JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 7-11-13

In Commentary And Analysis, Minor Leagues by myles48 Comments

Hope you had your free slushies yesterday…

Albuquerque Isotopes 4 @ Iowa Cubs 1

Ian Stewart went deep for the 'Topes, part of a 2-3, BB day. His BA is a blistering .194 at the moment. Whatever.

Logan Watkins was 1-3 with a HBP. The only other noteworthy performance was the 1-4, 3B from Brad Nelson

Barret Loux struggled with command in this one. 103 pitches only got him 13 outs, and he allowed 6 hits, 4 walks, and 4 runs. Jeffry Antigua, Marcus Hatley, Eduardo Sanchezand Brian Schlitter all combined for 4.2 scoreless relief frames, though. In fact, only Hatley allowed a baserunner, a single hit.

Tennessee Smokies 4 @ Jackson Generals 1

Arismendy Alcantara is up to .281 on the year with a 3-4 game. He also drew a walk. Alcantara has a .679 OPS against lefties, and a .894 OPS against righties. Javier Baez struck out twice and went 1-5. Justin Bour had a double and a walk. Jonathan Mota went 2-3 with a walk and 2 runs scored. He also tripled. Good for him.

Someone tell me why Alberto Cabrera is still in Tennessee. He went 7 innings, allowing 3 hits and 1 run and a walk. He only struck out 3, but the damage was literally just a solo home run the sweetly named Ji-Man Choi. Tony Zych and Zach Rosscup pitched scoreless 8th and 9th innings.

St. Louis Cardinals 0 @ Chicago Cubs 3

Castro-watch: 3-4, 2 runs. Rizzo-watch: 2-3, 2B, BB, 3 RBI. Nate Schierholtz continues his minor slide, going 0-3 with a walk.

Edwin Jackson went 7 innings and allowed no runs on 3 hits, no walks. He's now 6-10, and I'm not sure anyone else in the league has as many decisions as he does. He's went 12 straight games with one. Actually, I looked it up, and he's tied for 6th. R.A. Dickey is 8-10. Blake Parker had a dicey outing, but James Russell and Pedro Strop bailed him out. Kevin Gregg pitched a scoreless ninth for this 16th save in 17 chances. Holy shit he's been good this year.

Daytona Cubs 2 @ Lakeland Flying Tigers 1

Two XBH in this game; a double from Taiwan Easterling (2-4), and a triple from Bijan Rademacher (1-4). Taylor Davis also had a multi-hit game and drew a walk. Zeke DeVoss was 1-3 with a walk, but was also picked off.

Pierce Johnson once again pitched magnificently. He allowed 1 run on 5 hits, 1 walk in 6 innings. Austin Reed picked up his second save of the year with 3 scoreless innings.

Kane County Cougars 1 @ South Bend Silver Hawks 6

Gioskar Amaya was 1-4 with a walk. Albert Almora was of course 2-5 with a double. When isn't he? Dan Vogelbach was 1-4. Jeimer Candelario was 2-4. Giuseppe Papaccio had a double, and so did Carlos Escobar. Escobar had a walk also.

Brian Smith went 5 innings and allowed 5 runs. Of course, he got the loss. Lendy Castillo only allowed one run in 2 innings. That's cool for him. Nathan Dorris had a scoreless 8th.

Boise Hawks 0 @ Vancouver Canadians 4

No walks, no runs, no chance. Cael Brockmeyer and Trevor Gretzky each had 2 hits, one of Gretzky's was a double.

Rob Zastryzny started the game and went a single inning. It was scoreless. James Pugliese went 4 innings and allowed 4 runs (2 earned). Sam Wilson went an inning and allowed nothing, as did Corbin Hoffner in 2 innings.

DSL Cubs 5 @ DSL Orioles2 2

VSL Cubs 3 @ VSL Mariners 1

AZL Cubs 6 @ AZL Padres 2

I'm not sure why Yasiel Balaguert was "demoted" to AZL from Boise, but he was. He went 2-5 with 2 doubles. Josh Vitters also had 2 rehab AB and a walk. Juan Carlos Paniagua pitched in the US! 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 SO.

Was Baez promoted too soon? You hate to see somebody get promoted like that and struggle the way he has. I know it’s small sample size and all so I’m sure they aren’t too worried yet but still.

I think that was kind of the point, they wanted to challenge him so he would finally start making adjustments.

Regarding SK’s link to the article where Chad Gaudin got arrested for groping a woman in a Vegas ER.
    1. He never had much feel for pitching, I’m surprised he managed to find the sweet spots.
    2. Apparently he is pitching with “acute renal failure.” Wow. That’s impressive. Or maybe his lawyer is feeding Bull—- to the press.

    @ Berselius:
Also, he struggled a lot after his promotion to Daytona and then turned it around. I hope the guy can learn to take a walk, but I think it’s time people realized that Javier Baez is very likely a free swinger who is not going to walk much. As GW showed yesterday, some of those types of players can still be productive, especially ones with as much power as Baez has.

At a young age I was diagnosed with severe skillular arm and hitting failure, and it’s kept me out of baseball ever since. Injuries are a bitch.

Sounds like he would have blown about a .15 or so on the blood alcohol test, and of course he wasn’t thinking straight because of his acute renal failure (ARF). But yeah, bottom line, that’s f’d.

Without getting too psychobabbly, kids that are really good at something (sports, academics, arts, etc.) are at risk of becoming really obnoxious adults if their parents don’t work pretty hard at teaching them humility. I assume any MLB player was probably about the best athlete in high school, even if they basically suck in the majors. Of course, I can’t exactly say that hubris/entitlement/etc. is what’s at play with Gaudin’s decision-making, but I wouldn’t be surprised….

    @ GW:
While some might look at it like Boras got the best of Theo because a “darkhorse” got the most money in the draft, I look at it more like Theo just didn’t care about a couple hundred thousand when he was going to be able to sign Clifton and Alamo anyway.

    @ JonKneeV:

I wasn’t making a point about Theo, though I do think Boras got the best of Theo, and I think it matters little to not at all.

I think it’s hard to deny that Boras is the best at maximizing $. On the other hand, he requires his clients to put themselves in a high risk position in which they may end up doing something they would rather not for a year.

Agreed. Assuming the Cubs were able to sign all the other players they wanted, it does not matter at all. It’s also not like Boras doesn’t get the best of every GM.

I mean, if the reports are true from last year that the Appel turned down $6 million from the ‘stros, he clearly made a mistake in not taking it. (Not that he didn’t come out as well as could be expected from that point forward). That’s the kind of high risk/high reward compromise that Boras asks of his clients.

I think it was pure and simple alcohol that was in play. Isn’t this the same guy who missed a start because he fell into a dumpster injuring himself?

I’d just like to know what kind of person grabs a chick’s breast when she’s on a gurney? That’s fucked up if it’s true.

yeah, “chicks on gurneys” is kind of a weird fetish.

I feel terrified that now everything I write will get blown way out of proportion, or twisted around to make it sound like I’m saying or doing things I’m not.

The signing deadline is at 4pm today, though the climax in activity has already been reached for most teams. Names that may come out for the Cubs: high schoolers Clifton and Carlos Pena, JC pitcher Sean Johnson.

Looks like Will Remillard, a Junior catcher from Coastal Carolina, reached an agreement last night.
