers. Very easy to use the SE one-handed.

    SK,

I just got the 7 upgrading from the 6. The 6S is cool for the fact you have the force touch which allows you to do pretty cool thing like responding to a text while you are in an app without leaving the app. You also can open specific pages within an app. For example I can go straight to one of my espn fantasy teams from the home screen.

6s also takes the living photos and has battery life. When ios10 came out my 6 was lasting about 10 hours on a charge.

    dmick89,

    Re: cases

I hated cases and did without one until I dropped my phone 2 feet on to the ground and cracked the screen. I got the Apple made leather case and I love it. It adds a little bulk but feels great. I’d recommend it especially if you plan on selling your phone when you upgrade in the future.

    JKV,

The only phone I ever dropped was a 6 plus. I dropped it twice, which is why I went with the smaller 6s. I’ve heard good things about the Apple case. Do you like the 7? I’ll be upgrade eligible next month so I’m hoping the jet black color is still available.
