@ Rice Cube:
Yeah, that’s great news, but it unfortunately doesn’t add a whole lot to the Cubs right now. Down the road the increased revenue will, but not so much right now.
@ dmick89:
Oh yeah, I’m just making a silly quip. I would’ve preferred to see them just say damn the torpedoes and sign every free agent, but since that’s not the plan, I’ll just wait for pitchers and catchers to report like a good bored fan.
@ Rice Cube:
This season is going to suck pretty righteously. At least last season we could kind of fool ourselves that maybe David DeJesus was going to be the real Jesus. It’s just going to be a slog this season.
I, for one, think the Cubs have significantly improved their pitching this offseason. All the usual health caveats apply to this team, but those notwithstanding, I’m pretty bullish most of this pitching staff.
I think both Samardzija and Garza are reasonable bets to exceed their innings pitched projections, and even if the Cubs play it safe with Baker, I expect him to make it back to the mound before too long, and to be pretty good once he does. It’s well within the realm of possibility that Samardzija takes another step forward this year and delivers ~200 high quality innings. I think the Cubs will be rewarded for being so cautious with Matt Garza last year, and expect him to pitch well in his last year before free agency.
I’m not quite as high on the Scott Feldman signing as some in the sabermetric community seem to be, but I’m probably as happy with Edwin Jackson signing as anyone is, and actually happen to really like the Carlos Villanueva signing as well. I just think the Cubs did an indisputably outstanding job identifying where value was to be had in this offseason’s pitching market.
Basically, the Cubs need two from the foursome of Carlos Villanueva, Travis Wood and Scotts Baker & Feldman to hold down the fourth and fifth spots in the starting rotation. I feel really good about that.
I also think there’s a pretty reasonable chance that the new Japanese pitcher Fujikawa does a really nice job coming out of the bullpen. Even if he can’t be used as anything other than a strictly one-inning guy, I think he was another good value purchase by the Cubs this offseason.
Are people in the sabermetric community really thinking highly of this Feldman deal? Feldman seems pretty terrible to me. I’ll be pleasantly surprised if he’s much better than replacement level.

Well done, Josh. That’s about all there is.
