Only 58% eh. No faith in Monty.

Crap.

Come on, Coghlan.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
That sucks.
dmick89Quote Reply
They’re hitting Garza hard-ish
Rice CubeQuote Reply
That pitch almost hit Rizzo.
dmick89Quote Reply
Nice play, but that bunt call was stupid, even with Garza hitting.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
I’m a little worried that some day a pitcher will swing away and take Rizzo’s head off.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Rizzo!

Welp.

Grimm injury update:
Hammel poisoned him for his spot in the pen.
ceruleanQuote Reply
At least Garza didn’t shut them out.
dmick89Quote Reply
What happened to Grimm?
dmick89Quote Reply
Never mind:
Patrick Mooney @CSNMooney
Sounds like Justin Grimm tried to pitch through a stomach virus. No apparent arm issues. Go back to your projected playoff rosters.
dmick89Quote Reply
Lead off walks never come back to hurt you.

Joe Smith fucking sucks.
dmick89Quote Reply
That ball was hit about 8000 feet.
dmick89Quote Reply
Villar? Really?
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Apparently, those “steroids” chants don’t work against Braun.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Rizzo needs to answer. This time with Bryant on.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Ugh.

I hate this series.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Damn.
ceruleanQuote Reply
Lame. But at least the Cardinals lost.
PerkinsQuote Reply
Good things about this series:
1. Rizzo is hitting dingers again.
2. Um…
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Rizzo the Rat,
Joe Smith continues to paint an obvious picture to Joe why he doesn’t belong on the postseason roster.
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
Smith was doing well off the DL until Villar teed off against him! I can’t really blame him for that; Villar is just another weak hitter who mysteriously turns into Ted Williams against the Cubs.

Anyway, new magic number:

(dying laughing), Joe’s postgame quote was pretty much “I wanted to make sure he didn’t shit his pants on the field”

Game recap:

Rizzo the Rat,
He’s thrown, what, 4 innings since coming off the DL? Joe Smith sucks. When he gets lucky and has a season in which his walk rate is better than his career average, he’s pretty good, but otherwise he’s not.
dmick89Quote Reply
The Cubs 3rd order winning percentage is finally under .700. It’s .699. (dying laughing)
dmick89Quote Reply
FWIW, multiple Cubs podcasts (and Maddon?) were talking up how good his stuff has looked since coming back from the DL.

Extremely small sample size alert, obvs, for scouting too
BerseliusQuote Reply
Berselius,
I hope so because he’s probably going to be on the playoff roster. He’s also probably going to cost the Cubs a win in the playoffs so there’s that too.
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
You really think he’ll crack the playoff roster? Even if the Cubs go with 8 relievers, I’d assume he doesn’t make the cut. Chapman, Rondon, Strop, Grimm, Edwards, Hammel, and Wood are probably locks. That leaves one spot for Montgomery, Cahill, Smith, Zastryzny, and whatever other bullpen detritus remains. Even if Maddon wants 8 relievers plus Hammel, I have to think Cahill and Montgomery make the cut before Joe Smith. Only way I can see Smith making the postseason roster is if there’s one or more injuries to the relievers who don’t suck.
So maybe they should bubble wrap Chapman, Strop, Rondon, and Grimm is what I’m saying.
PerkinsQuote Reply
Good point. I’d say Cahill is very likely to make the roster, but could see it come down to Monty or Cahill and it depending on matchups.
dmick89Quote Reply
This. Do whatever you can to keep those guys healthy. The rest of the guys in the bullpen probably won’t be pitching in postseason wins except for possibly Wood. And I’m anticipating a lot of postseason wins. About 11 of them.
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
So, he sucks except when he’s good? He has a deserved reputation as a righty specialist (career .213/.287/.306 against RHH). I didn’t like his facing Villar, though.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
I just hope Maddon uses Chapman as more than a one-inning closer in the playoffs. It would suck to have given up so much for him only to use him in specific, arbitrary situations.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
More elbow problems for Strasburg, even if he is back for the playoffs he probably won’t be 100%
berseliusQuote Reply
That really sucks. I hope it’s not another torn UCL.
PerkinsQuote Reply
Looks like his UCL is okay, it’s some sort of flexor mass thing. No timetable on his return though.
berseliusQuote Reply
That’s good at least. Though the Nats look somewhat less formidable now.
PerkinsQuote Reply
Brewers doing a hell of a job to bring the Cubs’ magic number to 8.
PerkinsQuote Reply
Perkins,
Assuming no miraculous comeback for the Cardinals in the 9th, the magic number is indeed down to 8.
