1. Just so everybody knows:

Castro is a free-swinger, taking a cut at about 4% more pitches than league average, but he’s improved his pitch recognition from last season. In 2010, Castro was swinging at 32% of pitches outside the zone (3% worse than average), and this season he’s cut that down to 29.5%. While not a huge change, it’s a small step in the right direction and gives hope that Castro might learn to increase his low walk rate (3.6% BB%) going forward.

So, yeah, Castro owns life. 🙂

  6.
I know it’s early still but damn.
It’s starting to seem like last year wasn’t so much a down year and that perhaps we shouldn’t be expecting him to rebound much. I still think it’s too early for that, but he’s sucked for a long time now.

  13. The Cubs are tops in the majors in K/9 at 8.94, but 3rd worst in BB/9 at 3.99. Lots of Ks and lots of BBs would add up to a shitload of pitches thrown.

I’m not a fan of how mlb audio is automatically integrated into it. I’ve always used Yahoo to keep tabs on a game. Plus you get the in-gameday ads that are annoying. You can detach the audio but more clicks = annoying. IIRC it also doesn’t turn off the audio when you launch mlb.tv from it.

  40. The Nasty Factor evaluates several properties of each pitch, and rates the “nastiness” of the pitch on a scale from 0-100, based in part on the success or failure of opposing hitters against previous similar pitches. The Nasty Factor incorporates several different factors for each pitch, including: Velocity — The greater the pitch’s velocity — as compared to that pitcher’s and the league’s range of speed for that pitch type — the greater the nastiness; Sequence — The more the pitcher mixes up his pitches, the greater the nastiness… and certain pitch sequences are nastier than others, too; Location — The closer to the edges of the strike zone is, the greater the nastiness, while pitches closer to the middle of the plate, and farther away outside the strike zone, decrease in nastiness; Movement — The more movement the pitcher applies to the pitch — as compared to that pitcher’s and the league’s range of movement for that pitch type — the greater the nastiness. The Nasty Factor also adjusts for how often the pitcher has faced the current batter during the game, as well as how often he has used the same pitch type against the same batter in the current at-bat and previously in the game.

This is all I keep finding on Nasty Factor. I have not seen anywhere where they attach number to these.
