Farewell to Bote…

In News And Rumors by Rice Cube46 Comments

There’s the usual thing about waiving and optioning to Iowa and trades and stuff, but since the trade deadline has passed and we are talking about David Bote, we can be fairly confident that this is the last we will see of our one-time legend in Cubs pinstripes for a while.

Per various sources (including the posts in the previous thread of comments), Luis Vázquez is going to be called up to replace Bote on the roster, while the open spot with the DFA will go to a claim for a pitcher from the Arizona Diamondbacks, Gavin Hollowell, who’s a pretty big boy with strikeout potential.

It kind of sucks for Bote, who gained his moment of Cubs fame with that ultimate grand slam and generally did his time in Iowa after that. He got one final shot with the Cubs this summer, and unfortunately he barely played, and when he did play, he couldn’t work enough magic to justify more playing time. At least he made his money and can either go back to Iowa (I feel that’s unlikely) or try to latch on with another team to play for his next job.

Fare thee well, Bote, and we will always have Wrigley.

Sometimes I feel like I’m the only Cubs fan out there who wishes that Bote got more playing time than he did (dying laughing)

I know they’re not facing Cy Young or any of his award recipients, but the possibility of Amaya and PCA emerging as legit offensive contributors is a really big deal, especially looking forward to next season.

In second place and the options of going over or under .500 when the 3rd wildcard spot sits at 11 over makes this game against the second-worst team in baseball an absolute must win.

Also, the Mets are kinda the lynchpin in the wildcard race. They have 3 against the Diamondbacks, one more against the Padres, 7 against the Phillies, and 3 against Atlanta. The Braves schedule is divided fairly evenly between really good and really terrible teams. The Diamondbacks look to have the toughest remaining schedule, as they have a grand total of 5 games remaining against teams under .500.

It’s also pretty fun that 5 NL teams have a super legit shot at a first-round bye, separated by just 4.5 games with a month-plus left. The West is still wide open.

This seems a good in-game interview actually, especially since he’s not actually playing defense at the moment
