Next year's Bryan LaHair

In News And Rumors by dmick89Leave a Comment

If you’ve followed the Cubs closely long enough you can’t help but notice that some Cubs fans (many? most?) fall in love with a certain prospect each year who is going to save the organization. The only problem is that these prospects aren’t really prospects. Micah Hoffpauir was a 28-year old rookie, but he had hit so well in AAA that he needed to replace Derrek Lee according to Cubs fans. Bobby Scales was about 308 years old and he was the popular savior one year. Jason Dubois, Sam Fuld and others have been in similar situations. This year it’s 28-year old Bryan LaHair. If you asked the average Cubs fan they’d tell you he’s the best player on the team and that’s it a sign of how awesome the Cubs farm system is that they can develop such young stars.

I was thinking about trying to predict who it will be next year. The easiest thing to do is just to look at the AAA roster, but that will change quite a bit. The Cubs will sign some guys to invite to spring training to fill out spring rosters who will get sent to Iowa, there will be trades and some will be just be released. Still, it’s the best starting point we have.

There are 6 players on that roster that stand out. The youngest of the group is Ty Wright. He’ll be 27 years old in February and this year he posted an .861 OPS between AA and AAA.

Next on the list is 28 year old Scott Moore. Moore was once a top prospect who the Cubs acquired from the Tigers (Kyle Farsnworth?). After leaving for the O’s organizations a few years ago, he returned to the Cubs this past offseason. In AAA he hit .295/.380/.444. If he can hit a few more home runs early in the season next year he’ll have it wrapped it. He’ll be the savior of the organization according to the fans and even the retarded media by next July.

Matt Camp will be 28 and he’s the perfect candidate. He was not very good in his career, but if he gets hot to start the season all of that will be overlooked. He’ll become a great looking prospect at the age of 28.

The third pick in the draft over a decade ago, Luis Montanez is back with the Cubs and poised to be the next great prospect to save the Cubs. In AAA he hit .321/396/.492. Montanez has the added bonus of familiarity. He’s been with the Cubs at least once this season so a great start for him next year and the 30 year old will become everything the organization has ever lacked.

Bobby Scales may be 34 next year, but he had a hell of a season in AAA this year. Like Montanez, the fams are familiar with him, but him having been a top prospect in the organization at the age of 30 or 32 may affect whether or not they think he is still currently a top prospect. Maybe they think he just aged later than the average player. I think it’s unlikely, but I wouldn’t rule it out.

Augie Ojeda. He’ll only be 37 so I wouldn’t rule him out either.

My bet is on Ty Wright. I’m not sure familiarity helps and in fact think the more familiar Cubs fans get with players the more they dislike them. Most have never heard of Ty Wright or Matt Camp and Wright is the superior hitter by a long margin.

MB, I think Matt Camp got suspended for taking too many happy pills and Bobby Scales is in Japan (dying laughing)

But you never know, they could make their way back home eventually.

Have there ever been older minor leaguers who ended up producing well at the major league level? And if not, then why do teams keep the Hoffpauiers and the LaHairs around?

Many fans like minor leaguers (and dislike veterans) because of their salaries. For some reason, fans get deeply offended by free agents with 7-figure salaries as if it’s their own money being spent. People say, “My god, I can’t believe we’re paying Pena $10 million! We should be getting $10 million of production.” Never mind that these fans often have no idea what “$10 million” is actually worth; they just know that it’s a big number.

I would put myself in that camp until the last couple seasons, really. It’s easy to get caught up in the emotion of that much money. Scales plays for peanuts, gets called up, has a couple of hits and you start getting excited. You get caught up in the individual story, but unfortunately baseball is about production over a very long timeframe, so those individual stories the media like to tout don’t mean much in terms of having a winning season. Call it the Major League effect or something. It should be the guy who wants it more. But it turns out its the team with the best talent across the board.

I’m sure there are a fair number of guys who “got it” all of a sudden and became useful members of a team. Teams keep them around because they fill out the minor league rosters, maybe they are decent coaching candidates, and that .001% chance that they could be that late bloomer. What the hell, it’s just a minor league salary.

The problem is that fans want to leach onto the Mike Morses or Garrett Joneses and think that it can happen for every guy who plays well in the minors. The fact is that most of them will end up like Roosevelt Brown or any of the other 90s era outfield prospects that the Cubs rotated in and out but who were all AAAA players. Too good for the minors, but overmatched at the MLB level.

I’m glad LaHair is getting a chance and he’s mostly been getting time in the outfield where I don’t mind seeing any of the veterans sit. he’s also added a bat in the middle of the lineup that seems to like to work the count. maybe when the book gets out on him, he’ll be easier to retire in a shorter pitch sequence, but for now, he’s been having some nice at-bats. I wouldn’t mind having him around next year as a 4th or 5th outfielder. Particularly as Soriano continues to degrade against righties.

I’d say if there’s a guy you know can do better than LaHair who isn’t costing too much, fine, but I don’t have a problem trying out a LaHair and seeing if he can cut it at cost. I certainly don’t see him as a savior or anything, as a lot of casual fans might, but he could end up being a guy who has a single good year, or two good months, and contributes that way.

I think Bobby was upset or just saw the writing on the wall when he didn’t make the team out of Spring Training. He got called up, had limited success, and didn’t make the team. Doesn’t seem that unusual to me, people always referred to Grossman as “Rex.” I think part of it comes from the coaches because Lovie always refers to him as just “Jay”. (insert jazz hands here) I think your Packer loving is the major irritant here, not people calling Cutler by his first name.

The yellow does seem out of place within the design. Maybe if they had used it to outline the Marlins it would feel more integrated. The font clash is more subtle. I think they tried to marry the common blocky elements of traditional baseball and south beach fonts. The peaks on the M are obviously an homage to the massive ta-tas compressed by lycra in the club lines in MIA.

It doesn’t weight the runs in any way. What about like a scaled RBI calculator, weighted for how important it was in that particular game.
I just think it looks busy, which is odd considering there are only 3 colors. The bordering of the M is what bothers me. I think one solid color (don’t care which one), would make it look a lot better.

Regardless of whether the logo sucks or not, I think we can all agree that the Marlins will win their 3rd, 4th and 5th world series before the Cubs win one.

As for the RBI discussion, the reason RBI is a relatively useless stat is that it’s heavily dependent on where a player bats. A leadoff batter will have fewer runners on base and fewer runners in scoring position than any other spot. The 3rd, 4th and 5th spots have the most. When looking at only RBI, we’re not taking into account the number of opportunities. BPro has OBI% (Others Batted In Percentage), which is a much better stat than RBI.

Nothing wrong with liking RBI though. People like round numbers and 100 RBI is always pretty cool. Just as batting .300 is
