JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 8-22-13

In Minor Leagues by myles48 Comments

Memphis Redbirds 4 @ Iowa Cubs 3

The Resistance is a game where players attempt to deduce one another's identities. It is similar in structure to party games such as Mafia and Werewolf, where a small, informed minority attempt to mislead a larger, uninformed majority. The Resistance uses slightly different mechanics from similar games, and was designed explicitly to avoid player elimination and increase available information for decisionmaking.

Games take upwards of half an hour, and are played with 5 to 10 players. The published version of the game includes a board to track progress, role cards, voting cards, mission success/failure tokens, and additional game-modifying plot cards. The Resistance is regarded as more complext than similar party games, giving the players more information and opportunity for deception.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Resistance_(game)

I actually met Travis Worthington from Indie Boards and Cards last week, at Gen-Con (IB&C is the publisher of The Resistance). He's a really nice guy. Also, my friend won the tournament (part of the winning team in the last game), so he won every game IB&C produces next year!

Tennessee Smokies 2 @ Birmingham Barons 4

Arismendy Alcantara doubled and Javier Baez singled. Baez also struck out twice. Brett Jackson led off, and walked once and K'ed thrice. Iter Vehemens ad Necem. Justin Bour singled, and Rubi Silva walked.

Eric Jokisch went 7.2 innings and allowed 4 runs (3 earned, but does it really count when it's your error?). He fanned 6. Yeiper Castillo recorded a single out via K.

Beloit Snappers 4 @ Kane County Cougars 0

Jeimer Candelario doubled, as did Willson Contreras and Jose Dore. However, Trevor Gretzky was 4 for 4 which brings his average at Kane County to .357. He was pretty poor in Boise this year.

Another boring pitcher alert. Felix Pena allowed a run in 2 innings. Brian Smith went 2 scoreless, and Al Yellon (I mean Al Yevoli) went 3 scoreless innings. Sheldon McDonald allowed a trio of runs in 2 innings. 7 hits! Ugh.

Boise Hawks 16 @ Salem-Keizer 11

I played MAMMOTH Settlers of Catan on Friday at Gen-Con. The board was around 16 feet by 16 feet, the robber weighed around 10 pounds, and the dice were HUGE. It was awesome, and I won, which is even more awesome.

Man, this Juan Carlos Paniagua sucks, doesn’t he?

Pretty much. 23 years old and in short-season ball. Sucking. I guess the good news is that it didn’t cost as much money as Concepcion did.

So now that I have time to comment for like the third time in a year, I have many problems with the OV leadership:

    1. Where are the faget points
    2. Why can I write (dying laughing)
    3. Why haven’t you people figured out why the Cubs traded DeJesus yet
    4. Why haven’t you people figured out why the Cubs Rule 5’d that guy and sold him to Mexico yet
    5. Why haven’t you people figured out how to properly season cast iron cookery yet
    6. Why haven’t you people figured out how to make the Cubs good at baseball yet
    7. The Resistance I dont get it
    8. I reiterate why am I allowed to write (dying laughing) what please tell me is the point of a blog where those letters are permitted to appear in a row

This is the worst thing to every happen on this blog.

    @ fang2415:

I will do my best to answer:

    1. Josh said something wicked nerdy about this yesterday, and dmick backed him up
    2. I would assume that Josh will reply with something nerdy again.
    3. Most people are pissed that Kim is no longer with the cubs.
    4. I fell asleep before the end of this question
    5. I left all of mine out in the rain.
    6. Because Obama
    7. See #6
    8. This does seem to be an assault on nature.

Ugh there’s a group that plays that fucking werewolf game at the store I go to. They set up a sound system and crank it all the way up, and still everyone practically shouts into the mic, and you can hear it all over the store. How hard is it to talk loud enough for people 15 fucking feet away to hear it? I want to punch the organizer in the fucking tooth. Or just rip off the stupid looking ‘fox tail’ that he wears.

I thought that looked like a fun game, if a little too interactivey. I do better with games where I’m inside my own head rather than games where I have to read people. I’m a terrible liar.

    and Morosi’s reply today:

I think I’m with Rose on this.

I find that it’s a good rule to generally be on the side Jon Morosi isn’t.

We lost multiple plugins on our move to the new server a week or so ago. One of them was the faget points thingy. It hadn’t been updated in 3 years or more and hadn’t even been offered on WordPress’ own site for at least 2 years. Maybe it would work. Maybe it wouldn’t. It’s way too old and outdated and a security risk. Since we were having security problems, this was was more important than faget points. The other noticeable plugin is the macro. It was causing php log errors repeatedly (every time the site was loaded). I spoke with the plugin developer about the problem, he updated the plugin and we tried it again. Still the same errors. The developer didn’t really know what was going on and it just wasn’t worth exploring it further.

It’s also worth mentioning that we’ve disabled registration. Those already registered can still login (as you know), but we’re not accepting new registrations. One of the biggest problems with WordPress is bot attack against the registration file.

To my knowledge, those are the only noticeable losses on the site.

The gains? The site is secure and it’s monitored by perhaps the best WordPress host around with top notch security protocols. This should mean that I don’t have to fuck around with finding the latest hole that allowed access to hackers and that we should be able to keep the site up nearly 100% of the time.

    @ mikeakaleroy:
Me too. Ichiro played a long time in Japan and at best it’s similar to AAA. Rose didn’t have as many seasons in the minor leagues to accrue as many hits as Ichiro did.

If we’re going to include hits in Japan, why stop there? Why not include hits all the way back to Little League? Maybe we can include softball, pick-up games and batting practice.

I blame Tangotiger for this. It’s stupid. Ichiro does not have 4000 hits.

Even if I’m a little late to the game, I thought some mid-80s What If would be at least as fun as Werewolf at 700db. Dying laughing.

(See, the macro works for me.)

    @ dmick89:
Agreed. It’s a little difficult for me to agree with Rose on anything unless he himself said “Pete Rose is an asshat”. That I would agree with. This seems so cut and dry though, but I’m sure Morosi just wanted people to argue about it.

That being said, the hits leader should have been in the HOF many years ago, but since the HOF is a joke, no surprise.

    @ mikeakaleroy:
I’m just surprised there is apparently a debate about this. Makes no sense how can compare the two. Tuffy Rhodes sucked here (except for that opening day he hit 3 bombs off Doc) and was a superstar in Japan. The two leagues aren’t similar.

    @ josh:
That’s as much thought as I had put into it until recently when Tango wrote about it. It was stupid then and now that it’s caught on, it’s even more stupid. There are ways to acknowledge how awesome Ichiro has been throughout his professional career without arguing that hits in Japan are somehow similar to hits at the MLB level. If all we care about is hits then IMO you have to tell me why hits in the backyard playing by yourself don’t count.

    @ Berselius:
    Is he still playing there?

I don’t know. I just find this whole argument stupid. Pete Rose has 4256 hits. Ichiro has 2723. We can only compare these two in any meaningful manner by looking at their MLB stats. If you want to look at Ichiro’s hits in Japan then you have to take strength of the league into account. In other words, Ichiro would not have had the same number of hits in MLB that he had in Japan. No fucking way.

The Cubs need to win 26% of their remaining games to avoid a 100 loss season (9 of 35). Since Aug 2 they’ve won 28% of their games and they were 2-10 on their last homestand.

    Just throwin’ that out there.

It’s definitely stupid to add Ichiro’s Japan hits to his total but I think that if Ichiro started his career in MLB, he would have damn near 4,000 hits.
