Garza Wants $10.225M, Cubs Offering $7.95M

In News And Rumors by aisle42484 Comments

Suddenly this afternoon, Jon Heyman’s Twitter feed was full of figures reflecting various arbitration-eligible players’ salary requests and their teams’ starting offers.

The teams will have until sometime in early to mid-February to come to agreements and avoid the actual arbitration hearing.  The arbitration cases can take place anywhere from February 1 to February 21 and a settlement can be agreed upon at any time before the hearing starts. Once the hearing starts, the arbitrators decide if the player gets the full amount he desires, or only the amount the team has offered. There is no middle ground once the arbitration case begins.

So let the negotiating begin!

Right now, the only figures relating to the Cubs are those of Matt Garza.  He submitted a salary of $10.225 million and the Cubs submitted a figure of $7.95 million.  That’s is not terribly far apart, so I expect something will get done.

In years’ past, we knew Hendry hated going to arbitration with players, and to the best of my memory only did so with Ryan Theriot.  At this point, I have no idea what the histories of Theo or Hoyer are in regards to arbitration hearings for their players.  I’ll have to look into that.

What makes me confident is that Clayton Kershaw submitted a figure of $10 million and the Dodgers submitted $6.5 million. Now, I love Matt Garza’s abilities, but he is no Clayton Kershaw and the best Kershaw can do is less than Garza’s request.

Here are the rest of Heyman’s tweets as of this writing:

UPDATE:

Carrie Muskat tweets many arb-eligible Cubs have agreed to terms:

DeWitt signed for $1.1 million; Soto $4.3 million; Stewart $2.237 mill; Baker $1.375 mill; Wells $2.705; Volstad $2.655 million.

    So. Fucking. Good. http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2012/1/13/2702190/tim-tebow-nfl-playoffs-2012-denver-broncos-haters-gonna-hate

Then you realize… Maybe he’s not a good quarterback, maybe he was never really an underdog, and maybe his faith has nothing to do with humility, but we’ve spent so much time injecting all this meaning into Tim Tebow that this week he finally began to mean something. Only instead of an icon to hard work and humility or a football player that’s fun to watch play football, for a week at least, he’s the walking, kneeling reminder of just how completely f’ing insane America can be sometimes.

Read about the house of fucking lies Tebow’s “underdog” story is built on and tell me again how he’ s a good guy.

Garza is going to get expensive, quickly. I’d be surprised if he isn’t dealt by the end of ST.

Kershaw is first year is arbitration eligible whereas this is Garza’s 3rd trip through. If Kershaw was up for his 3rd time those figures would be double what they are.

My guess is the Cubs and Garza split the difference and he gets roughly $9 million. The Cubs don’t want this to go to arbitration because if Garza wins then his salary in 2013 would be increased as well.

I’ll have a rundown of these signings sometime tomorrow. Is Garza the only arb eligible player to not sign?

The auto-renewals are either renewed or not. They make an insignificant amount of money that it’s not worth much consideration to be honest.

I dunno, MO. I don’t see it. Most of that article seems a response to the coverage of Tebow, which, admittedly, is probably grating if one gives a shit; I don’t. It’s not like tebow is a singular interruption in espn’s otherwise heady lineup. TV sports coverage almost uniformly consists of bloviating gasbags searching for content.

I’ve not seen that “frs health energy” commercial before (nor have i even heard of that brand), and it’s clearly overly dramatic, but it’s not like Tebow wrote the copy. If he agrees with every word (a possibility), it just makes him delusional, which would place him in the company of just about every other highly paid athlete in the country. I certainly wouldn’t characterize it as a house of lies. Moreover, if an NFL quarterback who can’t pass isn’t an underdog, then I don’t know who is.

I’ll post more tomorrow, but using 40/60/80 for arb values and the CAIRO projections, here’s what I get for the ones who signed a contract today:

    Player PA/IP WAR $$$
    DeWitt 327 1.1 3.3
    Soto 399 2.3 6.9
    Stewart 338 1 3
    Baker 228 0.7 2.1
    Wells 119 1.2 2.4

I think at this point it’s best to rid ourselves of Soto and Garza. The Sawx could really use a decent catcher. I wonder if we could get a bunch of guys for both?

Wellington Castillo is about ready to take over in the ML anyway. Garza and Soto are close to the end of the ‘peak years’. Wells is cooked and DeWitt and Baker are platoons/back-ups. Why bother?

Just finished the 1st season of Treme, I’m really hooked. A bit more high-context (you have to have visited New Orleans a few times/know some stuff about it to get everything that’s going on), and more character focused with several plot-lines, but I’m eager to watch season 2 to see where it goes. David Simon just writes damn good television.

I just think it’s hilarious. There are two things that beat writers are useful for. The first is their access to the players. Only Carrie Muskat does a decent job at that and I think she does a really good job. The other thing is inside information they can pass along and all of them have sucked at that for a very long time. Now they have none.
