Justin Steele to undergo surgery, out for the season

In News And Rumors by berselius146 Comments

Well, this sucks.

Cubs lefty Justin Steele is undergoing season-ending surgery Friday to repair the flexor tendon and address the UCL. Unclear on damage to UCL until doctor goes in, Counsell said. A big blow to the Cubs.— Meghan Montemurro (@mmontemurro.bsky.social) April 13, 2025 at 2:35 PM

No clue if it’s a full TJ or not, but as far as this year goes it doesn’t matter.

I’m seeing the Cubs play the Padres on Wednesday. Kinda disappointed to miss Shota, but excited to visit Petco.

I have been off the grid today. Did not know my towel-drill premonition had proved prophetic. What a goddamn bummer.

At the risk of jinxing it, whatever happens from here on out, the Cubs pen (let’s face it, including the starter) has already exceeded expectations tonight.

    Rice Cube,

One of my least popular Star Wars opinions among other Xennials/elder Millennials is that the Special Edition ending of ROJ is a million times better than Yub Nub.

    dmick89,

Rea will need to be further stretched out.
Wicks can probably piggyback and is also probably stretched enough to take 4 or 5.
Assad needs about a month to get back into game shape.
I think Chris Flexen is probably the first emergency call up if they need it.
Keegan Thompson is still in the organization.
Cade Horton is more realistic as an option closer to June.
They need to cobble together stuff until at least the Fourth of July when a trade is more likely.

    berselius,

So last year I went to the Skywalker Saga marathon (dipped out after ROJ, which I think is the proper endpoint for that term anyway) and I don’t know if it was being up all night watching Star Wars in a theater with a bunch of other dorks or just seeing Anakin’s story from start to finish, but it felt genuinely cathartic. It’s such a more fitting coda than the silly Ewok song.

Just realized that we actually got JD for a west coast road trip instead of Sutcliffe. You love to see it.

They probably don’t roll the dice on a Sandy trade until June, so they still have to cover like 6 weeks…they’re more likely to convince Lance Lynn to unretire and even then they’d need a month for him to ramp up

Spencer Turnbull is still out there, and has been working out for teams.

There’s $21M floating around out there, probably not making money on the stock market unless Pete R is channeling insider info.

    berselius,

Amusingly if you go all the way down to 1 PA minimum, the wRC+ leader is sneks pitcher Ryne Nelson, of the Dbacks finale bullpen meltdown fame.

    berselius,

The interesting thing about the Vladdy contract, other than its blatant play at avoiding Canadian taxes, is the signing bonus heavy structure allows Vladdy to be paid whether they play or not pending a lockout

    Rice Cube,

Yeah, that’s exactly what I was thinking too.

Counter to my argument about the 2022 weirdness was the Kris Bryant deal, which was weird on multiple levels (dying laughing).

    Rice Cube,

Of all the Cubs core players from 2014-21, KB was the one I thought had the best shot at a HoF career. Sad to see him crater so quickly and completely.

    Perkins,

Felt similarly with Rizzo. Huge bummer that he’s on the couch after all those crazy concussion problems last year. I don’t know that he would be in the HoF but I thought he could be a good (2-3 war) player through his late 30s (and hopefully as the face of the cubs)

SD failing to exploit the market inefficiency by signing Heyward in a place where there’s rarely a rain delay, smh
