I don't even think Joe is terrible, but I can't stand him in center.

All right, I uploaded a revised version. Refresh to see it. Sorry about the dumb typos. I exported the revision incorrectly and didn’t notice. I was pretty tired when I did this.

I’m on my way to The Cheesecake Factory and I hate everything about that place except the cheesecake. Love cheesecake. But this happens when you let other people make lunch plans. (dying laughing)

Holy hell, Mike Trout leads the league in WAR (either version). Not bad for being called up after the season began.

i respect what thoyer is trying to do, maximizing return and all, but some part of me wonders if a guy like luhnow isn’t better at this stuff. he seems like he’s pretty easy to trade with while at the same time being decent at player evaluation.

I’m waiting to see what return the Cubs get, but I do think it’s become clear the cubs aren’t getting much for Dempster as we figured. Garza? Don’t know yet

I don’t think it’s clear, yet. I think they are working the phones and pushing hard for the best offer. That’s why we’ve heard these stories the past few days about 6-8 teams involved, 10 teams interested, and so forth… I just think there’s something to be said for having the reputation for being easy to deal with. That’s one of the things I always felt was under appreciated about hendry. I think Beane is that way too, despite being portrayed as this shrewd genius in moneyball.

Maybe not, but it’s at least clear the Dodgers weren’t interested in parting with prospects for Dempster. I expect we’ll begin to hear rumors about Garza and the Dodgers. Considering the Dodgers were seen as the most likely team to match up with the Cubs for Dempster, I wonder what other teams are going to be offering. The Red Sox apparently don’t even think Garza is much of an improvement though that’s probably just posturing. Factor in the inability for the team who trades for him to acquire draft picks and it’s definitely going to reduce the amount the Cubs would have gotten this time last year.

I got some New Belgium Trippel over last weekend. It was good, but really upset my stomach. Tried Ommegang’s Rare Vos yesterday. I liked Hennepin better.

I don’t know, I just think they don’t see the advantage in trading Demp just to trade him. Yeah, they could call up and get an easy deal done and help their rep, but if the team is in a better position holding him and offering arb and all that, I’d rather they do what’s best for the team.

Also, it sounds like Dempster may have some terms to accept a trade to certain places. He said something like it’s cool being the hammer instead of the nail after his start last night. So this isn’t the easiest deal to get done since, A) he’s way over his projections causing the Cubs to ask for more than they probably normally would, B) other teams knowing perfectly well what his true talent is based on his previous stats in just about every year of his career and have a limit to what they’ll part with, C) the Cubs probably get compensation if they don’t trade him and he walks, D) the team getting him would not get a pick if he walks after this season.

This is why I have stayed pretty resolute in my opinion that he doesn’t get moved. I had a moment of weakness yesterday on WTF because I thought Casey Coleman’s presence actually meant a deal was imminent, but otherwise I’ve never thought the odds of him getting traded was higher than 50/50.

I was with you until a few days ago. I do think he gets moved, but I’m not confident in that. I think you nailed it when you pointed out he’s way above his projections and it’s probably causing the Cubs to ask for more than any team is willing to give up. I think the front office made the same mistake with Garza in the offseason. I’m starting to think this front office might be a rather difficult team to trade with, but I don’t know. From what little we’ve seen so far it has seemed the Cubs have overvalued their players. It now seems there are only 3 teams interested in Dempster and the Cardinals are one and reportedly won’t part with top prospects for a rental. There have been rumors the Braves are the same way, which leaves the Nationals. They could really really use Dempster because they’ll have to shut Stras down eventually. I think that’s the Cubs best hope for a decent return on either Garza or Dempster.

    @ mb21:

I think they think they can get a top prospect with the comp pick for Dempster, so their price isn’t likely to come down from wanting a top prospect. Maybe some team blinks and gives them that for a rental, but I doubted it heavily before and I still doubt it. They have no incentive to move him for less than they feel he is worth. He’s pitching well, he’s not blocking anybody, and everybody loves him.

Now, whether they are correct in their valuation of him and their ability to find a top prospect with a comp pick is a different story, but I think that’s what they think.

Yeah, it’s like you said the other day, they’re more than confident in their ability to draft and develop talent so I would imagine that’s a factor. I’m not as certain they’re going to find a top prospect at that spot with the new rules as they may have in the past though.

That’s true, but I think they are confident they can. If nothing else, that’s how they are going to act until they get someone to blink. They can always accept a lesser deal at the deadline if this is just posturing.

Probably. He was flexing his wrist in the dugout while talking to Bosio. He fell on it while doing his normal bumbling around the infield on the sacrifice double play last inning.

Z walked 6 before being pulled after 3.1 innings. His K/BB is now 79/63. What happened to that transformation he was supposed to have undergone?
