Iowa Cubs @ Oklahoma City Dodgers (Postponed)
I guess this is about the only way to keep Willson Contreras from having a good day.
Jackson Generals 8 @ Tennessee Smokies 4
The Smokies had 10 hits and took 7 walks, but managed only 4 runs. Almost all of them were in the first inning (3). Jacon Hanneman was 2-4 with a walk and 2 strikeouts. Chesny Young was 1-3 with a double, 2 walks and a strikeouts. Mark Zagunis has been on fire. He was 2-4 with a double, walk and strikeout. Billy McKinney took a couple more walks and was 1-3. Victor Caratini and Stephen Bruno were each 2-4. Jeimer Candelario's slide fell even more with an 0-5 performance.
Paul Blackburn didn't have a good start. He threw only 4.2 inning, allowed 6 hits and 4 runs. He walked 3 and struckout 7. It's nice to see him striking out some batters, but he gave up a lot of base runners. Prior to the game his strikeout rate had fallen below 5. His walk rate was 2.07. Like all the other Cubs pitchers, Blackburn doesn't strike anybody out. I'm honestly not sure what this organization was thinking. I know this is the cost of focusing so heavily on position players in the draft. That's worked out beautifully, but it's left the pitching pretty bare. I guess if the biggest reason to complain about this team is that their pitching that may only potentially be of use one day kind of sucks, well, it's more than worth it. And for the record, I'd not have done anything differently than what the front office did. It's just an unpleasant result in an otherwise fantastic rebuild.
Juan Paniagua lowered his ERA to 1.14 with 1.1 innings of work allowing 1 hit and no runs. He struckout 2. David Berg allowed 4 runs in 1.1 innings.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans 1, Salem Red Sox 7 (Game 1)
Charcer Burks played LF and batted leadoff in this one. He ws 2-4 with a double and a strikeout. The Pelicans didn't do much offensively. They only had 3 other hits. Gleyber Torres was 1-2 with a walk. Ian Happ was 1-3 with the team's only RBI. Trey Martin was 1-2 with a walk.
Jeremy Null threw 5 innings, allowed 5 hits, 3 unearned runs, walked nobody and struckout 3. There was another Dillon Maples sighting. He threw 0.2 innings, gave up 5 hits and 4 runs. He walked a batter for good measure and struck one out too. Jordan Minch cleaned up his mess.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans 2, Salem Red Sox 9 (Game 2)
The Pelicans had even fewer hits in this one (3). They also made 2 errors. Centerfielder Rashad Crawford was 1-4 with a double. Jason Vosler was 1-3 and Shawon Dunston Jr. was 1-2 with a walk and a strikeout. Ian Happ was 0-2 with a sac fly.
Jake Stinnett had a not so good outing. He threw 5.1 innings, allowed 12 hits and 9 runs. He walked a batter and struckout 4. Ryan McNeil threw the final .2 innings, allowed a hit, walked a batter and struck one out.
South Bend Cubs 3, Fort Wayne TinCaps 4
The top three batters in the order combined to go 0-11 with a walk. Ian Rice was 2-2 with 2 walks and a double. Eddy Martinez was 2-4 with a double, home run, 3 RBI and a strikeout. Bryant Flete was 2-4.
Ryan Kellog threw 6.2 innings, allowed 5 hits, and a run. He walked only 1 and struckout 7. Kellogg hasn't had a great season, but that was a pretty good start. He was in line for the win until James Norwood blew it. Norwood threw 0.2 innings, allowed 3 hits and 3 runs.

Contreras is a bust. A real prospect would have played anyway.

(dying laughing) that must have been an autocorrect error.
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
When learning how to type on a touchscreen, I always heard people say to trust autocorrect. They were all fools. Maybe it’s just me because I seem to have a strange and diverse vocabulary, but I never guesses right and quite often would be stubborn about not letting me type the words I wanted to type. I turned it off.

Gah, stupid blackout
berseliusQuote Reply
Yeah, could be any day now they clinch a playoff spot.
dmick89Quote Reply
berselius,
It’s on MLB Network, but you probably don’t get that where you’re at so never mind.
dmick89Quote Reply
That was a quick first inning for Lackey.
dmick89Quote Reply
I was planning to listen on the radio anyway, but our firewall interacts strangely with the gameday audio-only player. Usually I pull up the mlb.tv vid feed and change the audio to WSCR, but it won’t let me do that because of the blackout (dying laughing).

Bradley is making Cubs hitters look bad.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Heyward is so awesome defensively.
dmick89Quote Reply
Lackey evens it out with the long inning there.

I loved that Lackey fastball just as the batter was trying to call time out.

Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Surely the Cubs are going to get to Bradley at some point. Right?
dmick89Quote Reply
I liked Zobrist a lot more when he was batting .700. (dying laughing)
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
I was expecting him to give up way more walks than this.

At least the third time through the order is coming next inning. That’s something to look forward to.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
dmick89,
Cubs got to Milton Bradley.
joshQuote Reply
No, TV crew, I don’t need to see a replay of Segura’s inside-the-park home run earlier this year.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Fowler swung at likely ball four.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
I guess the only good thing here is that Bradley isn’t going to complete this one.
dmick89Quote Reply
Good as the Cubs have been, they are winless in games in which they didn’t score any runs.

Baez swings at everything.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
It started with Karros, then Neifi, then Bradley, Brenly, Barrett and Howry. Is this the 00’s Cubs reunion week?
SKQuote Reply
I liked Brenly until the Cubs got Soriano and got good.
SKQuote Reply
Look at that, another ’00 alum.
SKQuote Reply
Correct.
dmick89Quote Reply
That was a gift.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Strop finally threw a pitch on the zone.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
*in.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
He always annoyed me, but he took his awfulness to a new level with Soriano.
dmick89Quote Reply
Since we’re talking about 00’s Cubs, it’s worth noting that Baez’s walk rate isn’t even in the Pattersonian range.
dmick89Quote Reply
Sigh. Heyward grounds out to first base even against the 23 year old A-ball pitcher.
SKQuote Reply
(dying laughing), he’s the only Cub in the top 100. The next one is Bryant at 119
berseliusQuote Reply
Fuck. Thought that was an easy double.
dmick89Quote Reply
Out or not, that was some nice defense.
dmick89Quote Reply
Bad baserunning by Rizzo there. A runner on third with one out would have been nice.

On pace for 116 and in 1 game we will reach the portion of the season where there is no regression in records.
Myles HandleyQuote Reply
When you are 10-2, you are “on pace” for 95 wins or so. When you are 38-15, you are “on pace” for 11fucking6.
Myles HandleyQuote Reply
So I was leaving work with #Cubs up 1-0. I get in the car like 2 minutes later and they’re up 3-0 as I just missed Russell clearing the bags. Then I heard the complete fail on Javy’s little league homer. This team.
Rice CubeQuote Reply
Good news: The Pirates are down 4-1 in the second.
Bad news: Jered Weaver is pitching against them.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
And, just as I was typing my last post, the lead fell to 4-2.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Cubs are now +140. Tomorrow will be their 54th game of the season—the one-third mark. So the Cubs are on pace for 114 wins and a +420 run differential going into their final encounter with the our favorite team of all time—the Cincinatti Reds. A +450 run differential is not out of the question. (dying laughing)
