He got the most money he could (with our remaining allotted $) and we got our 1st round pick. Glad to see both sides come to an agreement.
I don’t. Brett said the guy didn’t go into details, so I find it very plausible that they offered more money at less per annum. Would that really surprise anyone? Clearly the FO decided to dig a money pit in Cuba and kidnap everyone who fell in it.
Keith was certain last night that the CBA would be tweaked after this draft, because so many #1 picks were still unsigned. I tend to think the agents are just holding out until the lower order picks sign, so they can claim every single loose penny the teams have.
I know it’s fashionable to trash the All-Star Game (especially in these parts), but I decided to give it a try in 2010 for the first time in many years, and I was surprised to find I enjoyed it quite a bit. Marlon Byrd’s contributions actually made me temporarily proud to be a Cub fan. I’ll be watching it this year, at least in part. There’s no other game going on for four days, I’ll see good players I rarely see, and (who knows?) the game just might surprise me like it did in 2010.
I’m enjoying all of the ZOMG AL Team X is playing its next 40 games against teams with .500 or better records!!! …when only three AL teams have a losing record
I’m enjoying all of the ZOMG AL Team X is playing its next 40 games against teams with .500 or better records!!! …when only three AL teams have a losing record
Not only did I do a double-take, I’ll confess I was all, “Dude, there’s no way that’s true,” in my head. So I had to look.
@ Brett:
By contrast, half the NL teams have a losing record. I guess interleague has a lot to do with that, plus Minnesota and Seattle are pretty terrible.
@ Rice Cube:
The entire league’s record is .513. Also, there are 3 teams at .500, a few teams just above .500, and now teams slightly below .500 (though no teams quite so bad as the worst 4 teams in the NL, interestingly). It is a really odd set of circumstances.
@ Rizzo the Rat:
I hate all the theatrics and the lineup changes every other inning. It’s stimulus overdose to me. To me, half the fun of baseball is seeing if your favorite player X can get a hit after two hard lineouts earlier in the game. Without those mini tensions, it’s just dudes I wouldn’t want to hang out with running around in the grass.
@ Rizzo the Rat:
I’m not that good at math anymore but I think it has to do with teams playing a different number of games (due to off days and rainouts that have yet to be made up) plus unbalanced schedules allowing one set of teams to beat up on the NL’s crap and the Twins and Mariners so far.
@ EnricoPallazzo:
To get to finals, they add the 1st two round totals.
Side note, apparently Jamie Moyer and Casey Coleman were asked to be HR Derby pitchers but declined. No telling who would have won if they did pitch for whoever asked for them.
right but they both had 13 homers apiece from rounds 1 and 2. trumbo had 7 then 6 and bautista had 11 then 2. i would have assumed that round 2 would be the tiebreaker, not round 1.

Does that mean we signed all of our top 10 picks?

Cubs 22k away from losing a pick. Good job on spending right up to the limit.

Yeah, it’s not hard to believe. Did he sign for something like 7/42? Cubs could have offered 8/43 and that’s technically more money.

Cubs do have to pay the 75 % tax on the overage for this years draft.

There might have been some opt-out option for him in their deal and not in the Cubs’ deal, too. Something other than straight cash.

Any word on where the Cubs are sending Almora? I assume he needs to get back into playing condition so a few weeks in Mesa and then what?

I bet he stays in AZL then does the Fall League. If they really love him maybe Peoria?

The Fall League is usually for guys at AA or AAA. I think teams can only have 1 or 2 guys below that.

well Boise has Trey Martin & Dunston. Peoria could be a fit but I just think he spends the rest of the year with AZL
