Cubs @ Brewers

In Game Threads by Obstructed View Staff247 Comments

The Cubs have recalled Jeff Stevens and officially placed Randy Wells and Andrew Cashner on the DL. Casey Coleman will be called up prior to Sunday’s start and presumably James Russell will get the start on Tuesday in Cashner’s place. Onto the game tonight.

Cubs wOBA wRC RS Brewers wOBA wRC RS
Jeff Baker .312 .477 -0.13 Rickie Weeks .349 .631 -0.02
Starlin Castro .332 .546 -0.03 Carlos Gomez .297 .405 0.04

Tyler Colvin .318 .426 0.00 George Kottaras .317 .425 0.00
Carlos Zambrano .175 .000 0.00 Randy Wolf .175 .000 0.00
4.4 -.2 4.3 -0.10

Interesting that as much as Cubs fans make fun of the Brewers defense that the Cubs defense is quite a bit worse this season. I’m just as guilty as anyone here.

Starting Pitcher IP/GS FIP
Carlos Zambrano 5.81 3.92
Randy Wolf 6.19 4.42
Bullpens xFIP
Cubs 3.94
Brewers 4.74

Cubs score 5.3 and Brewers score 4.7. Cubs win probability is 50.8%.

Did you do these pregame numbers back at ACB? They rule. WE and everything.

How do you do the wRC again? Take the season so far and scale down to 5 PA or something? And something similar for RS?

I’ve always wished fangraphs showed wRC per PA so that you can say “Every time so-and-so comes to the plate, we can expect X runs.” But what’s above is also a great way to present the data.

We did them in the early part of the 2010 season and then by mid-May when the team was out of contention it seemed kind of pointless. I hope we keep doing them here all season regardless, but people lose interest when the team is out of contention so we’ll see.

I agree with DJ that Branyan is a good idea for the Rays, but they already dug a big hole and they were behind the Yankees and Sox in the talent department before. At $2M I think Manny was still a decent gamble (unless we find out everyone knew about this 2nd test).

That said, my interest I guess will turn back to the process. It is almost a foregone conclusion that James Shields and BJ Upton would be starting Opening Day 2012 on some other team, but now the midseason trade is more possible. Really, anyone not part of the core (Price, Hellickson, Longoria, Zobrist, one of SRod/Brignac) could be traded (or hopefully plays into FA compensation at the end of the year).

Also, my attention turns more to the draft and the shitload of picks they have.

The point is that this organization has to start thinking outside the box a little. Just calling up Thomas Diamond to start would likely doom the Cubs to three losses in the games he starts. He’s not a major league pitcher. So maybe Wood’s not the answer. Neither is Diamond. Maybe Chris Carpenter is; heck, maybe even give Trey McNutt a shot at it. But just try to think differently from the way people have thought before. Check out Chicago sports coverage at SB Nation Chicago by Al Yellon

Wait, the Cubs have had plenty of dumb ideas in the past. I guess Wood to the rotation isn’t just dumb it’s colossally stupid. 1908 is a recent championship I’ve enjoyed.

The more I think about this, the more sense it makes. Why not Kerry Wood? Three times in three weeks, give him the ball and let him start. Call up Scott Maine, Esmailin Caridad or Jeff Stevens to be the last guy in the bullpen. Sean Marshall can take over Wood’s setup duties for a while. It’s an unorthodox, outside-the-box idea… but it just might work. Incidentally, if the Cubs did decide to give Wood the ball to start Tuesday in Houston, it would be 13 years to the day that he made his major league debut, April 12, 1998 in Montreal.

Go for it, Jim Hendry and Mike Quade. Demonstrate some original thinking. It’s three games in three weeks. And… it just might work.

I know you’re just making jokes but not everything the Cubs do is outrageously stupid. I mean, his career OPS vs LHP is .907 while vs RHP it’s an abysmal .677, something even Barney can likely manage, and will play better defense doing it. That platoon, while both are righties, makes perfect sense.
