Brett Jackson 2: The Second Part of the Tragedy went 0-4 with a walk. Logan Watkins had a single, a walk, a strikeout, and a run. Dave Sappelt hit cleanup, and went 0-3 with a walk and a run scored. Josh Vitters had a single and a run scored. He also had an RBI. Donnie Murphy had the best day, going 2-4 with a double and a 3-run bomb in the 6th inning. The Cubs only had 7 hits, but went 3-6 with RISP and walked 4 times to 4 strikeouts. A nice win.
Nick Struck continues to struggle this season. He allowed 4 runs in 6 innings off of 11 hits, a walk, 4 strikeouts, and a home run. Esmailin Caridad locked down the 7th and 8th, and Zach Putnam grabbed his second save of the year.
Tennessee Smokies 6 @ Jackson Generals 4
Matt Szczur went 2-5 with a double and an RBI (he also struck out once). He also stole a base, so a productive day. Ronald Torreyes went 0-4, but he did have an RBI. Arismendy Alcantara probably needs a day off; he went 0-4 with 3 SO and an error. Ty Wright played DH and went 1-3 with a walk and strikeout. Rafael Lopez had a good day, with a 2-4, double, HR performance. His blast was a solo shot. Exactly everything I said about Lopez, repeat for Rubi Silva. Silva really, really needs to work on his plate discipline, but the power is definitely there. Christian Villanueva keeps plugging away, going 1-4 with a strikeout. Anthony Giansanti continues to impress after his promotion to Tennessee, going 2-4 with a double and a run scored and RBI. He also struck out twice, and had his first error. Tim Torres went 1-4 with a double and 2 runs scored. He also stole a base. The Smokies only walked once and struck out 10 times, but going 5-10 with RISP solves all of those problems.
Dallas Beeler had a quality start (6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO). He needs to strike out more dudes to get promoted. Tony Zych struggled in his single inning, allowing 2 hits, 2 walks, a strikeout, and an unearned run. Trey McNutt faced 5 batters in his inning and none of them made contact with the ball. Kevin Rhoderick threw a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save.
Charlotte Stone Crabs 3 @ Daytona Cubs 0
This sucked. Only 3 Cubs got a hit and only 4 reached base. Zeke DeVoss went 2-4, Ben Carhart went 2-4, Chadd Krist went 1-3 with a walk, and Jorge Soler went 0-3 with a walk and a strikeout and a stolen base. Everyone else went 0-fer with a shitload of strikeouts (11 today). At least there were no errors and 4 double plays.
Zach Cates got tagged hard (6 IP, 11 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO). Frank Del Valle, Luis Liria, and David Cales all pitched very well in relief though. Small victories?
Kane County Cougars 0 @ Clinton LumberKings
The top of the order was actually decent here. Pin-Chieh Chen went 1-4 to leadoff. Gioskar Amaya and Dan Vogelbach both went 2-4 with no XBH, SO, or BB. Amaya also stole a base. Jeimer Candelario went 1-4 with a double, as did Yaniel Cabezas. David Bote had 2 walks and went 0-2 (also an error). Rock Shoulders celebrated his Prospect Watch inclusion with an 0-3, BB job.
Pierce Johnson gave up a 2-R HR for the bulk of his damage. He went 6, with 7 H, 4 R (3 ER), 1 BB, 6 SO, and 1 HR. Jeffry Antigua dominated in 2 innings, with no baserunners allowed and 5 strikeouts. The LumberKings went 3-10 with RISP.
Bonus!
You've basically never heard of these guys.

Anyone have any objections to Cubs going with Kris Bryant?
I prefer one of the pitchers, but if her really does have 80 power i might prefer him
bubblesdachimpQuote Reply
I don’t care who they draft as long as they think it’s the best player available. If that’s the Appel, or Gray, or Bryant, of Manaea, or whoever, just draft good players.
MylesQuote Reply
I’m starting to like Bryant and Gray over Appel. It just seems like Appel is a surefire #2 pitcher and ig I’m picking in the top 5, I want an potential ace or perennial all-star. Gray has more to prove but the stuff is that of an ace. Meanwhile, Bryant could start in A+ or AA right away and impact the team in as little as next year or the following year. He also comes with less risk.
I’m leaning Gray right now, because we still haven’t had a breakout pitcher that projects as a TORP in the system. As much as we would like to stay with position players and hope a high-upside arm makes the leap, those are very very rare.
JonKneeVQuote Reply
If you told me that with my first pick in the draft I could have a surefire #2 starter, I’d falling over myself to select that guy. There just aren’t that many top-shelf pitchers in baseball and top prospects (even at the very top) aren’t much better than coinflips.
MylesQuote Reply
I will not be surprised in the least if the Cubs take Bryant if he’s available.
Aisle424Quote Reply
I’d take whichever of Appel and Gray is available. Complaining about Appel only being a #2 when he’s very close to it already just seems like a weak argument , as that still likely makes him the best Cubs starter right now.
SamQuote Reply
If the argument is that Bryant looks like Joe Maurer and Appel looks like Prior then I’m happy either way. But if Bryant might be Carlods Pena and Appel is Tim Hudson. I’ll take Appel. Not sure if analogies are quite right, but you get my drift.
Also I want to see this headline: Big Appel fritters Yanks to win World Series for Cubs.

Where are we going to put Bryant after we move Vogelbach to 3rd and Baez pushes Castro to 2B? Can he play outfield?
GBTSQuote Reply
I suppose Vogelbach can play RF, Almora will be able to cover a decent amount of his turf in center.

IIRC that was a nice catch you made. Over the shoulder? I was the guy in the blue jacket in the first row that hopped over the seat. My wife and mom were bundled up next to me.

Just overheard at a minor league game: “How many balls does the batter get before he can steal first? I think it’s 6.” (dying laughing)

Kind of over the shoulder more just off to the side so I could move my hand with the ball to cushion the impact. Having nobody around makes catching a foul much easier.
I think I saw you guys, You looked cold.

Looks like the Rockies are trying to make this one more competitive.

Yes. Who the hell would take him the way he’s hitting now? Intangibles and a good glove only go so far in this league.
