Bruce Levine is reporting the Cubs have fired Jim Hendry.
The Chicago Cubs relieved Jim Hendry of his duties as vice president and general manager on Friday, according to a source familiar with the situation.
Another positive step in the right direction. Mike Quade just lost his job, too, but he hasn’t been informed yet. No way a new GM keeps him around.
UPDATES: Randy Bush is the new GM, which I’m assuming is on an interim basis.
Hendry admitted he was fired on July 22nd, but stuck around to see to it that the draft picks were signed. Had the authority to make trades, but felt the next GM should do that.

because this is the cubs md. we will half ass firing the GM just like everything else
dylanjQuote Reply
The bottom line is that these decisions with regards to who stays and goes are going to be left to the new GM. You won’t find but the most desperate person if you hire someone and force him to use their people. In fact, Jim Hendry is at the top of that list since he’s been fired. If Ricketts is going to do that, Jim Hendry is hired as GM this offseason. I highly doubt Ricketts is that stupid and will let the GM make those decisions. Make the GM keeps Wilken, but I’m guessing Wilken resigns before that’s an option.
mb21Quote Reply
because this is the cubs md. we will half ass firing the GM just like everything else
It’s funny that I’m now one of the more optimistic people with regards to this. I don’t know they’ll hire, but Ricketts is a businessman and he knows if he’s hiring someone to basically run it, they’re going to want their own people. To me, firing Hendry is accepting of that. I just don’t see Hendry being fired if there were other coaches or scouts the club wanted to keep. Those are Hendry’s guys. I’m not even sure why anybody would want one of his guys to stick around anyway?

They could have had Colvin for much less, but since he was a first rounder that wasn’t possible. I agree there are other things to consider. It’s not all his fault and I’d never say it was, but even with the money the Cubs spent, or lack thereof, the Cubs farm system should be better. How many more years do we have to wait until we can evaluate Wilken? Does he really need a decade as the scouting director for that?

Done deal sealed
And after one year as GM, the Rays replaced Wilken and have built what has been the best overall farm system in baseball since. Maybe it’s nothing, but it’s not unreasonable to think one or the other didn’t want to work with the other. Friedman is obviously a saber GM and Wilken isn’t anything like that. The advantage to hiring someone like Ryno is that you have more control. It’s the same reason the Rays want a guy like Joe Maddon. They can tell him to wash dishes, change diapers and he’ll do it. To me, that’s the kind of manager that Friedman is going to want. Basically, the same type of manager that Billy Beane and Theo Epstein want. They want someone they can tell to do whatever they want and they’ll behave like good little children. In other words, if Sandberg wants his dream job, he’s going to do it Friedman’s way. No reason to believe he can’t.
I don’t disagree with that, but the Cubs gave Simpson a million bucks when they could have had him several rounds later for $150,000 at the most.
Jim Hendry got fired because the Cubs suck. How does Tim Wilken keep his job when the Cubs minor league system sucks?
Huh? How does the Cubs minor league system suck? We just traded away 3 staples to our farm and are still a top 15 system. By all accounts, we just had a great draft. Before this Wilken’s budget was limited. We have graduated a lot of players in recent years.
Sure we didn’t have any true impact players other than Castro, but we have good cost controlled players at the big league level. Combine that with an above average farm that never had a big budget on the draft or internationally, IDK how you can say Wilken sucks.
For fucks sake, we were trying to “tap” into the Korean market before everyone else. Like there was equal or better talent there than Latin America. I know Wilken doesn’t deal with International stuff, but it still shows how limited our budget was for developing and taking top talent.

Basically, close to 80% of RBI are with 1 or 2 outs. It seems close to evenly split between those 2 with 1 out at about 20%. If you wanted to use round numbers 20, 40, 40 would be good enough.

So Pena’s 33% RBI on 2 outs is less than you’d expect, but that may be becuase teams are more likely to walk him with 2 outs. Not sure if that’s true, but it’s just a thought.

I wonder what occured on July 22nd that forced Rucketts to tell him he was done. I also find it interesting that Ricketts said he is going to seek advice from others in baseball about how he should move forward. That’s a stark contrast to not wanting a baseball guy to watch his baseball guy remarks. It’s also two years too late. Ricketts should have been ready to have his own baseball guy in place from day one. He had two years during the buying process to consult baseball people and figure shit out. I’m hoping Ricketts finally gets it right but I’m not holding my breath.
