Cubs Minor League Playoffs 2013; Daytona, Boise Game 1

Dunedin Blue Jays 1 @ Daytona Cubs 6

Kris Bryant led the way with 2 hits and a single. He also had enough RBIs by himself to win. The only extra-base hit was a double by Pin-Chieh Chen to lead off the Cubs in the bottom of the 1st (he'd come to score on a move to 3rd off a Zeke DeVoss fly out and a wild pitch). Dan Vogelbach and Dustin Geiger also singled, as did Elliot Soto.

The pitching was pretty great. New Cub Corey Black went 5 scoreless, scattering a quintet of hits as a single walk, fanning nine. Frank of the Valley pitched 2 scoreless, and Austin Reed followed it up with a scoreless frame of his own. Lendy Castillo surrendered the only Cubs run of the day, but it was unearned; an Elliot Soto error botched double play put Marcus Knecht in scoring position for a line drive to score.

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 0 @ Boise Hawks 3

The Hawks had 11 hits, but only pushed 3 across. Both Kevin Encarnacion and Yasiel Balaguert had a trio of hits, but Balaguert had 2 RBI and Encarnacion had none. Encarnacion did double once. Danny Lockhart doubled and singled.

Paul Blackburn was the ubermensch in this one, going 7 scoreless innings. He allowed 2 hits, no walks, and fanned 8. Hot damn. Zack Godley struck out 3 in his 2 innings, walking 1 and allowing a single hit as well.

  1. I can’t wait to get too-excited about Blackburn just to watch him become the next Trey McNutt while Dillon Maples gets traded to the Rays and becomes a stud.
