According to Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs and Rangers are getting closer to an agreement on Matt Garza.
One official tells Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports that the Cubs and Rangers are “getting closer” on a Garza trade (Twitter link). Rosenthal adds that third base prospect Mike Olt is “possibly” in play, but the two sides are discussing prospects from multiple levels.
Olt’s stock has dropped and has fairly similar numbers to Brett Jackson. That said, the Cubs only control Garza through this season so I’m not expecting nearly as much as a lot of people. We shall see.

CJ Edwards is in play per Rosenthal.

Great numbers, c+ rating according to Sickels. Olt and Edwards would be a pretty good deal for the Cubs.

with CJ Edwards, I’d imagine that C+ is going up after this season, he is dominating right now. Exactly 0 HR given up in 160.1 professional innings. Combine that with 11.6 K/9 and 3.51 BB/9, and I don’t care how low in the minors this guy is, he looks like a sweet prospect on the statsheet.

I would be happier than most with Olt coming back in the deal. HIs whole-season AAA numbers are not at all top-prospect stuff… but something was wrong with the guy (they claimed his vision) and since his return from the DL he’s hit to the tune of .253/.348/.500. Sure, small sample size warning, but that’s pretty much in-line with his career minor league numbers: .269/.375/.500.
Whether it was his eyes or an injury or the need to make an adjustment, it appears that things have been fixed, and is back to the form of a guy that was a top-25 prospect heading into the season.

@ Andrew:
No doubt it’s going up and his numbers are damn impressive. So are some of the scouting reports. That said, he was a 48th round pick for a reason. Based in what he’s done, I have no clue why, I’m just saying.

I’ll be plenty happy. His vision is concerning though. That’s why he might be available for Garza and I’ll be happy if they get him.

I also think there’s a bit of “what have you done for me lately” when it comes to these prospect rankings. That’s understandable because a guy is a prospect until he gets to the point where he can’t hack it anymore or his opponents figure out how to exploit his weaknesses and then he’s not a prospect anymore…. but I think it’s at least as likely that Olt just had something wrong with his vision or something and that he is currently under-rated. If the Cubs want to take advantage of that in a deal for Garza, fine by me.
shawndgoldmanQuote Reply
@ dmick89:
Yup, that’s exactly how I feel. The vision thing is particularly concerning because they still don’t have a firm diagnosis of what caused it. (Right?) But if that lowers his value enough for the Cubs to get him plus another prospect or two for Garza… well then that’s awesome work by the Cubs’ FO.

I read somewhere that they fixed whatever the problem was. I know Ryno said the same thing when this came up the other day.
wrt Edwards, I’d copy and paste what I’ve said about Kyle Hendricks and Trey McNutt this year. I’m too cynical about meh pitching prospects that suddenly have great years (lack of F7 skepticism notwithstanding).
BerseliusQuote Reply
Given Alcantara’s step forward this year and the looming presence of Baez I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cubs are feeling less urgency towards getting a 3b prospect these days.

I wouldn’t be unhappy. I also don’t think Garza is worth more than Olt. But the demand for Garza right now sounds like its higher than his worth. I’m expecting a lot more than just Olt for Garza because of that.
I believe he’s the only impact player on the market. A team like the Rangers who is trying to get another shot at the WS or a team that thinks a top end starter will push them to the playoffs may risk some of their long term future for him.
I know we talk about getting the BPA in a trade and figure it out later. But say we get Olt. From top to bottom in the system we would have Olt, Villanueva, Bryant, Candelario. Not to mention Baez. That’s a pretty serious log jam especially for promoting players next year.

I am getting fed up with Chrome. It seems to be a giant memory hog, and shit breaks down if I install an ad block extension. Anyone else have similar issues? Any suggestions?

I’ve never been the biggest fan of Chrome on the desktop, but I do prefer their iOS app to Safari. That’s likely to change in a couple months as it appears iOS Safari has adopted many of the things that makes the mobile Chrome currently superior.
dmick89Quote Reply
I go back and forth between Safari and Firefox on the Mac. Every once in awhile I’ll open Chrome to access open tabs on my mobile devices, but other than that, I never use it.

I’m on a Windows machine. As far as iOS devices I don’t bother using my iPad (which I got free — wouldn’t have bothered buying one) and the kind of browsing done on the iphone is so basic I don’t mind using safari.
So I’m looking at what to do with the laptop. Maybe I’ll go back to Firefox

I’ve recently found Safari to be much, much better at managing resources on the mac, especially when streaming media.

I bought low on Olt in my keeper-league fantasy team, and so I’ve been following him since he went on the DL. They claim they’ve fixed whatever is wrong, and there’s reason to believe them as he’s currently producing at about the level you would have expected entering the season, so I’m fairly confident he’s currently underrated on the prospect lists. There’s admittedly a bit of confirmation bias in that analysis.

How many of these guys are capable of playing corner OF spots, and still retain positive value? That’s the key question – 3B are valuable in part because they have room to move down the defensive spectrum. So it’s not as big of a problem as it would be to have a glut of 1B-men.
I wonder… does Valbuena have any value in a trade? He could be a “super-utility” guy, but it appears the Cubs want to try Lake out in that role.
shawndgoldmanQuote Reply
Olt is likely an .800-OPS guy with plus defense at 3B. That’s good to have when it’s cheap.

I’ve noticed that too. I’m hoping with the new OS that’s coming out in September I can use it exclusively. There are still a few things I find easier to do on Firefox, but it really sounds like the new Safari is going to fill all those needs. Plus, I’ll switch back to iOS Safari so there will be even more incentive to use it on the Mac.
I’ve also found that the Alfred App I use actually integrates better with Firefox, which is especially odd since it’s a Mac productivity app. There are only a few actions I’ve noticed that with and maybe it’s how I’ve set up my workflows (guess I should look into that, huh?) so it’s not a big deal. Most of the stuff I use Alfred for has nothing to do with a browser though I do love my workflow that allows me to open Alfred with a hotkey and type ‘stats player name’ and have his corresponding Fangraphs, Bref and Prospectus page open in the browser. Fantastic for working on articles since I do like to use all versions of WAR.

I’ve been mostly using Safari since getting my MBP, but I haven’t found its memory management particularly great. I’ve often noticed “Safari Web Content” hogging a decent chunk of background memory, though that might not necessarily be Safari’s fault. I’ve been underwhelmed in general by the OS’s memory management anyway. Any time I finish running a memory intensive program (research or otherwise) it always takes the OS way longer than it should to let other programs know that the memory is available again.
