This was the sort of game where, if you weren’t a Cubs fan, you would have a hard time believing a team could lose like that to a shitty AAA team like the Astros. But since we are Cubs fans, this barely even registered on our misery index.
I don’t know who Bogusevic is (though by just hearing his name, I would have guessed “mid-ranked tennis player” instead of “major league baseball player” as his occupation). I’m also still not sure if I’m spelling Bogusevic correctly and I don’t care enough to look it up. I also don’t know what Marlon was trying to accomplish by jumping into the wall like that.
What I do know is that he could be twenty feet tall and he wouldn’t have been close to catching it. Also, the Cubs still suck.

Anyway, I said this before, but Marmol’s slider was flat as a pancake today. He even got away with a few hangers before serving up the gopher ball. I hope he fixes it before his next outing (again). It’s a shame because he had a really good stretch after getting back into the closer position.

The jump was inexplicable. They were showing a long shot on WGN and the ball never even entered the frame that I ever saw. That was Marlon Byrd’s “F-U” to Marmol. If Z had done that, he’d have been given 1 week no dinner.

Possible reasons…
1. Phony hustle (already stated)
2. Compensating for something
3. Bad depth perception
4. Frustration
5. Mad at Marmol
6. 4+5
7. Because he’s the Wyrd
8. Decoying Houston runners into thinking it’s a deep sac fly, thus opening up the possibility that one guy would overrun another on the bases, thereby negating that baserunner and keeping the game tied (pfft)
9. Thought Tal’s Hill was there and wanted to preemptively leap to avoid having to climb it flat-footed
10. I dunno

I don’t know. If quarterbacks are going to be hellbent on doing the Favre-esque not-going-to-go-down-easily-because-I’m-big-and-strong-and-can-still-make-a-play thing, then I think a defense can jump on his head and make him go down.
It’s fucking tackle football and the guy getting tackled is going to resist being tackled. So you make it so he can’t resist.
Otherwise just make the QB wear a flag and the play is dead when it gets pulled.

How soon do we see no overslot bonuses in the draft?
Is this why some teams are already diverting their money into the int’l market?
Seems like it will turn into a situation where teams should just go for signability (high floor, low ceiling college guys) in the draft and go after potential and tools/youth in the international market.

Probably not for a while on slotting. Things are going pretty well for baseball right now and there haven’t been any rumbles that there are going to be any sticking points in the next CBA. I’m not sure if the MLBPA would strike over slotting. Some sports biz guys like Maury Brown say the feeling in the MLBPA is that slotting is just on step on the slippery slope towards a salary cap, which they definitely do not want.

I think it’s kind of bullshit that teams have to wait until August 15th to get these deals done when they’re still going way over slot. It would be nice if these guys could get a few weeks of action before the season ends, but thanks to Bud, nope. Can’t happen.

All I care about with the first two-three rounds is that the team signs its players (Colvin/Simpson like situations excluded). The important signs imho were guys like Dunson and Maples. How many teams went as overslot as the cubs did out of the top few rounds?

I’ll look through it later, but it happens. The Cubs did well and nobody has matched the bonus the Cubs gave to a guy outside the top 2 rounds (Maples 2.5 million).
When I looked through the top 15 rounds yesterday and the signing bonuses, I did see a lot of $700K signing bonuses from other teams in the later rounds. The Cubs went a bit higher with Dunston and quite a bit higher with Maples.
The Royals went crazy in this draft.

AFter the O’s 6th rounder, the next largest is the Pirates 9th rounder for $1.2 million and then Dunston and Maples were the only others over $1 million through 15 rounds.

I see the Cubs are still losing.

Looking only through 15 rounds what we have is the Cubs spent a little more than average overall, but went way over slot on just two players (Dunston and Maples). The Cubs were regularly over slot though, but those two stand out.

It also sounds like the players they didn’t end up signing weren’t that big of a deal. It sounds like they got just about everyone they wanted.

I’m sure there’s one several teams wish they could have signed, but most teams got the guys they wanted.

In that case, I’m glad the Cubs sort of kept up with the Joneses 😉

The difference with the Cubs is that they took two guys in the later rounds who wanted big bucks and got them signed. Most teams just pick those guys, send them an offer and see if they’re at all interested and move on.

If I counted right, Carlos Pena needs 28 more walks to become the first Cub since I don’t remember when to get 100 walks in a season.

Sosa had 100 walks at some point during the late 90s or early 2000s, didn’t he?

Since 1947, the Cubs have had only 4 seasons in which a batter has walked 100 times. Sosa has 2 of them. Richie Ashburn in 1960 and Gary Matthews in 1984 are the other 2. http://www.baseball-reference.com/play-index/share.cgi?id=Vv800

Methinks Barry Bonds has more walks than all those Cubs combined.
