Fantasy Waiver Wire: Week 3

In Commentary And Analysis by GW

Previous editions are here. Decent players are starting to show up on waiver wires after slow starts. Now is the time to scoop them up. I’ll start with this week’s big callup, though.

Outfielders

George Springer

Unless your league has weekly transactions, it’s probably too late to pick up Springer. I do think he should be owned in all formats. While he will likely hurt your batting average, he has plenty of power and speed (37 HR, 45 SB combined last year in AA/AAA).

Kole Calhoun

The ankle injury sounds pretty bad, but if you have a DL slot, I think he’s an ideal stash.

Lucas Duda

Ike Davis was shipped off to Pittsburgh, meaning Duda inherits regular PA’s.

Colby Rasmus

His ownership percentage has dropped after a slow start, but I don’t see any reason to think things have changed. Someone who strikes out as much as Rasmus shouldn’t be expected to help in batting average the way he did last year, but the 20-25 homer-power is still there.

Will Venable

Another player who has been cut in many leagues, there’s at least some justification with Venable, since he’s only occasionally hitting at the top of the order now. Oh yeah, and his peripherals are horrific. Still, he’s a good bet for 15 homers and 20 steals, and that’s not easy to find. Would anyone be surprised if George Springer ended up at that level?

Starting Pitchers

Drew Hutchison

Still largely unowned, despite my recommendation two weeks ago. I find that hard to believe, given the tens of people who read these articles. He won’t be around for much longer, though, so pick him up.

Robbie Erlin

Once upon a time, Erlin was shooting through the Pads’ minor league system while posting great numbers along the way. He hurt his elbow in 2012, however, and his numbers in 2013 were disappointing. His peripherals have been good so far this year, today’s outing notwithstanding, and he’s worth a flier based on his home park alone.

Josh Beckett

Seems to have recovered, velocity is up, plays for a good team in a good park….

Closers

Carlos Torres, Gonzalez Germen

Jose Valverde has predictably gotten the boot in New York. I don’t want to be a Kyle Farnsworth owner, however, as I think his peak is long since past. I recommended Torres a few weeks ago, and he appears to have transitioned into a late-inning role. I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets the nod if and when Farns gets replaced, though Germen has been pretty good, as well. Keep an eye on Joel Hanrahan, as he’s rumored to be close to joining a team.
