The Cubs have signed Jason Jaramillo and Andy Sonnanstine. Jaramillo, a 29 year old back-up catcher, has a little MLB experience and will fight it out to be Geovany Soto‘s back-up next year. Source: MLBTR.

The Cubs have also signed Andy Sonnanstine.

Jaramillo’s contract is a minor league one and I’m assuming the same is true for Sonnanstine. Both players will look to have strong performances in spring training and earn their way onto the roster. Sonnanstine has the much clearer path. They already have Welington Castillo and Steve Clevenger on the roster. Castillo will likely become the back-up and Jaramillo is probably nothing more than spring training roster filler.

Sonnanstine never reached the potential that many thought he could and after several years of not being any good the Rays finally cut him loose.

really like the sonnanstine pickup… Also not sure soto is the starting catcher. Unlss the oers have been miserable i expect him gone. However would not b surprised that if the offers are low holding onto him hoping he hits and then trading him at the deadine

I’m guessing Soto’s trade value is much less than we’d expect. I’m also guessing that the Cubs don’t want to begin the season with Welington fucking Castillo, Steven fucking Clevenger or Jason fucking Jaramillo as the starting catcher. I won’t be opposed, but they can probably pencil themselves down for about 19 wins if they trade Soto. The rest of those guys suck.
