I am not going to around much till the fall so I thought I would share some parting thoughts re Doolittle vs Miller:

    a) Schwarber plus ML-ready bats for Miller plus Beltran plus some really good arms from the system makes almost too much sense for both sides on paper, but the Cubs just like Kyle too much as a human being—he’s the anti-Braun. To echo what has already been said, if the Yankees stupidly insist on Kyle, the Cubs move on. As for his place on the team, I still think that he will be serviceable in left next year and has a chance at rotating with Willson there and at catcher in 2018, but not next year.

    b) Doolittle’s very-good-but-not-historic performance and recent injury combined with his history of injury make him less attractive than Miller, who is putting up some of the most dominant numbers ever. However, Miller’s contract and the years of control are much less attractive than Doolittle’s. I think the risk is greater with Doolittle despite his relative age and the fact that he has the opportunity to be twice as valuable over the life of his contract than Miller will be over his. I prefer Miller in the short term and would like them to work out an extension to 2020 or beyond if they got him, so I am pretty optimistic about long term.

    c) Josh Reddick or Carlos Beltran would be good add-ons, particularly if Soler or Almora go the other way, but as I have said before, I would want at least one SP prospect to be coming back as well, one that misses bats and is likely to stick in the rotation. Because of that, I don’t think either Reddick or Beltran should be a focus in the trade.

    d) Rich Hill or Nathan Eovaldi are also interesting as part of the package but the starting pitcher going the other way would probably be Hendricks, and that would hurt, a lot. The Cubs should get a lot in return—way more than just a Hill or an Eovaldi—more than a Sonny Gray even their respective recent performances.

    e) With Bryant, Russell, Rizzo, and Contreras locks in the infield, Baez and Hendricks are the most valuable assets that I can see them trading. I don’t think they do, but if it takes one of them as part of the package to get Miller, I am okay with that.

Idiot FOX announcers are wondering out loud how good Bryant will be once he “settles in.”

Good chance of Josh Donaldson good. Outside chance of Mike Trout good.

That is, he might be a good player.

    SK,

Yeah, I don’t really get it except that they must feel comfortable with Contreras in LF now. I’m just a little sick of watching the Iowa Cubs in Chicago. I’d like them to get healthy.

    dmick89,

I would fist bump this if it was allowed

As fast as this server is, I might be able to try one of those bloated plugins without much issue. I’ll look into that later today or tomorrow.

This will have to do for a game thread unless berselius or Myles gets one done.

    dmick89,

Maybe it will be the reverse of last year; they sweep the Cubs in the season series, but the Cubs sweep them in the Championship Series. I’d take that trade-off gladly.

So I’m looking for a dog to adopt and the one I’m hoping is still available next week is a Lab mix. She’s 1.5 years old and so cute. We were talking about Grateful Dead dog names. Her name is Stella. How perfect is that?

This series against the Mets has proven to be more challenging for the Cubs than many MLB experts predicted.

Sweet Jesus. Can’t we just have one magical season where nothing goes wrong? Is that really so much to ask?

I think the question now is whether they can top the 97 wins from last year. Without a more productive left fielder, I’d say no despite their ridiculously hot start.

    Rizzo the Rat,

I do too. I knew they couldn’t keep pace with their early start and was skeptical they’d even win 100 well into their hot start. It just sucks the injuries have made this an average team at best. They need to get healthy and losing Schwarber really, really sucks.

The Cubs should literally just forfeit this game. Save Lester and the bullpen and go home early.

dmick89: They sure do lately. It’s like watching the 2011-2013 Cubs except they’re obviously a whole lot better than those teams.

Good news is the Reds are just around the corner again.

Can you throw in the towel in baseball? Surely the Cubs could just go get on a flight back to Chicago? The strategic decision here is to just quit. (dying laughing)

Remember the complaints that the blowouts earlier this year were boring? I want to go back in time and punch those people now.

I never complained about that. Who the hell was complaining about that? Those games are awesome.

I don’t want to name names. Mostly because I don’t remember.

Those 1927 Yankees comparisons are looking a little foolish now.

They always were. What’s kind of funny is how it wasn’t meathead Cubs fans saying this but the Fangraphs/538 crowd.

Of course this was the same sort of group trying to claim the 2015-16 Warriors were the best team of all time.

I don’t think Jordan has stopped laughing since.

If anyone were still alive from the ’27 Yankees I’m sure they would have had a chortle or two as well.

Diamondbacks also just tied Giants, and Texas lost, so Cubs somehow maintain best win% in majors despite sucking ass haha. Thank goodness for that start.

I don’t have high hopes for Gerardo Concepcion, but I do know this: he’s a lot better than Joel Peralta vs. lefties. So is just about any left handed pitcher in professional baseball.

Does MGL still blog? If he does, I can’t help but think he’s taking shots at Joe Maddon (deservedly so) for using Peralta as a LOOGY.

so, I gave up on the game/got distracted sometime around the 4th inning. How did Montero end up pitching in a game that ended in regular innings? Did Maddon just not want to burn any pitching arms?

I like that Heyward is hitting lower, but I also don’t get why Zobrist is getting a day off. This lineup looks like the Iowa Cubs with Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo on a rehab assignment.

I guess it makes some sense to spell Zobrist a lefty since they don’t have any lefty to take his place (when La Stella comes back, it will be different). The only hitters in the lineup who project to hit above-average against southpaws seem to be Baez (slightly), Bryant and Rizzo.
