Cubs listening to offers for Jeff Samardzija

In Commentary And Analysis, News And Rumors by dmick8933 Comments

The Cubs are listening to offers for any player on their roster. If they were not, they would not be doing a good job. Even the most valuable player in baseball is available for the right offer.

The asking price for Jeff Samardzija should be high. He has 2+ years of club control and both of those will be relatively cheap. It's unlikely any team will match what the Cubs would want, but you've got to listen.

The Cubs and Samardzija reportedly talked contract extension after last season and will do so again this offseason. I expect they'll come to an agreement on a 5 or 6-year extension prior to the start of the 2014 season.  If they are unable to reach a deal, it becomes more likely that the Cubs will be willing to come down on their demands by midseason if they aren't contending.

At that point, Samardzija would still be controlled by the team who traded for him beyond 2014 and we know that teams are seeking those kinds of pitchers more than ever. I don't think it will come to that.

    @ dmick89:

A google news search for “CJ Edwards cubs debut” comes up with an article that says he’ll start tomorrow for Daytona. I’d post a link to the article but it’s behind a paywall. I only know from the preview on the search results page.

I wonder/speculate/wild guess that it was just one of those things where he missed “his slot” in the Daytona rotation and then they had to wait for it to come around again.

Well, the pitcher still has to throw a reasonable strike, which it was. Guess the ump just wanted them to walk off, too bad it didn’t work out for the ump show.

Tested out the embed stuff. I can get it working using the trick GW mentioned about deleting the wrapper in the HTML view, but that’s it. Not working in visual view and not working (for me at least) in comments.

I’m sticking by my prediction that the Cubs deal Samardzija. It’s not that I think they’ll have any difficulty signing him or that they’ve lowered their expectations/value on him, I just have a feeling some team will feel desperate enough to meet the high asking price.

    Also, I’m not dead.

It’s funny to think of the Cubs NOT listening to offers for Smaradzija.
