dmick89,
On the Cubs’ needs:
Starting, contact, power, patience, defense, finishing.
Let’s say those are the six most important facets of a baseball team. The Cubs are most deficient in finishing games—Rondon and Strop excepted. Wood and Cahill have extraordinary lucky that their walks have not hurt them and their sub-.200 BAAs will revert at least some. Having that third guy who can shut teams down is a luxury, just like having insurance is a modern luxury.
Most people pay thousands to insurance companies for absolutely nothing—they should be thankful that they never “get their money’s worth”, because on the occasion of need, that overpayment can payoff well beyond any amount that ever could have been put in, even if they wish they didn’t need it. A luxury becomes necessity.
That’s where the Cubs are. I have enough faith in the savvy of Thoyer not to sell the farm for an expiring contract, but at this point, having that great bullpen is pretty close to need.
It may turn out that they rip through the playoffs on the back of their starting pitching and blowout everybody with their power #neverRondon. Maybe they run into a buzzsaw and the offense sputters #weStinks. Both are certainly plausible, but having that one extra guy for the rest of the time when shit gets real is luxury the Cubs should afford.
And that’s saying nothing of injury.

Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Was Contreras expected to be a clean-up hitter level power bat at this level? I mean, I know he was a top prospect, but I guess I didn’t realize he could be a major slugger. It’s early, but this is truly Schwarberesque.
SKQuote Reply
SK,
No, he probably won’t be. I’d guess 25 home runs in his prime. He’s just on fire right now.

Error, should have been a called strike 3 and a walk on base in front of the grand slam.

That was a first inning I recently didn’t expect.

Nah. Koehler will retire the final 26 Cubs on about 72 pitches.

67 pitches through three. I know the Cubs have a historic starting staff yada yada yada, I am tired of these laborious innings.

Catches that take a player out of the field of play shouldn’t count. The last thing I ever want to see is a possible foul ball out that puts good players on the shelf. Make it not count, and players stop diving into stands. Also, catching a homerun and falling over the wall should be a homerun.

If Heyward leads off and lines out by sliding catch, at least four straight Cubs reach. Pretty sure that’s a universal rule.
ceruleanQuote Reply
dmick89,
How come Hendricks did not receive 1 earned run tonight. Im confused, I know there was walks and errors, but the grand slam?? That’s a hit and at least 1 earned run. Do I not know some rule of how they do those stats?
Rizzo the Rat,
Why? I’m confused boyr had grandslam that counted has a hit. Why no er’s

Rizzo the Rat,

That would have been a perfect spot for Vogelbach. Wood is a good batter for a pitcher, but not as an effective pinch-hitter in the eighth of a one-run game.

The Cubs will have to trade for Arismendy Alcantara.

Rizzo the Rat,
I didn’t see what happened to Zobrist. Did he stay in the game to run the bases after getting hit by the pitch? Heyward was limping around after getting hit too.
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
Yeah, he took his base after trainers looked at him, but came out for a defensive sub at the bottom of the inning. I’m guessing he’s just sore.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
With Trump and now Brexit, I am again struck by the appalling realization that if the Cubs don’t win this year, they might never get the chance. The end is nigh.
So it’s good they got the win today.

The current host fixed one of the issues (RSS feed not updating) so I’m going to see if they can get the other issue fixed before moving. This is the fastest server I’ve ever had a site on and really don’t want to move so I apologize in advance for any confusion the login glitch is causing. Please do keep me informed on when it occurs. I haven’t had it happen to me in about 3 days now, which is about 10 times longer than it’s gone without doing it before.
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
This server is indeed super fast, although I’m sure that also has to do with no ads and only a handful of users.
I haven’t had any glitch hassles lately.
SKQuote Reply
SK,
I’ve always tested the site with no ads and no users at all before finally moving the live site. I can assure you this is easily the fastest server we’ve been on. We don’t have the traffic that we did a couple years ago, but it’s busier than you think. There are about 2000 people who visit the site per day. That’s down considerably from a few years ago when I stopped posting as often as I used to, but more than a handful. I wish it would be more and hope to grow that over time, but we’re all busier with life than we were a few years ago.
