Breaking. Source: Kris Bryant to be called up by Cubs on Friday. Story coming at http://t.co/iRRtXbR1Vj

Bryant played in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader today (he only hit 1 HR, but he almost had another). The second game was rained out, and then Jesse Rogers dropped the bomb we were all waiting for. This is slightly different timing than we would expect: Jed and Theo generally like to let their prospects open on the road to get comfortable before Wrigley happens to them, but extenuating circumstances have obviously thrown a wrench into those plans. Bryant will miss the additional year of team control by one day, and the Cubs will get him for 154 games this season (they went 5-3 in the other 8). A few stray thoughts: I wonder what this means for Mike Olt. My first thought is that he’ll split some time in the corner outfield spots, though I’d like to see Soler play every day. That would mean Denorfia probably doesn’t have a spot, then, unless Szczur is gone (which I also don’t want to happen). Sadly, I think Mike Olt gets Wally Pipp’ed here, if Wally Pipp wasn’t all that good to begin with. Still, I feel bad for Olt, who really had put together some nice PAs this season. Seeing as this is the first day that the Cubs have the extra day of control, look for lots of hand-wringing by the Players’ Union and Scott Boras. The FO can lean on the fact that they were resorting to Chris Coghlan at the hot corner for multiple high-leverage innings in two games this year, but it definitely looks like dirty pool. Time will tell if it’s all smoke with the lawsuit talk or if there is really fire. This is going to be awesome. EDIT: As soon as I sent this, I saw that Olt is going on the DL.
Mike Olt to go on DL with hairline fracture of ulna. Will be in cast 3 weeks. Bryant coming up for Friday. #Cubs — Bruce Miles (@BruceMiles2112) April 17, 2015
Tough break. Really sucks for him.
