Some moderately surprising (but not really) news as the Cubs will bring top prospect Matt Shaw to Japan:

“Matt Shaw’s going to Japan,” Counsell told reporters. “That’s probably the news — the big news.”

The news from the various beats also states that the Cubs will bring Jordan Wicks, Ben Brown, and Brad Keller. They’ll put off roster moves for now, but there will need to be a 40-man roster move if they want to add Shaw to the active roster, and another to add Keller if necessary. Seems kind of lame to DFA somebody while they’re in Japan but perhaps they would be stateside and not with the travel party. We know most of the regulars (other than Nico Hoerner, still rehabbing in Arizona for the “regular” opening day) plus both Vidal Brujan and Gage Workman are going to Japan, so we’ll see what the official announcement says later.

    So Assad and Nico are inactive and staying stateside…the Cubs get to carry 26 active guys, 3 active but not actually playing in the games, and 2 who don’t even have to be on the 40-man roster to give them cover and to just eat some innings in the exhibitions.

    I’m a little puzzled and disappointed about Lance Lynn, but I assume he won’t take innings from pitchers who need or deserve them more.

    So yesterday AZ Phil said Rea was pitching in minor league games, and this picture came out late last night where you look at all the guys in the team photo and although it may be true that white guys look similar, you can’t actually pick out Rea…seems he’s flying out now to be there in time for the actual games.
