Iowa Cubs 0 @ New Orleans Zephyrs 9
Logan Watkins was cursed by Berselius yesterday. He went 0-4. Ty Wright had a double. Junior Lake struck out twice, but walked. He played RF. J.C. Boscan walked and struck out. Anthony Giansanti is pinch-hitting a lot, and he's good at it. He went 1-1 for the 4th time in a row.
Jake Arrieta really sucked. In 3.2 innings, he allowed 10 hits (10!) and 7 runs. Only 3 earned runs on a Murphy error, though, so his 7.71 ERA looks better than it really was. He only walked 1, but why walk when you have like a .600 BABIP, right? Marcus Hatley pitched 1.1 innings and was perfect. Jeffry Antigua allowed a pair in an inning. Eduardo Sanchez and Casey Coleman had identical 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 SO lines.
Chicago Cubs 7 @ Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Calfornia, one of this proud nation's 50 states 2
Castro-watch: 1-3, HR, BB. I'll take it! Rizzo-watch: 2-4, HR, SO. I'll also take it! Alfonso Soriano had 2 home runs and a walk. Awesome. Even little Darwin Barney hit a 3-run blast, his 5th of the year. He's on pace for a torrid 10 HR this year. Nate Schierholtz was 1-2 with a walk, also. Dioner Navarro had a double and a walk.
Travis Wood had yet another quality start. His ERA sits at 2.69. Matt Guerrier walked a dude and struck out a dude. Ok. Blake Parker and Pedro Strop each pitched a dominant inning.
Daytona Cubs 3 @ Lakeland Flying Tigers 4
This team is no good. Zeke DeVoss went 1-3 with 2 walks. I will say that only Taiwan Easterling did not get on base.
Ben Wells had a quality start, allowing 2 runs in 6 innings on 1 hit and 1 walk. That's really tight. Frank Del Valle went one inning and allowed 2 of everything. Eduardo Figueroa pitched a scoreless 8th.
DSL Cubs 15 @ DSL Brewers 6
VSL Phillies 1 @ VSL Cubs 2
AZL Cubs 1 @ AZL D-backs 5
Chang-Yong Lim pitched another inning of scoreless ball. Trey Masek had a real bad outing, going 1.1 inning and allowed 4 runs. Erick Leal, half of the Tony Campana return, allowed a run in 3.2 innings.

Ok, get that hope monster on a leash. Recalcitrant Nate is getting optimistic. I think the Cubs should resign Garza at 4/70. They’re not going to be able to obtain a better pitcher to replace him for 2014 or 2015, I don’t think. The other FA’s suck. They’re currently projected by fangraphs to win 76 games this year, and yea that’s not better than winning 66 necessarily. However, per BP’s adjusted standings, they’re at or slightly above .500 on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd order wins. They’re actually better than their record. Wood looks like an above avg starter, pair him with F7, Garza, Jackson (whose periphs are better than actual #’s), Villanueva, and some combo of Baker or some other 1-2 FA;s, and its a solid rotation. The offense is fair; Castro and RIzzo can’t be worse next year, they will improve somewhat. Castillo will also improve. If barney still sucks, he can be replaced by a combo of Watkins, Valbuena, Lake to get more offense. Don’t get me wrong, Soriano and Gregg should be traded before July 31 for some arms that could fit in the pen next year. Add in signing Choo for LF, along w/ DeJesus and Schierholtz in the OF next year, and I think that’s a team that can win 85 games. By 2015, Baez, Alcantera, and Soler will be here. No reason Garza shouldn’t be here then, when he can still be above avg. Next years pen will add Vizcaino, Arrieta, and Paniagua, as well as maybe Tony Zych and some other minors dudes. Can’t be worse than this years.

BP has the Cubs 3rd order expected winning percentage at .518, that would be 46-42. They should still sell some stuff off, even if they had that record because they’re still 4th in their own division. I mean, if the Cubs can get a Perez or a Bauer who could legitimately replace Garza in the 2014 rotation, then hey go for it. I just don’t think they’ll get that return for 2.5 months of him; better to resign him.
