SK,
It didn’t seem like he was getting a ton of playing time down the stretch either. I assume it’s Joe’s trying to balance getting the better defenders like Heyward in the lineup and he’s committed to starting Almora against LHP. Assuming Baez is also a constant, LF is about the only place to start Happ, and you’d like to give Schwarber a shot there since he has pretty mammoth power.
I wouldn’t mind seeing him get some reps at 2B though. Javy looks like shit in the postseason so far.
PerkinsQuote Reply
Perkins,
The Cubs really seemed to take off when Happ started getting a lot of playing time. I’m not saying he was responsible. He was a part of it, but not the biggest part. Either way, I like sticking with what’s been working and Joe has changed it up with his lineup. He did start favoring Jay down the stretch though so this isn’t a surprise. Honestly, I doubt it matters. The Cubs haven’t looked very good against curves for awhile so I expect Hill will make the Cubs looks pathetic.
dmick89Quote Reply
I just think Heyward should sit against LHP. I don’t know if Schwarber and Jay should both sit to make way for Happ in the OF. Happ is worse against LHP than RHP but he’s still a lot better than Heyward. The all D lineups are cool to play sometimes, and make sense sometimes. Cubs need to start scoring some fucking runs and I associate Happ with run scoring much more than Heyward, and lately, more than Baez.
SKQuote Reply
SK,
Given their lack of offense in the postseason (NLDS 5 notwithstanding), I’m inclined to agree. I get Almora vs LHP, but there’s not really a good reason to play both of Heyward and Baez (or Zobrist) at Happ’s expense.

I don’t mind the two-out walks so much, though. Especially with Puig batting and the weak-hitting shortstop coming up.

dmick89Quote Reply
Nate,
Heyward has a similar offensive projection (most projections have Heyward the better hitter) and Happ is a much worse fielder.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Why did Heyward bat if they were taking him out?
dmick89Quote Reply
Rizzo the Rat,
Except that Heyward has proven unproductive in post season so far, so giving Happ a shot makes sense.
Baez’s walk was nice, but if he keeps looking so clueless, I’d like to see Happ at 2b tomorrow.

berselius,
Lefty leading off. Guess we get Strop for one batter, then Duensing for next 3.
Rizzo the Rat,
No. Because Bryant has more offensive upside and a better track record. Also, Baez tends to rebound after a game on the bench.
