Cubs acquire Hunter Cervenka to complete Marlon Byrd trade

In News And Rumors by dmick8938 Comments

The Cubs and Red Sox completed the Marlon Byrd trade today as the Cubs acquired Hunter Cervenka. Cervenka is a 22 year old in A ball with a minor league ERA of 5.97. He has struck out over 8 batters per 9 innings, but he's also walked 7.2 per 9. I'd write more on this, but I'm afraid what I've just writen is more than likely the most that will ever be written about one Hunter Cervenka.

Seeing as this is barely news you should go ahead and get back to our daily baseball bingo. It's more fun than trying to figure out who this guy is and why the Cubs had to take him. Carlos Marmol could actually give this guy tips on throwing strikes. If there is anything positive to say about Cervenka it's that so far this year he's struckout nearly 14 batters per 9 innings. It's only 15 innings and prior to this year it was always around 8 so I'm hesitant to think he's improved much or any at all in that regard. The walks are still absurdly high.

    What is up with this?

He played in the Arizona Rookie League last year and now he’s at AAA? He’s 19.

That seems a bit insane, doesn’t it? Dude hasn’t played above rookie league. I sure hope these scouts have seen something because all I can think right now is that Thoyer don’t realize that Iowa is AAA and not short-season rookie league.

Amaya is just filling in on the bench until DeWitt clears waivers.

They didn’t have anyone else to do that? How odd. I wonder where he’ll go next. Looks like he should get promoted to somewhere.

Amaya did go 1-1 with a double today for the Iowa Cubs. Crazy. They must see something they really really really really like with this kid.

Why would DeWitt stick around the Cubs?

They are the only one where he has a chance to get back on the ML roster. He’s a Darwin Barney or Adrian Cardenas injury away from being back in the majors. I’m sure his agent has been calling other teams to gauge their interest and there is none.

Probably, but at some point don’t you just say fuck it and move on from the team who keeps DFAing your ass?

Not if you aren’t ready for your career to be over. the Cubs DFA him, but still want to keep him, they just don’t want to keep him badly enough to not expose him to the waiver wire. That’s more than anyone else wants him, I’d imagine.

    @ Aisle424:
He’s already exposed to the waiver wire. I’d think at this point if it were me I’d go sign a minor league deal with another team. That’s just me though.

I was at the White Sox game today for our yearly work department outing. I wasn’t sober past the pre-1st inning.

    @ GBTS:

Who would do that to him on day he pitched?

I’ll just assume Dale Sveum was involved.

I think there should be the same rule for players as foul balls: if one goes out of play into the stands, a fan gets to take him home as a souvenir.

Regarding the spray charts and the game-winning hit in the game yesterday, the pitch from Dolis was a bit outside, on the right edge of the plate. If a right-handed hitter “goes with the pitch”, he’s going to hit it to right field. If the pitch had been more to the middle of the plate, then it might have been hit directly to Barney.
