Sacramento River Cats 1 @ Iowa Cubs 2
So, there's a pretty cool story here. Josh Vitters came back, and played 3B (Olt played DH). He hit a home run in the bottom of the 4th; then, in the 5th, Olt called, and hit a home run of his own. Vitters ended up going 1-2 with that HR, a walk, and a strikeout; Olt had just the HR and the K.
Justin Grimm had the start and did…OK. 5.1 innings and a single run allowed, but he walked and gave up 4 hits each. He did fan 6. Marcos Mateo pitched 1.2 scoreless, Zach Rosscup (newly promoted) had a dicey 2 outs (hit allowed, 2 walks allowed), and 2 strikeouts. 1.1 innings of scoreless ball for Brian Schlitter, and his 16th save.
Montgomery Biscuits 2 @ Tennessee Smokies 3
Arismendy Alcantara played SS and tripled once. He committed his 28th error. Javier Baez played DH and singled and homered. He didn't commit an error, either! He also struck out twice. Justin Bour doubled, as did Taylor Davis.
Matt Loosen pitched 2 scoreless innings, but the game was stopped and resumed on Eric Jokisch's day to pitch. He went 6.1 innings and allowed 2 runs (one earned) on 4 hits, 2 walks. Tony Zych had the save with 2 outs.
Montgomery Biscuits 4 @ Tennessee Smokies 9
Javier Baez went 1-4 at SS. Christian Villanueva went 2-3 with a walk and a 3-run blast, and Jonathan Mota went 2-3 with a 2-run jack (4 RBI total). Justin Bour went 2-4 with a double, and Nate Samson went 2-3 as well. I like Nate Samson because he's the emergency pitcher.
Yeiper Castillo allowed a quartet of runs in a trio of innings. That's not good. Jeffry Antigua allowed a single hit in 3 innings. Frank Batista pitched a scoreless inning.
Tampa Yankees 4 @ Daytona Cubs 5
This boring team is about to get a lot less boring; both Dan Vogelbach and Kris Bryant are getting called up. Pin-Chieh Chen had 2 singles. Anthony Giansanti and Ben Carhart both tripled and singled.
Ivan Pineyro went 6 innings and was pretty good. He allowed a single run, on 8 hits and a walk. Lendy Castillo went a single inning and sucked; Jeffrey Lorick notched the save with 2 scoreless.
Cedar Rapids Kernels 3 @ Kane County Cougars 4
Strong performance from the top of the order. Oliver Zapata went 1-2 with a double and walk. Giuseppe Papaccio, Dan Vogelbach, and Jeimer Candelario each went 2-4 with a run scored; Jeimer had a double as one of those hits.

DSL Osos 5 @ DSL Rojos 4 (7.5 innings)
AZL Mariners 0 @ AZL Cubs 7
Brian Bogusevice went 1-4 with a double in his rehab assignment. Erick Leal started and was dominant again, pitching 5 scoreless, walkless, 1-hit innings with 6 strikeouts. He's probably on the bottom of the Cubs Top 40 prospects, which is a phenomenal return for Tony Campana.

Wow, they couldn’t even fill out team without scrounging up various DFAs and career minor leaguers.
However, the pitching isn’t nearly as bad as the position players. But we probably knew that

Did anyone see the clip of Cody Ross hurting himself? What the hell was he trying to do? Looked like he was thinking about a headfirst slide then changed his mind. One of the more awkward looking maneuvers I’ve seen in awhile.

Wow. It makes you really think that 5 years is even optimistic.

Is the take away for me from that. Note that Vitters is on the team, yet doesn’t crack the top 20 prospects list anymore for the team. He’s the same age as Olt, I’m curious if he’s still “eligible” for those lists based on his at bats last year, I’m assuming so as Brett Jackson is still on the lists.

@ Jason:
Pretty sure Vitters is missing lists because his status has fallen and so much new talent has been infused into the organization.

It would be spectacular if a DH could actually commit an error as a DH.

Really like the Bryant and Flowbro call-ups. Hopefully they both continue to improve and can start the year at Tennessee next year…here’s to pipe dreams.

no way. i would definitely have to see this to believe it.

I think even 2010, 20-year old Vitters wouldn’t crack the top 10 now. I know it’s been said from a few outlets, but we will likely have a unanimous top 5 system. I don’t think this has been emphasized enough.

I’m sure it’s possible, but I don’t see how it could be accomplished by any human being. I don’t think a human could come close. I wonder if a physicist has looked at this.
dmick89Quote Reply
@ EnricoPallazzo:
I bet it could be done. It would be a linedrive, not a fly ball. You’d almost have to practice it though as an independent skill or maybe use a severely end-weighted bat. I mean, golf drives start basically off a tee.

I’m kind of confused by this, unless baseball bats are much more elastic than I assume.

I think there two potential problems with it in a tee. I don’t think you can get get under it enough and I don’t think any person is strong enough. A mechanical device probably could, but I’d be shocked if any human could come close.
Most of arod’s home runs probably didn’t even go 400 feet with a guy throwing 90 mph on the mound. It’s safe to say he’s using the heaviest bat he’s capable of using well. To hit it out to cf coming in at no velocity and the same bat just can’t be possible.
