This blog has been active for exactly a month now and we’ve gotten hundreds of emails asking for us to provide user profiles. We’ve gotten dozens and dozens of emails asking that we provide a way for our readers to publish content to the blog. We hear about FanPosts and Diaries and we’ve responded. We listened.
Each registered user has a profile page. Your latest comments are included and you can add your twitter feed there as well. You can also write your own blog entry. We’ve set up Unobstructed Views to be something that is often called a community blog. If you talk about how great Obstructed View is, you may even get your article promoted to the front page. We’ll have an RSS feed on the sidebar that links to all new articles on Unobstructed Views. There’s a link the menu to it as well as a link taking you directly to the page where you can manager your blog articles. The Unobstructed Views menu item up top also has links to your profile.
We hope you can take some time to publish your own articles. Doing so is relatively simple. Scroll over Unobstructed Views on the menu, click on New Article Or Manager Your Articles. If you do the latter, click New Blog. It’s rather straightforward. When you are done with your article and want to publish it, change Publish to yes. You’ll need to select one of the two categories. Access should be set to Public. Enter a title for your article and then add your article to the editor. There are some icons to help with formatting.
There are several links below the editor (Image, Page break, More, Jcomments On and Jcomments Off). If you need to upload an image, go ahead. I don’t know why you’d want a page break. More creates a link to Read More. If your article is really long, this can be useful. Ignore the Jcomments buttons. Comments are enabled by default.
When you’re done with your article, change publish to yes and then click Save at the bottom. To view your article on the site, click Unobstructed Views on the menu. Then go to twitter, facebook and other social networking sites you frequent and let everyone know. You should also call your family and friends and have them tell 10 people each.
If there’s something you’d like to discuss, post something on it. If there’s a news item about the Cubs or MLB that we haven’t touched on, write something about it. Doesn’t have to be much. There’s no minimum character nonsense.
There’s also a new login for the site. Gone is the bar at the top of the screen and at the top of the sidebar is a new login module. Same username/password and you can now also login using twitter or facebook if you don’t want to register for the site.

Other than that, I don’t think they do. That’s not necessarily bad. i read a pretty interesting article last night that said with the lockout being ended by the judge the NFL should postpone the draft. The reason being is that in the 1970’s during a stoppage a federal judge ruled that in the absence of a collective bargaining agreement the NFL draft violates anti trust laws. So if the draft goes on tonight a player who is picked could legally sue the NFL to allow themselves to negotiate with all teams instead of the team that picked them AND have a legal precedence to back it up.

I think some team is going to get a steal in Williams. He had a down year, but he was a top-5 CB in college football as a true sophomore.
Some people are calling him a S, but I think he’s basically what Charles Woodson is for GB right now. He can play the slot, outside (best in press, imo) or over the top.

So did I. But every year, teams do things that make you scratch your head. I doubt this year is going to be the new 83′ draft for QBs but that seems to be the thinking for some of these teams when they pick QBs. That’s 5 QBs in the first 12 picks. That would be insane.

Teams feel like they have to get their franchise QB and they reach or get a bust. QB is the hardest position to draft. If I were a GM, I’d put together the best OL I could. With a great OL, you can have a little wiggle room with your QB and not have to be so perfect with the pick.

It looked like he was going for a torpedo hit, or maybe to lead with his helmet and jar the ball loose. The Colorado dude took a step back and you can see Williams juke left sort of in anticipation, but then Colorado dude steps forward just a bit again…the helmet would’ve gone where the ball would be if Colorado dude had kept going back, so maybe he was trying for the ball-stripping hit, but the tackle was pretty good too. The arm wrapping around Colorado dude is also very close to where the ball is, I think he wanted to wrap up the guy rather than make a strip motion as the tackle became the priority.

Regardless if that’s a safety or not, it’s good heads up football. He was coming out of the endzone and went back in. It didn’t look like the ball came out, which I think is the rule, but still, a play that close, you might get the call to go your way.

Maybe that’s the help tackler’s job, but the help didn’t get there in time. I think the primary guy’s job is to secure the tackle…it’s possible he didn’t know whether he could 100% make the strip and also secure the tackle, but with the wave of white jerseys coming in, you’re probably right, he could’ve tried for the strip, still slowed the guy down, and then the help would’ve crushed him anyway.

Actually, no, a lot of them don’t. I grew up in Arkansas, and lived in Alabama for a while, and I don’t think I lived in a house with a habitable, shelterable basement until we moved to Iowa. Not nearly as many houses with basements. I don’t know about public shelters, but since state and local gvts. aren’t spending much on public facilities of any kind down there, I don’t imagine they’re in the best of shape.
That tornado that went through Tuscaloosa was a MILE WIDE, dude. That’s part of how 200 people died, tho that number is certainly gonna go up as they dig through the wreckage in Tuscaloosa. it went through some heavily populated parts of town. Birmingham and Tuscaloosa combined 2010 population:391,685; Dead: 162.
To summarize: .07% of the population died in the Kansas storm, .04% in the Alabama storm.

It’s a lot worse than what GW quotes above. DJ looked at one of the luckiest situations ever.
Before we start sucking Kansas’s dick for their tornado preparedness, which flat out fucking sucks compared to where I grew up, let’s compare recent tornadoes. The 2007 tornado in Greensberg killed 0.67% of the town’s population. The tornado that nearly ripped through a college campus in Tuscaloosa killed 0.02% of its population. Everyone agrees that width of the tornado in Alabama was a mile wide and there were varying reports with the one in Kansas. A few reports said a half mile wide. Some said a mile wide. Some said a mile and a half. This is probably due to the Kansas educational system. 1/2 mile, 1 1/2 mile…what’s the difference?
Here in Topeka they blare a stupid fucking horn every time it’s partly cloudy. I look outside right now and spot a cloud. A horn is soon to go off I’m sure. I’d guess the reason only a couple people died in the storm DJ is talking about is because they spent their entire lives in the basement because of the 367,078 times per year the fucking horn blares. Not to mention they test it on the days when there aren’t any clouds so the annoying motherfucker goes off every single day. I’m not joking. There’s a Wallgreens a few miles away from where we live, but we live just a bit outside of town. We go there maybe once a month. I’ve been there with the nearby horn blaring at least a dozen times. I’d say there’s a 10% chance that fucking thing is going off the next time I go there and for no good reason either.
This doesn’t include the annoying as fuck tv tests they do too. I haven’t lived in Iowa for about a decade, but I hope they aren’t as bad as it is here. Per square miles Iowa has more tornadoes than Kansas does. They average 1 death per year. Kansas averages 4 per year. Alabama 6. The population in Kansas is 2.8 million while it’s 3.0 million in Iowa and 4.8 million in Alabama. The tornado path length per sq. mile rank for those states is 2nd for Alabama, 4th for Iowa and 7th for Kansas.
At least Kansas has basements, which is where everybody is 365 days a year because of the sirens. Sorry, but I have no respect whatsoever for this state’s ability to handle tornadoes. It’s a joke compared to where I grew up. I really wish they’d just shut that siren down and let me use common sense. My hearing would be improved and I’d be saved much frustration.
Seriously, this and the dumbass Kansans who drive in the left lane on the interstate (which is seemingly at least 95% of the population). I like this state, but those two things really piss me off. Add in the Phelps clan and maybe we should just move. (dying laughing)

I think tornadoes still don’t scare people as much because they are so localized. I was in St. Louis when the tornado tore through their airport and flattened a couple of neighborhoods. We got a bit of rain and wind. We were about 5 miles away.

I thought tornados were random and what not, but two days ago they mentioned that this storm was going to be massive and there would be tornados. Isn’t that enough time to figure out how/where to hunker down?
In Florida we get pounded by hurricanes, the advantage being that you know a hurricane is coming way ahead of time. If you are caught in the middle of it you are a dumbass.[/quote]The problem is that larger population centers can’t “hunker down” like smaller areas can. Traffic is often ridiculous in bad weather and not even drivable in a larger city. In a small city you could have every living person in a car and you’d still be traveling like nobody is on the road. In smaller cities, the population isn’t as condensed. There’s no huge company that employs thousands of people. A larger city not only has one of those, but often multiple places where there more employees than a small town even has in total population.
Topeka is relatively spread out. If a tornado came through here it likely wouldn’t kill many (if any at all) unless it went through certain parts of the city where the population density is higher. Take the mall for example. It’s not large by any definition, but it has a lot of employees and customers. If a tornado tears apart the mall or anywhere near it, there are going to be deaths. There are dozens of restaurants in the area and gas stations.
Basically, in a mile stretch in that area you have a mall, a few gas stations, about 10 restaurants (like an Applebee’s) and many other fast food restaurants. There’s a Wal-Mart, a Best Buy, Kohl’s, Barne’s and Noble and a Sam’s Club, Home Depot and Lowe’s. Probably more. If a tornado touched down in that area and was the size of the one that tore through parts of Alabama there would be many deaths.
On the other hand, if one tore through my neighborhood, there likely wouldn’t be any. There are four houses on a mile or mile and a half stretch of road where I live. Three of the families have kids who are off to college or living elsewhere. It’s just the husband and wife. We have two kids. There’s basically 10 people living in the same mile stretch. We all have basements. After the 79th siren we would eventually go down to the basement.
Take another mile stretch. The first house I bought in Topeka and still own is in a residential section, but toward the outskirts of the city. The same mile stretch would have dozens of houses. Maybe a hundred. Most of the families have children. There is probably no less than 400 people. If it went through there we’d likely see a death or two and several injuries.
The difference in location matters. Without an understanding of the difference the death total is irrelevant. One tornado in Topeka would probably kill at least 10 to 20. Another would kill nobody and injuries would also be highly unlikely. Yet another one would cause a few injuries and maybe a death. Same city. Same size tornado.

The odds of any tornado hitting me were so small that it just seemed a complete waste of time to get off my lazy ass and move. Not even that, I’d go outside. I’d go for a drive. One time I was in Utah with a couple friends. I was about 22 or 23. Several tornadoes had touched down near where we were. We did nothing.
Oh yeah, my friends and I were camping.
A hurricane is different because it’s not nearly as localized as you say. The tornado just isn’t likely to hit where you are at that moment. I’ve lived in Iowa and Kansas most of my life and I’ve still never seen a tornado in person. The time in Utah was the closest I had ever been to one where it hit and I was several miles away.

The warning system in Kansas isn’t any better. It’s just something they like to use. They figure if they use it so frequently that people will be too afraid to leave their basements. Next up for Kansas legislature: force families to remain in basement forever. Fewer deaths that way.

I think they’re frustrated with the taking of pitches within the strike zone, but there are also times when there’s a strike that you either foul off, or you can’t do anything with, so I have no issues with those. I do get annoyed with guys like Soto sometimes for not protecting the plate on borderline pitches that go as called third strikes. Sometimes the ump is just blind. However, given the context of what we know of the Cubs, telling a guy NOT to talk walks if they’re gift-wrapped is stupid.

If he can’t hit .300 and hit 30 home runs he’s probably not going to have much of a career in baseball. The guy cannot get on base. At all. Robert Whitenack, RHP, Cubs (Double-A Tennessee): 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Whitenack entered the year with very little fanfare, but he’s generating attention after striking out 25 while walking just one in four Florida State League starts and then delivering six shutout innings in his Double-A debut yesterday. An eighth-round pick in 2009 who had an ERA near five for Low-A Peoria last year, Whitenack’s doesn’t throw especially hard, but his average-velocity fastball plays up due to the downhill plane created by his 6-foot-5 frame as well as the heavy sink he gets on the pitch, while he’s always he a good slow curveball to go with it. His ceiling is as a back-end starter, but that’s a massive improvement from where he was heading into the year as little more than an organizational arm.
#
# Jae-Hoon Ha, OF, Cubs (High-A Daytona): 2-for-5, R, RBI, BB. First walk in 18 games gives him .370/.381/.593 batting line; plus-plus arm recording sixth assist of the year last night and has 25 in 174 outfield games.
Matt Szczur, OF, Cubs (Low-A Peoria): 3-for-4, 2B, BB, K. Three straight multi-hit games raise averages to .310/.385/.379; scouts see a slashy swing with little power, and he’s yet to really use his speed with just one stolen base.

Right.Density is the big difference here. I don’t know the exact path of the tornado in Tuscaloosa, but from what I’ve been able to gather it went through heavily populated neighborhoods, near campus, lots of rent houses and apartment houses, (probably none of which had basements or shelters) as well as down a major stretch of in-town highway, probably catching lots of people at work. It just destroyed a friend of mine’s house in Alberta City, a residential suburb to the East. The combination of the width and force of the tornado in Tuscaloosa, and the density of the areas where it touched down, just isn’t comparable to what even a stronger one
could do in a midwestern town of 3,000 folks.

Yeah it’s important to walk and all but don’t you want to be more worried about his ball/strike judgement then his ability to walk? I wouldn’t necessarily care if he’s swinging at good pitches and hitting them hard but making outs. Isn’t that something you can teach someone when they get called up? How to take a walk?
