I have a sneaky suspicion Davis doesn’t have the equivalent of a slingshot and smooth stones to fell the Philliestines, but that’s why they play the game. Amiright?
Lots of great PAs against Oswalt in the top of the inning. Odd that it was Pena who popped out on the first pitch, since he’s usually so patient
Brenly was right though. He just missed that pitch. A quarter of an inch and that ball was sent 500 feet.
Brenly was right though. He just missed that pitch. A quarter of an inch and that ball was sent 500 feet.
Needed more on the x-coordinate there.
Anyone know what’s going on with Brett Jackson? He’s like the only thing I look forward to this season.
He sat for three straight games before playing again last night, no idea why.
Anyone know what’s going on with Brett Jackson? He’s like the only thing I look forward to this season.
Injuries and he hasn’t started to hit since coming back.
I really hope that Doug Davis does not start in Kansas City. There’s a good chance he’ll pitch one of those games and it’s going to piss me off. He’s the most boring player ever.
I really hope that Doug Davis does not start in Kansas City. There’s a good chance he’ll pitch one of those games and it’s going to piss me off. He’s the most boring player ever.
It might be nice to be able to take a nap between pitches though.
Ryan Howard does not believe in platoon splits.
Platoon splits kind of go out the window when a shitty pitcher like Doug Davis is involved.
I really hope that Doug Davis does not start in Kansas City. There’s a good chance he’ll pitch one of those games and it’s going to piss me off.
The Royals will sign Trachsel as an emergency starter for that game just to piss you off (dying laughing)
I’m going to all 3 games so there’s a 60% chance Davis starts in that series.
If the Cubs stay on schedule, it should be Dempster, Wells and Zambrano that series. Nice. I’d rather see Garza than Wells, but at least it’s not Davis. Davis will be pitching the game before the series opens vs the Royals.
I’m fairly certain we can’t expect anything better from Doug Davis than what we got today.
108 pitches! But I think Q runs him out again to start the 6th because he has to.
108 pitches! But I think Q runs him out again to start the 6th because he has to.
He probably would have if the pitcher’s spot didn’t come up that inning.
The Royals are killing the Angels right now. I know the pitching has been suspect but the offensive stars seem to be real deals. You might see a sweep in KC, mb (dying laughing)
The Royals are killing the Angels right now. I know the pitching has been suspect but the offensive stars seem to be real deals.
So, the Cardinals get the Rays, Orioles, and Blue Jays in interleague play. The Brewers get the Rays, Yankees, and Red Sox.
That makes sense.
Yes, it is just freaking stupid. I hope the rumored two 15 team leagues helps get that straightened out. I also hope they kill the home field for world series in the all star game. Bud Fucking Idiot Selig.
It seems they’re more position-player heavy and not too good on the pitching. Are the pitchers just kind of lurking in the wings?
5 of their top 10 were pitchers. They have about 7 guys that look to be #2 or #3 starters in the majors. Duffy likely the only one that shows up to KC this season. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/top-30-prospects-the-kansas-city-royals/
Odorizzi is off to a ridiculous start in High A. over 12 K per 9. 79 strikeouts, 14 walks, 57.2 innings. (dying laughing)
Yes, Duffy is here and will likely hang around and take the rookie bumps this season, but will probably be the only young promising starter KC calls up this year.
Yeah, if they spend a little money after they get good like the Rays did, they could run off multiple division championships and be a force in the playoffs. I can’t wait.
What’s wrong with interleague play? I’m assuming the unbalanced schedule doesn’t help much, but I kind of like the thought of playing teams that you normally don’t play.
Did they send Duffy down already?
No, sorry for being confusing. Duffy is in KC and will stay. No other pitcher is getting called up this year for KC that would be a prospect, maybe in a James Russel spot start situation, but not a top 10 prospect.
What’s wrong with interleague play? I think if they do the one interleague series per trip though, there are ways to balance it out better. Cramming interleague into one month makes it hard to achieve balance.
Understandable. I think if they do the one interleague series per trip though, there are ways to balance it out better. Cramming interleague into one month makes it hard to achieve balance.
I meant if they just had interleague as a full-season thing, not just crammed into one month.
Let’s say you two 3-game series each week in interleague play, which would be required with 15-team leagues. In ll reality, it’s probably an average of about 6.25 games per week, but we’ll use 6. The MLB season is 26 weeks long. That’s 156 interleague games, which is actually fewer than there are now so I’m all for it.
Has Al confirmed this yet?
Al is too busy asking rhetorical questions.
In other news, I see Sully is opining that the fans are going to let Quade and the team have it tomorrow night. That seems unlikely, as there would have to be people in the ballpark for that to happen.
4 other teams in division x 12 games each (6 home, 6 away) = 48 Games 10 teams in league, not in division x 6 Games each (3H / 3A) = 60 Games 15 teams in the other league x 3 games each = 45 Games (alternate home / away each season) i.e. Cubs go to Boston this year for 3 games, Boston come to Cubs next year for 3 1 Interleague rival that you always have a home and away series with each year adds 3 games Total of 156 Games

There won’t be 10,000 in the stands.
Apathy is the worst thing that could happen for the Cubs right now
It’s going to be like the mid 90s. I’m sure 424 can talk more about it, but I remember going to some a few weekend series in the early to mid 90s in September and there was nobody there.
I really do wonder what actually attendance is so far. Paid attendance is about 34,000 per game, but I doubt actual attendance is 25,000 per game. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s closer to 20,000.
If they went to 15 teams in both leagues then they should either do away with DH or institute it in both leagues. NL teams would have to start carrying a DH player on their roster regardless because they would be at a very big offensive disadvantage.
I’m hoping he does as I’m going to the game and it will make the Cubs getting their asses kicked interesting.
He got his first grand slam against the Cubs (off of Borowski in 2006), so it only makes sense that he gets 3000.

I live in central IL. My neighbor I guess has a family trip every year to a Cubs game. this year they messed up the schedule (or that’s the story) so they are stuck with 8 tickets for this weeks Cubs/Brewers game on Tuesday.
(dying laughing)
Wait, how can something be both irrelevant and non-existent?
If it happened, but is not germane to the matter(s) at hand, then it is irrelevant.
But if it “didn’t happen,” then it just didn’t happen. There has to be an event for it have been irrelevant. So either Cuban won a championship, and Al’s former complaint against him is now moot, or Al thinks Cuban didn’t win a championship, and is therefore a delusional person with a wicked Napoleon complex.

Because winning a title doesn’t change anything about Cuban’s ability as an owner. Using Alvin’s pea-brained logic, Cuban was a great owner at 9:45 pm yesterday, but not at 9:30 pm yesterday.

My head hurts.
Yellon has/had two main gripes: Cuban is “all about himself” and not the team (as if the Rickettses haven’t been shamelessly self-aggrandizing…but I digress) and that Cuban has never won a championship.
To my mind, this championship removes both those complaints, so Al has found recourse in the final refuge of the defeated: sophistry.

I figure if you as an owner put yourself out there in that way, you cause people who don’t know you to google what you do, and then those people find out about your product (lots of playoffs, decent team, new NBA champions) and that’s pretty much another form of advertising. Candidate A has a history of turning shit into gold, including a moribund franchise in a top-5 media market. He is likely one of the most overtly competitive owners in major sports, yet will set aside his ego and hire people he knows are more experienced in sports management than he.
Candidate B likes the team on sale. Met his wife at a game or some shit.

Will someone with a BCB account please ask Alvin why he prefers Ricketts to Cuban? And don’t let him get away with his bullshit “it’s all about him” response.
Baseball’s current alignment of teams is inherently unfair, because you have a 16-team league and a 14-team league, the difference being the six-team NL Central vs. the four-team AL West. Common sense says two 15-team leagues, but getting there from here is just about impossible.
For one thing, you’d have to find a team willing to move from the NL to the AL. The one that makes the most sense is Arizona, which could become the fifth team in the AL West, but then you’d need to move a team from the NL Central to the NL West to replace the Diamondbacks, and teams aren’t exactly clamoring for more games in the Pacific Time Zone, which are death to broadcast ratings. For that reason, the Texas Rangers would love to go the other direction, joining the AL Central. So good luck shuffling teams.
Secondly, how do you do a schedule if you have two 15-team leagues? You’d need inter-league play year round. That could happen, but it would be a real complication. And would you really want inter-league games in September when playoff spots are on the line?
He goes on to lay out two possible solutions. It’s nice expository writing, and it gives you a real sense of the difficulties involved here.
Was there a method to Mark Cuban’s near-invisibility during the Dallas Mavericks’ run to the NBA championship? The guy who scared MLB owners by his yelling at officials and constant need for affirmation could not have handled the playoffs any better, staying away from reporters and, after the clinching victory in Game 6, even allowing former Mavs owner Donald Carter to officially accept the trophy. When Stuart Scott tried to interview him, he deferred to coach Rick Carlisle. How could MLB not want a guy like this in its inner circle? Is there a chance that Cuban will surface as the guy to rescue the Dodgers? Or could he take over the Brewers if Mark Attanasio winds up trading in the Brewers for the Dodgers, as John Henry once swapped his holdings in the Marlins for the Red Sox? Could he figure in the Mets’ situation? You shouldn’t rule out anything. And MLB shouldn’t keep out Cuban. He’d be good for baseball, as he’s been for basketball.
Mark Cuban will buy a baseball team someday, and Cubs fans will forever rue that it was not the Cubs.

And the best might be the guy they got in the Greinke trade, Jake Odorizzi who is a righty. They have about 7 guys that look to be #2 or #3 starters in the majors. Understandable. I think if they do the one interleague series per trip though, there are ways to balance it out better. Cramming interleague into one month makes it hard to achieve balance.

Let’s say you two 3-game series each week in interleague play, which would be required with 15-team leagues. In ll reality, it’s probably an average of about 6.25 games per week, but we’ll use 6. 10 teams in league, not in division x 6 Games each (3H / 3A) = 60 Games
15 teams in the other league x 3 games each = 45 Games
(alternate home / away each season) i.e. Cubs go to Boston this year for 3 games, Boston come to Cubs next year for 3
1 Interleague rival that you always have a home and away series with each year adds 3 games
Total of 156 Games

I think a lot of fans are turned off by Cuban because he used to be so vocal in the past, and seems like a little kid, but I’ve always liked him because he’s so accessible and hands-on. The Dairy Queen episode was hilarious.

All he wants to do is win and make more money, so they can keep winning…and making more money. Losing teams can stay in the black, but they don’t make a ton of money. It doesn’t seem like Ricketts really gets that yet.

He’s new money for sure, but I like that. Why does he have to “act like an owner” for people to like him?
The DQ thing was a perfect illustration of him. Yes, he runs his mouth, but he doesn’t take himself too seriously to work a cash register for a day.
Oh wait, he was being self-aggrandizing…
Fuck you, Alvin.

I would think fans would like to see their team’s owner care at least as much as they. Or at least act like it.

So when he won Dancing With the Stars, did he donate that to charity? I forgot if he won or not but I heard he did okay.
I figure if you as an owner put yourself out there in that way, you cause people who don’t know you to google what you do, and then those people find out about your product (lots of playoffs, decent team, new NBA champions) and that’s pretty much another form of advertising. I don’t see anything wrong with that at all.
It’s really too bad he didn’t buy the Cubs, but I’m glad he was smart enough not to get into a bad deal.

He wants him to be a huge Cubs fan who roots for the team to win with as much passion as he has. He likes to hear Ricketts talk. He thinks it’s good that Ricketts walks all around the ballpark talking with fans. So on and so forth. Al wants Tom Ricketts to be Mark Cuban, but he doesn’t like Mark Cuban. (dying laughing)

The only difference is that Alvin thinks Cuban is doing it to get himself press.
Alvin: Candidate B > Candiate A because it’s not clear how badly it can be perceived that he wants to be on TV.

Also Buckhead is a very popular district. When I was pretty young, we went to the famous Buckhead Diner. I remember it being good but especially because of the sweet and sour calimari. Coca-Cola is HQed in Atlanta (they have a tour of the facility). About all I know.

A fun thing to do is to go around town always ordering a Pepsi, and when they ask if you would like Coke instead, tell them you can’t have Coke because you used to have a wicked drug problem and that you know they aren’t supposed to use cocaine in the formula anymore, but you can’t take that chance. Then start weeping and tell them how you love your family too much to start down that road again.
