I have to say the mobile interface is pretty solid, I didn’t want to switch on my computer yet but I may have to tweak my Scrooged parody idea now (dying laughing)
Kinda funny looking at the trade histories. Shelby Miller was traded to the Braves for Jason Heyward in a blockbuster deal with the Cardinals. Then he was traded in a blockbuster deal to the Diamondbacks for Dansby Swanson (other players involved both times). Then he played briefly for the Cubs after getting picked up for nothing and was unceremoniously released in between both players he was traded for being signed by the Cubs for the two biggest contracts in franchise history.
I think on one of the podcasts I predicted that the Cubs would end up with/settle for Swanson, (dying laughing). At least this means we can make jokes about The Swanson from time to time
“No one likes to spend money. But this is the price” of doing business, Cohen said, as the Mets want to win but aren’t interested in trading from their farm system. If this means operating at a loss in order to chase a World Series, that is fine in Cohen’s view. Also, the owner noted that the club also had a lot of holes to fill (mostly on the pitching staff) given its own extensive free agent class. While Nimmo and Diaz were retained, Jacob deGrom, Taijuan Walker, Chris Bassitt, Trevor May, Trevor Williams, Joely Rodriguez, and Tommy Hunter have all signed elsewhere.
“My team is good. But it isn’t that much better than last year. If you want a team that’s good, this is what it costs. What are you going to do?” Cohen asked rhetorically.
As much as there doesn’t appear to be a limit on New York’s spending, Cohen did say that Correa’s market conditions played a role in the Mets’ interest, as he was going to pursue a signing “that made sense…and not get crazy.” The fact that a $300MM offer on top of the Mets’ other spending doesn’t qualify as “crazy” is yet another eye-popping example of how Cohen is redefining baseball’s payroll limits, and yet “I’ve been dealing with big numbers for so long these numbers don’t scare me at all. It’s not like I’m not respectful about what these other teams have to deal with.”
It still chaps my ass that, coming off a CYA-finalist season from Darvish, Hoyer traded him for lottery tickets and one year of a guy who routinely couldn’t finish five innings.

Well, it’s better than nothing.

7 years, $177 million? It’s a lot, a ton, but not as bad as I feared and won’t get the Ricketts banned for life as I’d hoped.

Not even sure what it would take for me to like this deal.

dmick89,
Excellent defense and at least 25 HR?

andcounting,
The AAV is comparable to the other deals even if the years are less, so I guess Jed stuck to his guns

Swanson beating his career OBP of .321 would be a start (dying laughing)

Now get another cromulent pitcher and I’ll put my pitchfork away (dying laughing)

I guess Swanson is a better defender than I give him credit for.

berselius,
I mean he did just win a Gold Glove, as if that meant anything
Rice CubeQuote Reply
Rice Cube,
True, though to be fair I can think of another SS that won five gold gloves and had a career defensive WAR of -9.4, so large grain of salt 😉

I don’t hate it. I’ll like it even better if the Cubs get Justin Turner and a decent catcher.

All the other free agents the Cubs should’ve prioritized ahead of Swanson abruptly retire.

How about being better than Heyward while costing less in total and even less in inflation -adjusted salary?

I don’t really care if the Cubs don’t add another starting pitcher. But at this point they might have to use the DH to hit for the catcher.

I’m not in the broadcast area but others are saying Jesse Rogers just reported Drew Smyly is returning to the Cubs
