Iowa Cubs 4 @ Omaha Storm Chasers 5
Another day, another walk for Logan Watkins. He went 1-4 with a walk and a strikeout. Brett Jackson II: The Adventure of Stink went 0-4 with 2 strikeouts and a walk. Bed Intruder went 1-5 with an RBI double. He'd also score a run and walk once. Ryan Sweeney continues to push the issue with a 2-5 performance. He had a HR and 2 RBI and a strikeout. He's now hitting .404/.452/.772. Send Sappelt down and call this dude up already. Brian Bogusevic went 3-4 with a run scored. The only other notable offensive performance was Brad Nelson's pinch hit 2-run homer to tie the game with 1 out in the top of the ninth. The Cubs walked twice and struck out 7 times.
Chris Rusin drew the start and had a line of 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO, and 1 HR. He just doesn't have the stuff to start in the majors; it's pretty evident. I'd be surprised if he could ever reach 6.5 K/9 at the major league level. Hisanori Takahashi gave up a solo shot in the 7th (his only baserunner) to former prospect Brandon Wood. Blake Parker allowed one in 2 innings, and Zach Putnam got the loss by allowing a single run in the bottom of the 10th.
Former Cub Xavier Nady went 0-3 for the Omaha Storm Chasers with a walk. Phantasmal Cub Max Ramirez went 1-4 with a solo HR. Chad Tracy went 1-3 with a walk. All in all, the Omaha 4-6 lineup was just discarded Cubs. They STILL beat the Iowa Cubs.
Pensacola Blue Wahoos 3 @ Tennessee Smokies 5
Matt Szczur drew a walk and struckout once. He also had a single in a 1-4 performance. Repeat everything I said about Matt for Ronald Torreyes, except remove the strikeout. I've been looking at Torreyes a lot ever since dmick's Prospect Profile, and I think I may have underestimated him earlier. I hate his lack of power (in general) and his lack of speed (from a guy his size), but there's something to be said about passing leagues while continually being among the youngest player on your team. I don't think he'll ever start in the majors, but there are plenty of chances for a guy like him to be a utility infielder if things break decently. He's also a great PH option because you can be sure he's putting the ball in play.
Arismendy Alcantara had a quiet game, going 0-4 without a walk or K. Jae-Hoon Ha went 2-3 with a walk. Every time he reached base, he scored. Rubi Silva is playing his way back into prospectdom with another 2-4 performance, this time with a triple and a home run. He had 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. Christian Villanueva continues to struggle, going 0-3 with a walk and strikeout. As a team, the Smokies walked 6 times and struck out only thrice. That's great numbers.
Alberto Cabrera took the mound and went 6 strong innings. He allowed 3 hits and 3 walks, striking out 6. The result was a single earned run. Kevin Rhoderick allowed 3 baserunners in 0.2 innings for 1 ER, and A.J. Morris allowed the last run in an inning of nondescript work. Trey McNutt got a 4-out save, allowing a hit and getting a strikeout. His ERA on the season is a "sparkling" 5.06; he's had 6 good outings and 2 really poor ones.
Lakeland Flying Tigers 3 @ Daytona Cubs 7
Zeke DeVoss continues to do his Logan Watkins impression with a 1-3, 2 BB performance. He also struck out once and scored a run. He also had an error. Javier Baez continues to climb back up to respectability with a 2-4, 2 RBI performance. He struck out once, had a double, and scored a run. His line on the year is now .250/.274/.489. The FSL is a pitcher's league, so that's good for a .333 wOBA and a 108 wRC+. Of course, he also had 2 errors (7 on the year) Jorge Soler had a strikeout and a hit with a run scored (1-4). John Andreoli continues to have strong year, going 0-2 with a piar of walks and an RBI. He also K'ed once. Dustin Geiger had 3 RBI, going 2-4 on the day. As a team, the Cubs walked 4 times and struck out 8.
Ben Wells had a passable start. His line: 5.2 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 1 SO. Kinda funky and BABIP lucky. Eduardo Figueroa went 0.2 IP and allowed 3 baserunners. Luck shined on him, though, and he allowed no runs except the one he inherited from Wells. Hunter Cervenka inherited two runners from Figueroa but stranded them both; he walked 3, struck out 4, and didn't allow any hits. For a Red Sox throw-in (Marlon Byrd deal), Cervenka has surprisingly done enough to hang on with the Cubs. He needs to work on his control, but so does every other minor league pitcher. It was Cervenka's second save.
Kane County Cougars @ Fort Wayne Tin Caps
Defensively, this game was utter dogshit. Every infielder except the catcher/pitcher had at least one error. That's fucking hard to do. Gioskar Amaya went 1-5 with an RBI and a strikeout. He also had a fielding error. Dan Vogelbach had a quiet game, going 0-5 with no BB or SO. He had a fielding error. Jeimer Candelario went 0-4 with a walk and 3 strikeouts. He had two throwing errors. Marco Hernandez had 3 SO en route to an 0-5 performance. He had a throwing error. Your star infield, ladies and gentlemen: 1-19, 7 SO, 1 BB, 2 RBI, 5 Errors.
Not everyone was a complete shitstain. Rock Shoulders had a run scored and an RBI. He also struckout and walked once and had a double (1-3). Luke Blaize of Bleacher Nation really likes this guy. That's good to hear, I value his input. Oliver Zapata had a good game, going 2-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Yaniel Cabezas also had a good one, going 3-4 with a run scored and a run batted in. As a team, the Cougars walked 3 times and struck out 9.
Pierce Johnson went 5.2 innings of solid baseball. He did allow 7 baserunners (5 H, 2 BB), but his defense did him no favors. He limited the damage to a single unearned run on the back of 7 SO. Jeffry Antigua went 2.1 innings in relief, allowing no runs on 2 H and 3 SO. Nathan Dorris shat the bed. He recorded a single out, walked 1, allowed 3 hits and 4 runs (2 earned). I'm sure the defense is mostly to blame but it still happened. Eddie Orozco was pretty bad also. He only allowed a single run, but it was on the back of 3 hits and 2 walks over 1.1 innings. When you allow more baserunners than outs recorded, it's a Bad Day.
The Cubs did face a real prospect in SP Max Fried. He was on the same high school team (Harvard-Westlake) as fellow prospect Lucas Giolito, and went 7th overall last year. All told, they did well against him, tagging him for 3 runs on 6 H and 2 BB in 6 innings.

It’s too bad the Cubs moved Cabrera to the bullpen last year. He lost a year of development as a starter and so far has been pretty decent. He’s not ever going to be a star, but he might be able to fill out the end of a rotation.

Round Rock has a ton of former Cubs too. They had Jim Adduci batting third in both of the games I went to (dying laughing). They’ve also got Randy Wells, Neal Cotts, and Robinson Chirinos. I think I saw two or three more in the media guide who aren’t on the roster now too.
