Rizzo back issue seems early season precautionary at this time. Still annoying that they can’t treat it quickly or just use the DL already.

Pirates followed by the Braves and Mets. I could see a world in which the Mets are good and I can even imagine one in which the Braves are, but the Pirates aren’t.

Rizzo the Rat,
I don’t think it’s a great bullpen, but it’s much better than it was last year. Not that the front office is always right (they aren’t), but they agreed with that too, which is why almost half the guys in this bullpen weren’t anywhere to be found in the Cubs organization this time last year. I’m not a big fan of spending money on relievers, but I’m glad the Cubs went in the direction they did rather than insisting the bullpen really isn’t that bad.
dmick89Quote Reply
I expected the good ERA number, but would never have guessed that they also have the best FIP in the league.
berseliusQuote Reply
How? Morrow is not an improvement over Davis, Cishek’s protections aren’t better than Rondon’s and Butler projects to have an ERA over 5.00.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
The main improvement in the Cubs pen from last year is a full year of Justin Wilson (hoping he doesn’t walk everybody like last year).
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
I think Rondon is mostly where you and I have disagreed. Butler sucks and Morrow and Davis are about the same in my opinion. Strop is Strop and Edwards is going to lose the strike zone every third time out. I think Wilson should be good, but there was clearly something going on with him last year. I think Rondon sucks and he was being counted on in important innings. You don’t. I’m glad I don’t have to see any more home runs allowed by Rondon.
dmick89Quote Reply
Why do you think you know better than the projections? You know that home run rates are highly variable over the sample sizes relievers work in.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Weird shit for me this year has been if I try to chromecast from my phone to my TV, it starts the game from the very beginning even if i’m starting the stream half-way through (the live game). And won’t let me fast forward.
But if I chromecast from my PC to TV, it picks up the feed in real time like you would expect.
SKQuote Reply
Rizzo the Rat,
I don’t think I know better, but I’m also not sure how much I give a shit about projections when it comes to relievers. They’re somewhat useful, but given the small samples that relievers will pitch, I think their usefulness is limited. Rondon has dealt with some arm issues the last couple years so I actually think the odds for him requiring surgery before the year is out is probably pretty high. I think the home runs numbers are partly luck, but also partly due to whatever soreness he’s had in his arm since his great start in 2016. Basically, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that those numbers went to shit after the soreness started, which is what made the Cubs so interested in Chapman.

MLB.tv worked fine for me on Apple TV, but I noticed that the notifications on my phone were coming in about ten minutes late starting around the 5th inning.
