Logan Watkins had a very un-Watkins like day. He went 1-4 with no walks or strikeouts. He was also hit by a pitch and had his 3rd error. Brett Jackson 2: Revenge of the Fallen Prospect Status went 2-5 with a double and 2 RBI. He also struck out once, for old times sake. Josh Vitters went 1-5 with a double and 2 strikeouts. He's almost certainly the option should Valbuena go on the 15-day DL. The X-rays on Valbuena's pinkie were negative, so it looks like he'll only miss a day or two. Dave Sappelt went 2-4 with a 2-R homer. It's worth noting that all of these performances were against Tyler Skaggs, a very, very nice prospect (#12 in baseball). That's very encouraging; Skaggs has one of the best 5 or so curveballs in baseball according to some scouting reports. Ian Stewart (who gives a shit) went 0-3 with a walk and 2 strikeouts. He's good for a .082 batting average on the year. J.C. Boscan went 2-4 with a double. His line this year is a very nice .338/.403/.412; he's played very well this year but he's still a 33-year old replacement-level player.
Guillermo Moscoso continues to impress with a 7 IP, 0 ER performance. He allowed an unearned run over 6 hits and a walk; he also struck out a batter per inning. Zach Putnam got the hold and Blake Parker pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the save, his 5th of the year.
Birmingham Barons 4 @ Tennessee Smokies 5
Matt Szczur went 2-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBI. He also stole 2 bases. Ronald Torreyes had a double and a walk in 4 plate appearances. Arismendy Alcantara went 1-3 with an RBI. Ty Wright had a nice game, going 2-3 with a double and a walk. Rubi Silva had a rough night, going 0-4 with a K. Christian Villanueva had a really nice night, going 3-4 with 2 doubles and an RBI. Rafael Lopez went 1-4 with a double. All in all, the Smokies had 5 doubles.
Matt Garza started the game and went 3.1 innings. He walked 2, allowed 3 hits, and struck out 2. He allowed no runs. Matt Loosen got the start and has bad as usual. He went 4 innings and allowed 3 runs, with 4 walks, 2 hits, 6 strikeouts (less impressive when you face so many batters) and a home run. His ERA is now a sterling 8.04. Marcus Hatley picked up his first save of the year.
Dunedin and Daytona had the first game of their DH cancelled due to rain, and the second game postponed.
Kane County Cougars 7 @ Clinton Lumber Kings 4
Pin-Chieh Chen went 2-5 with a double. Gioskar Amaya only went 1-5, but he had 2 RBI (and 2 SO). Dan Vogelbach went 1-4 with a double and a walk, also scoring a run. Jeimer Candelario went 1-5 with a run. He also follows me on twitter. Rock Shoulders went 0-4 with a walk and two strikeouts. If only he followed me on twitter, he might have done better. Willson Contreras brought the lumber yesterday. He went 3-5 with a double and a home run, with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Both David Bote and Oliver Zapata had no hits and drew 2 walks; Zapata would score both times. The Cougars walked 7 times and struck out 4; that's awesome.
Michael Heesch had a meh start, surrendering 4 runs over 6 innings. He struck out none and walked one, allowing 12 hits. What a weird line. Brian Smith threw 3 scoreless innings for the save. He allowed 2 hits and fanned 3.

Is Reno, like with Albuquerque, Vegas and Colorado Springs, also a fun hitters’ environment?

You forgot the most important thing from last night. Javier Baez didn’t make an error. He’s now gone 2 days without an errors. Another day and it’s an errorless streak. Here’s to hoping today’s game or games get rained out!

I wouldn’t be surprised if Logan Watkins got the call up before Vitters. Viters hasn’t done anything that would be deserving of getting promoted after his shitty time at MLB last year. And so far a shitty start to this year at Iowa. Watkins batting average is only .246, but his OBP is .390 and he’s slugging .421. I’d guess that Cody Ransom (dying laughing) would take over at 3rd base if Valbuena goes to the DL.
I think the only reason they’d call Vitters up is if they’ve lost all hope he can be an MLB starter, which I actually wonder if they haven’t already.

Then again, I don’t think the I-Cubs scored all that many runs in Colorado Springs. Which is weird because that place is supposed to be a launchpad.

I have no idea how the Cubs will fare this afternoon, but they are already down 1-0 to the Nationals. If past performance is an indication of future results, then let me change the subject.
Happy 43rd anniversary of Ernie Banks’ 500th Home Run. It was a solo shot against the Atlanta Braves’ Pat Jarvis. Bottom of the 2nd, to bring the score to 2-1 Braves. The Braves would go up 3-1 before Banks hit a sac fly. In the bottom of the 9th, Billy Williams hit a game-tying HR and Santo drove in the winner in the 11th. A good day for the Cubs. A good day for Cubs History. Here’s to you, Ernie. Let’s (pick a different year and) play two.

Dude, it’s Mother’s Day. I hope you’re out celebrating with your mothers and the mothers of your chilluns instead of blogging about the Cubs. I’m just here because my wife has to work (dying laughing)
And now she’s home and we’re trying to figure out what to eat 😀

My mom was so good this year we cut Mother’s Day short.

I watched the entire game. It was a decent game, kind of slow. Cool ending. A good win for the Cubs, although they probably should have scored more given how many hits they had. I would comic about it but my hands are all fucked up.

seems like a pretty good bet. 7/41 shouldn’t be to hard to get out from under if he turns into james loney, and two team options tacked on the end could be nice if he ends up better.
