I don’t think it’s clear, yet. I think they are working the phones and pushing hard for the best offer. That’s why we’ve heard these stories the past few days about 6-8 teams involved, 10 teams interested, and so forth… I just think there’s something to be said for having the reputation for being easy to deal with. That’s one of the things I always felt was under appreciated about hendry. I think Beane is that way too, despite being portrayed as this shrewd genius in moneyball.

Considering the Dodgers were seen as the most likely team to match up with the Cubs for Dempster, I wonder what other teams are going to be offering. The Red Sox apparently don’t even think Garza is much of an improvement though that’s probably just posturing. Factor in the inability for the team who trades for him to acquire draft picks and it’s definitely going to reduce the amount the Cubs would have gotten this time last year.

Also, it sounds like Dempster may have some terms to accept a trade to certain places. He said something like it’s cool being the hammer instead of the nail after his start last night. So this isn’t the easiest deal to get done since, A) he’s way over his projections causing the Cubs to ask for more than they probably normally would, B) other teams knowing perfectly well what his true talent is based on his previous stats in just about every year of his career and have a limit to what they’ll part with, C) the Cubs probably get compensation if they don’t trade him and he walks, D) the team getting him would not get a pick if he walks after this season.
This is why I have stayed pretty resolute in my opinion that he doesn’t get moved. I had a moment of weakness yesterday on WTF because I thought Casey Coleman’s presence actually meant a deal was imminent, but otherwise I’ve never thought the odds of him getting traded was higher than 50/50.
