Iowa Cubs 4 @ Salt Lake Bees 5
I. Don't. Care. And neither do you. Mike Olt went 1-4, but every time he didn't single, he struck out. Logan Watkins also singled, as did a bunch of other people. What do you want from me? At least Jae-Hoon Ha doubled and homered; Edwin Mayonnaise and Luis Flores doubled too. The I-Cubs struck out 14 times and walked twice.
Yoanner Negrin looked really, really good, earlier this year. I haven't watched him for a few months, and in those months he's apparently turned into a dumpster fire. 5 ER in 4.1 IP. Alberto Cabrera, Chang-Yong Lim, and Brian Schlitter each went scoreless to finish the game.
Birmingham Barons 9 @ Tennessee Smokies 6 (14 innings)
Javier Baez went 1-6 with a walk, a SB, and no strikeouts. He scored 2 runs. Good! He had his 5th error. Bad! Arismendy Alcantara walked twice, doubled once, and singled once. Even better! Matt Szczur went 2-7. Rubi Silva went 0-7 with 3 SO. Brett Jackson was 2-6 with a walk, but he also struck out 3 times. Rafael Lopez walked once and singled thrice.
The only notable pitching performance is Kevin Rhoderick's 7 walks in 1.2 innings. That was good for 4 runs, 3 earned, and the loss.

Daytona Cubs 2 @ Fort Myers Miracle 5
Anthony Giansanti, sliding to 1st for this one, went 2-4 with a home run and a walk. Yaniel Cabezas also went 2-4. Everyone else was hot garbage.
Zach Cates allowed 2 in 2, and Kyler Burke did one better and allowed 3 in 2. Dayan Diaz struck out 7 in 3 scoreless, hitless innings. Jeffrey Lorick also pitched a scoreless innings.
Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 2 @ Kane County Cougars 4
It's time to promote Albert Almora and Dan Vogelbach. Almora went 1-3 with a walk, and Vogelbach went 0-1 with 2 walks and a sacrifice fly. Almora was a 6.2% walk rate in Kane County against a 10.7% K rate. Jeimer Candelario doubled and walked, and Reggie Golden apparently hit a 700-ft HR. Oliver Zapata tripled and singled. As a team, the Cougars turned 3 double plays.
Justin Amlung pitched 3 scoreless frames. Nathan Dorris pitched 4 and allowed 2 runs, but struck out just 1 dude. Stephen Perakslis got the save with 2 scoreless innings.
Spokane Indians 3 @ Boise Hawks 5
Kris Bryant went 2-4 with a single and a double. After a really, really bad start to his season, he's been quietly pretty solid. He could sniff KC at the end of the year; disappointing when I though he could end the season at Tennessee, but not the end of the world. Jacob Robers had 2 singles and a walk, and Cael Brockmeyer had double singles. Rony Rodriguez doubled.
Rob Zastryzny was nails again. He struck out two and allowed a hit in two innings. Sam Wilson took the bump next and allowed 2 unearned runs, but it was gross with a 3 WHIP. Zack Godley picked up the win with one earned run in 2 innings, and Scott Frazier allowed 2 hit and no runs/walks in 3 innings.
DSL Cubs 2 @ DSL Orioles2 3
VSL Cubs 9 @ VSL Tigers 5
AZL Angels 8 @ AZL Cubs 0
Nothing exciting, except Trevor Clifton pitched a scoreless inning with one hit and 2 strikeouts.

I kind of like it still, but I agree. It’s really hard to give any shits about the rest of this season in about 36 hours.

I can’t agree. Players who are already great this young tend to have great careers (Cobb, Mantle, Ott, Williams, Robinson, Rodriguez, Jones, Kaline, etc.) He’d have to have a ton of injuries to stop him at this point. Could you give examples of players comparably great this young who didn’t have HOF-worthy careers (not counting pitchers like Dwight Gooden)?

I don’t think it’s worth the time to get into this. If you think he has a good chance, great. I don’t. Not yet. For the very same reasons I argued the same exact thing with regards to Castro a couple years ago. You have to stay healthy, productive and have a long career to get into the Hall of Fame. I’m not betting on any for a single player with 2 years of service time. Comparable players? There probably aren’t because Trout is a very rare player.

Here are the top age 20 seasons: http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2013&month=0&season1=1871&ind=1&team=0&rost=0&age=20,20&filter=&players=0&sort=22,d
Trout is in the lead, and there are tons of HOFers below him. Sherry Magee, while not a HOFer, arguable should have been and Vada Pinson is close.

Trout is also following it up brilliantly. I’d be surprised if he gets less than 60 WAR in his career.

Right, but the people who came closest are mostly in the hall or had hall-worthy careers. I think you vastly overestimate how often (and severe) catastrophes happen. I mean, Griffey had a ton of injuries, but still had a great career. The evidence is very strong that great age 20 season = great career.

That’s got to be great to hear about the No. 3 overall pick out of college.

It’s impressive that he walked those 7 batters and only gave up 4 runs. Way to work around it, Rhoderick.

I know that those who have started a career as well as Trout have ended up in the HOF, but the sample isn’t large enough to say that Trout’s probability is anywhere equal to the percentage who made it.

Why wouldn’t the list include Garza? Ryno said a couple days ago that he hopes he’s traded for prospects. I assume they probably will.

@ dmick89:
I would argue he has a much greater (perhaps an order of magnitude greater) chance of being a HOF’er than any other 20-yo in recent memory. (Back to ARod perhaps.) However, even with those relatively great odds, the absolute odds are still rather slim.

Something like a 1% chance instead of < 0.1% chance.

Agree, it’s definitely higher than anyone I remember since Jr. He got a lot more media attention than Trout has. Even in tiny little Iowa, Jr was a name everybody knew of him. Either before his debut or sometime shortly after. It was crazy.

I’m actually fine with keeping DeJesus and Schierholtz.
MylesQuote Reply
@ dmick89:
True. There’s a few useful pieces left, but I think they have enough projected value to next year’s ballclub that they aren’t going to sell unless someone overpays.

Exactly. Having DeJesus and Schierholtz doesn’t even preclude them from going after Choo/Ellsbury, because Choo is LF and Ellsbury is a CF but DeJesus is actually a natural LF. Lake isn’t blocking anyone, in my opinion.

I know I’ve been beating this horse for a while, but… I don’t get the people saying Trout’s HOF chances are slim. I really don’t. I’m going to go ahead and give him a 70% chance of getting 60 WAR. And he will get 50 WAR. Mark my words.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
About the only thing I can imagine going wrong is a lifetime suspension, or some truly fluke injury like getting paralyzed from the waist down. Injuries didn’t stop Mantle or Griffey or Foxx, etc, and he’s ahead of all of them for his age. There is, so far as I can tell, no evidence whatever that young players tend to break down and under-perform. Trout’s failing to meet minimum HOF standards would be the most epic breakdown of a young position player in history.
