Dreamcast 74: Fumes

In by Rice Cube101 Comments

Kind of sucky that we have actual jobs and lives and responsibilities that make it so our recording sessions often coincide with Cubs games, and also sucky that sometimes, the Cubs don’t win those games. But methinks most of what we said during this latest poop of a loss is still applicable as the Cubs remain in contention in the final week of the season, which is an objective fact even if their path is a bit more difficult due to various self-inflicted wounds. Herein:

  • Stroman’s return and pitcher usage with injuries and fatigue racking up
  • Using the best possible matchups
  • Play the rookies, maybe?
  • Award nominees like we actually had a vote

Two games the Cubs could and should have won were their bullpen not running on fumes and held together by band-aids and bubblegum.

I suppose if the Cubs end up out of the playoffs, a topic we could discuss is the future of certain staffers…though I don’t think Jed is the type to be reactionary given it was sort of his fault the roster was built and used the way it was at times.

Given the Cubs’ injury woes, particularly at closer but definitely beyond that, I don’t think there’s much to the narrative that the team wasn’t constructed well or that the team on the field hasn’t performed how they should’ve. They went without their number one starter for the second half, essentially and were still in good position and likely will be until the end. Especially against the Braves, this is hardly shocking. It just sucks.

Edwin Jackson WAG ftl. I probably would have missed CIN-ATL if the yguy I picked hadn’t just pitched in this series (dying laughing).

White Sox just beat AZ, and since the Dbacks are facing the Astros next and the Astros need to win to either force a tie at the top with Texas or to hold off Seattle, this might still be a favorable weekend for the Cubs if they can just piece together a win

This has been probably the most fun season since 2016, and it’s a shame the Cubs will likely come up short. They fought hard, and I’m not convinced they’re a worse team than the Brewers.

Only 2:43 of torture tonight as we await the conclusion of the Mets game should they decide to atone for the sin of using Anthony Kay and expecting a positive result

I’m remembering all the way back to 2004 when a hurricane postponed a couple games and forced the Cubs to fly to Miami for a doubleheader and lose their only off day for about three weeks in September.

I would not be disappointed if this takes the wind out of the Marlins’ sails.

So the chances are slim, but the Cubs pretty much need to win one more game than the Marlins, and that may be tough unless the Pirates are still motivated by David Ross insulting them or whatever. Or maybe they’re petty and fold, it could go either way. But if Cubs sweep and Marlins are swept, at least they don’t have to play their makeup game (dying laughing)

Still amazed at the lasting impact of CC Sabathia’s 2 months with the Brewers over a decade ago on the stats (dying laughing).

    Rice Cube,

    (dying laughing)

For real though, any turmoil has already passed during the Weekend At Bernie’s shit that’s been going on for the past year or so. They’ll appoint a reliable placeholder, and the only surprise will be if there isn’t two Dems in the last round of voting.

In silly stuff I saw today while driving, looked over and saw a woman full on eating spaghetti with a fork and the twirling and everything…how did she steer? Can you steer with one knee while controlling the gas with the other? That takes more body coordination than I believe I have

    BVS,

Wasn’t there friction between him and the front office at some point? Maybe I’m just conflating Gabe Kapler and Phil Nevin since they played at roughly the same time (dying laughing).

    Perkins,

Everyone just ran out of gas and magic at the same time, but the games have been close, it wasn’t for lack of trying

Yeah I agree with that. It’s impressive they’ve battled as much as they have, but the team feels like a marathon runner who started his kick around mile 18 and was completely exhausted by 24. I’m not mad or even super disappointed. It’s just unfortunate.
