JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 7-26-13

In Commentary And Analysis, Minor Leagues by myles20 Comments

Chicago Cubs 3 @ San Francisco Giants 2

Starlin Castro was 2-5 and continues his return to form. He's not walking any more than usual of late, so maybe the organization decided to just stop messing with him and let Starlin be Starlin. Unfortunately, despite having the game winning ROE yesterday on a liner right by Brandon BeltAnthony Rizzo continues to scuffle badly, going 0-4 with a walk yesterday. His line is down to .237/.329/.434 on the year. Might be his turn for a day off. Nate Schierholtz was 1-3 with a double and 2 walks. The Junior Lake Show was 1-5, also reaching on an error on a bunt single. Welington Castillo was 2-3. David DeJesus was 2-5 with a triple, and seems to be doing a good job proving he's healthy.

Edwin Jackson was damn good last night, outdeuling Matt Cain until the 7th, when he got a bit wild and gave up the lead. His final line was 6.2 innings, 4 hits, 2 walks, 5 Ks, and 2 earned runs. James Russell came in to play LOOGY and couldn't handle the OO part, walking the one batter he faced. Matt Guerrier replaced him and was pretty good, working an inning and a third and striking out 2. Kevin Gregg got the save, allowing a hit in the ninth.

Iowa Cubs 6 @ Oklahoma City RedHawks 10

Mike Olt was 1-5. Donnie Murphy was 2-4 with a double. So was Brad Nelson. Edgar Gonzalez was 2-4 with 2 doubles. Jae-Hoon Ha was 2-4 with no doubles. Doubles doubles doubles doubles. Logan Watkins was 1-4 with a walk. I wish he or Donnie Murphy would get called up or otherwise moved out of Arismendy Alcantara's way.

Justin Grimm got the crap kicked out of him. 2 innings, eight hits, two walks, and seven runs. Welcome to the I-Cubs, you'll fit right in. Casey Coleman cleaned up the next 4 innings, allowing 3 runs on six hits, striking out 3. Marcus Hatley walked a guy but was otherwise spotless. Henry Rodriguez didn't walk anybody, gave up a hit, and got out of there without damage.

Tennesee Smokies 8 @ Huntsville Stars 9

Arismendy Alcantara was 1-5. Javier Baez was 1-4 with a walk. More of those please. Christian Villanueva had a big day, going 3-5 with a HR. Rafael Lopez was 3-3 with a double, a homer, and a walk. Justin Bour was 1-5 with a homer. Every starting position player for the Smokies got a hit. John Andreoli was 1-4 with a SB and a walk.

A.J. Morris was terrible. Yeiper Castillo was also terrible, but slightly less. Kevin Rhoderick was his usual self, terrible. Hunter Cervenka was terrible, but didn't allow any runs, so he wins. The final Tennessee pitching line was a combined 8 innings, 11 hits, 9 runs, 10 freaking walks, and 8 strikeouts. Blech.

Daytona Cubs 4 @ Palm Beach 2

Dustin Geiger was 1-2 with a 2B and 2 walks. Wes Darvill was 1-3 with a walk. Pin-Chieh Chen was 1-3. Zeke DeVoss was 1-4. Wes Darvill was 1-3. Anthony Giansanti was 1-4.

Matt Loosen continues to be really good against people much younger than him. Cool. 5 IP, 6 hits, 2 walks, 4 Ks in a scoreless outing. Dayan Diaz worked 2 scoreless innings. Unfortunately, he came out for a third, gave up a 2 run homer, and failed to record an out. Whoops. 2+ IP, 3 hits, 2 runs, and a walk for Diaz. Yao-Lin Wang got all three outs in the eighth, allowing a hit and punching out 1. Frank Del Valle worked an inning, struck out 2, walked 1, and allowed 2 hits in a scoreless save.

Kane County Cougars 4 @ Beloit Snappers 1

Albert Almora was 1-4 with a double. So was Gioskar Amaya. Dan Vogelbach was 1-1 with 2 walks. Marco Hernandez was 3-4. Wilson Contreras was 1-3 with a homer and a walk. Reggie Golden was 2-4. Oliver Zapata was 1-4 with a double.

Felix Pena had a really nice start, allowing a run in 6 innings on 4 hits, a walk, and 7 strikeouts. Andrew McKirahan allowed a walk and a hit in the 7th. Stephen Perakslis allowed a hit and struck out one in the 8th. And Michael Hamann worked a perfect 9th to finish it off.

Spokane Indians 1 @ Boise Hawks 9

The big story in this one was Kris Bryant's first professional home run:

He finished the day 1-4 with a walk.

Carlos Penalver had the game of the day, though, going 3-4 with a double and a triple. Lance Rymel was 1-4 with a double and a walk. Yasiel Balaguert was 1-4. Every Hawk reached base at least once.

A lot of the Cubs' recently-drafted pitching talent showed up in this one. Rob Zastryzny got the start, allowing 4 hits, a walk, and a run in 2 innings, striking out 3. The Hawks would not allow a run the rest of the way. Sam Wilson allowed a walk and a strikeout in his two innings. Zack Godley struck out 2 in his perfect fifth and sixth innings. Scott Frazier worked the seventh and eighth without incident, striking out 3. And Tyler Bremer closed it out in the ninth with three strikeouts of his own, allowing a hit.

AZL Cubs 7 @ AZL Angels 8 (Game 1 of DH)

David DeJesus got two PAs, and was 0-1 with a walk. Jacob Hannemann was 0-2. Charcer Burkers was 1-2 with 2 walks. Xavier Batista was 1-2 with a double.

AZL Cubs 4 @ AZL Angels 13 (Game 2 of DH)

Somebody found Brett Jackson, and he went 0-4 with a strikeout. Jeffrey Baez was 2-4. Mark Malave was 2-3. Jesse Hodges was 1-3 with a homer.

Trevor Clifton made his first professional appearance in this one, working a scoreless inning but walking 2.

DSL Cubs 12 @ DSL Rojos 3

VSL Mariners 6 @ VSL Cubs 10

    @ sitrick:
I don’t know why it’s not embedding. All you need to do is copy/paste the link into the editor. No hyperlink. I removed the hyperlink, but it’s still not showing up. The video itself seems to be down so maybe that’s why?

Cashman would not directly confirm what he advised Hal Steinbrenner, but told The Post: “I would say we are in a desperate time. Ownership wants to go for it. I didn’t want to give up a young arm [Corey Black]. But I understand the desperate need we have for offense. And Soriano will help us. The bottom line is this guy makes us better. Did ownership want him? Absolutely, yes. Does he make us better? Absolutely, yes. This is what Hal wants, and this is why we are doing it.”

    @ dmick89:

Tried it with the link, without the link, pasting the embed code into the html….none of it worked. I’m sure it was just a funky video. Sorry for the trouble. Thanks for fixing it.

with youtube vids, I always have to paste the link in the html tab and then publish without switching back to the visual editor. if i edit something afterwards in the visual tab, it disappears.

Can’t get tweets to embed in comments either. Tried forever to get that Rosenthal tweet to embed and couldn’t.

I thought I’d put together a comprehensive list of starting times for every year since the Cubs moved to Wrigley Field

Alvin is really out on the cutting edge of Cubs coverage.

    @ sitrick:
Yeah, iframe code is stripped out unless you’re an admin. It’s something I’ve been wanting to change, but the problem is that each time WP is updated, the same changes would have to be made. That’s already done so regular users can post images in comments, but I’d prefer to keep these changes to a core file at a minimum because I forget every time to make those edits. It’s not until someone points out they can’t post an image that I remember.

let me see what else I might be able to do, but I won’t get to it until tomorrow or Monday.
